La Mondialisation Et Les Croyants: Des Effets De La Mondialisation Sur Les Communautés Chrétiennes = Globalization And Believers: Globalization’S Effects On Christian Communities, Carrie Lee Tallichet

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research aimed to explore the different manifestations of globalization’s impact on Catholic and Protestant student movements in Toulouse, France. To accomplish this investigation, the researcher sought the opinions of students who participate regularly in religious groups regarding the cultural diversity of their group and their concept of a global Christian community. Based on information gathered in interviews, the researcher concluded, though not definitively, that Catholic and Protestant student groups both experience the effects of globalization, but each in a manner in relation with their faith’s organizational structure: Catholic students felt close ties with other Catholic groups worldwide despite the …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The role of day care centre, baby sitters and the image of the modern mother in the ability for a mother to conciliate her professional and family life was studied in Toulouse, France. Seven semi-directed interviews on the subjects of the capacity to find a place at a center, one’s access to financial aid, male-female equality in a couple, and the manners in which one balances her family and professional life composed the substance of this study. The interviews revealed the influence of the ability of a mother to find a solution for the care of her child on her …

Where Is 'Community' In Community Based Forestry?, Courtney G. Flint, A. E. Luloff, James C. Finley Jun 2008

Where Is 'Community' In Community Based Forestry?, Courtney G. Flint, A. E. Luloff, James C. Finley

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Community-based forestry and community-based natural resource management have become increasingly common terms in both the scientific and popular press. However, as with so many other concepts currently in vogue, rarely do studies invoking them incorporate either a grounded theoretical understanding or practical inclusion of the central term: community. Community emerges through communication and interaction among people who care about each other and the place they live. In its purest form, community is marked by its multiple and often conflicting perspectives. This article draws upon recent research experience with the Ford Foundation's community-based forestry initiative to illustrate the importance of solidly …

Communities As Necessity In Information Literacy Development: Challenging The Standards, Benjamin R. Harris

Library Faculty Research

Contemporary standards suggest that information literate activity is a solitary process. As a corrective, research and pedagogical theory related to “learning communities” and “communities of practice” have become valuable sites of inquiry for librarians. A Common Word?’ Reflections On Christian-Muslim Dialogue, Larry Poston Apr 2008

A Common Word?’ Reflections On Christian-Muslim Dialogue, Larry Poston

Bible & Religion Educator Scholarship

On September 13, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI addressed an audience at the University of Regensburgon the topic of “Faith, Reason, and the University.” While his message focused on the necessity of maintaining a religious faith based upon and commensurate with Reason, a quotation early in the speech from the Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Paleologus (1350-1425) produced a highly negative reaction from Muslims around the world. In a discussion with a Persian scholar on the subject of Christianity’s relationship to Islam, the emperor had challenged his Muslim colleague to “show … just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you …

El Legado De Al-Andalus En La Gastronomía Granadina Y La Influencia Actual (The Legacy Of Al-Andalus In The Gastronomy Of Granada), Elizabeth Leibinger

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Caldereria, the street is officially named, but it is known as the Calle de las Teterias. One crowded, narrow market street, leading tourists and locals alike up into the Albaicin, overflows with Arabic themed shops and products. But most noticeable, and most attractive to me, are the Arabic arches of the lavishly decorated teterias, tea houses, scattered among these little shops. Inside is the aspect of Granadian culture most basic to life here and a living remnant of the Moorish occupation – food! I came to Granada with the clear knowledge that I would find many windows into its …

L’Augmentation Des Associations Dans « L’État Providence », Sara Haj-Hassan Apr 2008

L’Augmentation Des Associations Dans « L’État Providence », Sara Haj-Hassan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project sought to study the increase in associations in relation to the disengagement of the state from the social sector. The researcher used both interviews and observational methods to analyze the reasons for this increase, and the importance the associations hold in the functioning of the state. Through direct participation and personal conversations with both association employees and service-users, the researcher was able to comprehend the multiple dimensions of the topic. The researcher then goes on to relate the existence of the associations to the fundamental French values.

The users who create and edit topical Wikipedia articles (e.g., "Miss Piggy") or subject-focused Wikia articles (e.g., all things Muppets related) form stronger community bonds than those who are just readers. While major search engines offer video search, Kassel cited some new to me, including TeacherTube ("geared toward teachers and students for community sharing for instructional videos") and Vidipedia ("structured like Wikipedia but with video content"). David Ball, university librarian, Bournemouth University, UK, said academic libraries face obstacles when virtual learning environments (VLEs) become "the primary means of interaction between students and universities."

The Death Penalty And The Society We Want, Stephen B. Bright Mar 2008

The Death Penalty And The Society We Want, Stephen B. Bright

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “At the local level, we can tell a lot about a community by how it treats a homeless person suffering from schizophrenia who is begging on the street. One possibility is to look upon that person with the thought that there but for grace go I, that this person is desperately in need of help, and that we—individually and as a community—must respond by giving a helping hand and making sure that the person receives food, shelter, clothing, and care for such a debilitating mental illness. Another possibility is to simply ignore the person, to step around him or …

Community-University Partnerships: Achieving Continuity In The Face Of Change, Linda Silka, Robert Forrant, Brenda Bond, Patricia Coffey, Robin Toof, Dan Toomey, David Turcotte, Cheryl West

Partnerships/Community

A challenge most community-university partnerships will face after having established themselves is how to maintain continuity in the face of change. The problems besetting communities continually shift as new issues bubble up. Similarly, the goals of the university partners often fluctuate. And the partners themselves shift: people working in non-government organizations often move in and out of positions and university partners may change with tenure or shifts in university priorities. In light of all of this flux, can stable community-university partnerships be built and, if so, how?

University-Community Engagement: What Does It Mean?, Jenny Onyx Jan 2008

University-Community Engagement: What Does It Mean?, Jenny Onyx

Partnerships/Community

I want to reflect on the nature of Community-University engagement, its role, challenges and achievements. In this I start with 'engagement' and what that might mean in the context of a university-based research centre. There are, of course, many forms of engagement, but I wish to focus specifically on engagement as coproduction of knowledge. In this, our partner in the co-production of knowledge is the community, or rather civil society. I re-examine the nature of community, and the role of civil society in today's society. The article then outlines one significant research programme that emerged from the work of a …

Evaluating Community Archaeology In The Uk, Faye Simpson, Howard M. R. Williams Jan 2008

Evaluating Community Archaeology In The Uk, Faye Simpson, Howard M. R. Williams

Howard M. R. Williams

Does community archaeology work? In the UK over the last decade, there has been a boom in projects utilising the popular phrase ‘community archaeology’. These projects can take many different forms and have ranged from the public face of research and developer-funded programmes to projects run by museums, archaeological units, universities, and archaeological societies. Community archaeology also encapsulates those projects run by communities themselves or in dialogue between ‘professional’ and ‘amateur’ groups and individuals. Many of these projects are driven by a desire for archaeology to meet a range of perceived educational and social values in bringing about knowledge and …
