Scientific planning for conserving water and while minimizing the financial resources requirement for its implementation could be done through application of advanced technological programs developed by the author. Three state-of-art geo-spatial programs - Multi-Algorithm Automation Program (MAAP), Water Analysis Program (WAP) and Check Dam Optimization Program (CDOP) - would be used. MAAP produces land use land cover (lulc) map primarily by undertaking Digital Image Processing (DIP) of satellite data in an automated fashion using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The purpose of the present study was to characterize, geographically and temporally, the patterns of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) death disparity in 67 Florida jurisdictions, and to determine if the detected trends varied according to age, race, and sex. The space-time scan statistic proposed by Kulldorff et al was used to examine the excess AIDS deaths that occurred between 1987 and 2004. Results were geographically referenced in maps using EpiInfo and EpiMap made available by the Centers for Disease Control. Miami-Dade and the nearby counties including Broward, Martin, and Palm Beach are the most likely clusters (observed/expected: 1505.16) with …

Excessive levels of automobile driving are generally acknowledged to have several negative externalities that contribute to the lack of sustainability in current transport systems. Achieving a reduction in VMT inevitably requires the introduction of disincentives for driving. This has generally been lacking in the US, which has relatively low parking costs and taxes on fuel compared to its developed-world counterparts. However, starting immediately after the Hurricane Katrina disaster, fuel costs in the United States have increased dramatically relative to previous long-term price behavior. Park and ride scheme acts as an important component of the parking management strategies of a city. Exploring the significant attributes that influence the utilization of such scheme can provide a better understanding of its application among the urban users. The three main areas of concern towards understanding the characteristics of the park and ride users are the socioeconomic, trip and the parking-related characteristics. Educators in many disciplines are embracing the wonders of Google Earth to engage their students. This session explains the context of change in education (Web 2.0 and the NetGen students) and how these two trends merge in a new area called Neogeography. The session presents preliminary findings of a research project to identify the early adoption of one Neogeography (Google Earth). Results show a developing use of Google Earth in course assignments at the college and university level, with several resources identified that will become available in summer 2008.

The role of urban agriculture in the food supply of cities and towns, as a complement to rural agriculture is becoming an important issue in a globalizing world economy. The developing countries see it as a way to alleviate urban poverty. Remote sensing and GIS techniques were used to assess areal extent of urban agricultural land in Lokoja. Questionnaires were also used to evaluate the contributions to urban agriculture to food security and income generation among the urban poor in Lokoja. Artifacts of cold-hammered native gold have been discovered in a secure and undisturbed Terminal Archaic burial context at Jiskairumoko, a multicomponent Late Archaic–Early Formative period site in the southwestern Lake Titicaca basin, Peru. The burial dates to 3776 to 3690 carbon-14 years before the present (2155 to 1936 calendar years B.C.), making this the earliest worked gold recovered to date not only from the Andes, but from the Americas as well. This discovery lends support to the hypothesis that the earliest metalworking in the Andes was experimentation with native gold. The presence of gold in a society of low-level food …

The 2001 Kutch earthquake, in Gujarat state in western India, destroyed 230,000 houses and damaged another 1 million. In Bhuj and Bachhau, urban centers close to the epicenter of the earthquake, single-family houses, squatter settlements, and high-rise apartments were destroyed, and public and private housing reconstruction programs were introduced to help communities rebuild their houses. However, five years after the disaster, in spite of interventions by local and global, public and private entities, many communities in both towns continued to struggle towards housing recovery. Wildfire is a growing threat to suburban and exurban communities, in part because fires have grown more severe and frequent as a result of land use and climatic influences and in part because more people are living in fire prone areas. The so-called Healthy Forest Restoration Act (HFRA), the federal government’s response to this crisis, is a deeply flawed statute that will likely exacerbate wildfire risks at the same time it makes real ecological restoration even harder. This essay is a reflection on democracy, justice and intervention. It focuses on the Bosnian experience, where since the Dayton Accords the indispensable context for reform has been the international protectorate. This essay examines the assumptions used by the international community to govern Bosnia, which suggest a policy premised upon resistance to the fragmentation of the state under any circumstances, and a belief that the international intervention is simultaneously morally justified and a purely technical process for increasing efficiency. This paper argues there are two broad ways policymakers might use industry cluster concepts to inform the design of regional innovation policy. The first, and clearly dominant approach, is to view identified technology-based clusters as targets for growth strategies, i.e., to nurture the growth of selected groups of innovative industries and research strengths in a limited set of regions as a means of increasing levels of innovation economy-wide (termed the cluster building approach). This study used remote sensing techniques to estimate surface radiant temperature of Lokoja town from LandSat ETM satellite imagery of 2001. The research was conducted in the phases of Pre-fieldwork, fieldwork and post fieldwork. Data generated from the field and satellite imagery were integrated, analysed, interpreted in a GIS environment. The result indicated that built-up area (336.14 K) and vacant land (321.63 K) exhibit the highest surface radiant temperature, while vegetated surfaces (301.23 K), water bodies (303.06 K) and cultivated land (307.56K) recorded the lowest radiant temperature respectively. Typhoid fever is a common ailment affecting many resident especially the inhabitants of Anyigba. The problem is spatially related to the lack of portable water. The Human Health Risk Analysis methods of SADA (Spatial Analysis and Decision Assistance) software was used to evaluate the health impact of water source. Land Surface Temperature (LST) of Lokoja town were retrieved from LandSat TM imagery of 1987. The NDVI and land emissivity were estimated from visible and near infrared bands, while the effective satellite temperature was estimated from the thermal infrared band. The Qin et al's mono-window algorithm was employed to obtain the land surface temperatures of the different land use/cover types in Lokoja town. The result indicated that vacant land and built-up have the highest LST values of 331.13K and 329.82K, and vegetation, water bodies and cultivated land having the least with 294.03K, 296.76K and 306.06K respectively. Anthropogenic drivers such as the urbanization and economic dependence have being a major force shaping various landscapes. Kaduna town is no exception of such landscapes. This study uses remote sensing and GIS techniques with survey to identify the various land uses, their various transformations over the a period of 11 years (1990-2000)and to measure the rate of urban expansion and loss of vegetation cover in the study area. Ground truthing and socio-economic survey were employed to ascertain the number of banks available in each senatorial district of the state and to ascertain the socio-economic profile of the users of these banks respectively.
