Information literacy is the ability of individuals "to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information" (American Library Association, 1989, para. 3). At San Jose State University (SJSU), information literacy has been traditionally taught through one-shot, 50-minute lectures delivered by university librarians to students enrolled in a select few undergraduate courses. This method of instruction has proven to be neither sustainable nor effective. The lectures are not tailored by discipline and students might receive the same lecture several times while completing their lower-division coursework. SJSU wants to replace this format …

Who Moved My Desk? The Future Reference Platforms, Anamika Dasgupta, Steven Ovadia

New communication platforms such as Wikis, Bots, MySpace, Webex, Podcasts, Text-to-speech programs and community-based reference sites offer a means to share information in different formats, supporting specific learning styles, and instruction environments. The effectiveness of these communication platforms in providing reference services depends on many factors: the nature of information being shared, the attitudes of the information seeker and sharer, and the environment and context in which the information is being shared. This presentation will include an introduction and overview of these communication platforms.

The Library Outpost, a satellite office of the campus’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, seeks ways to reach out to First Year students who are new to writing research papers. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose, California is a unique dual-use library serving the students of San Jose State University and the community of San Jose, California. The reference collections of the two libraries are merged and interfiled to promote ease of access for both populations served. Economies of scale were realized through collaborative collection development activities for major reference purchases between the two institutions. This article describes the planning and creation of the King Library's merged reference collection and reviews the literature of collaborative collection development and merged or interfiled collections.
