Four thousand years ago, Archaic period peoples hunted swordfish in the Gulf of Maine. In addition to fauna remains, archaeologists have recovered stone representations of the distinctive sword-shaped bill, suggesting that these animals had a cultural significance that went beyond their dietary value. What archaeologists don't know is precisely where and how the fish were taken. In our own time, swordfish rarely come inshore. Commercial operators, both harpooners and long-liners, fish the eastern side of Brown's and George's Banks and points farther along the continental shelf. In 2002 there were over 5,500 fatalities reported by industries in the United States. A total of 4.7 million injuries and illnesses were reported in private sector workplaces in 2002, resulting in a rate of 5.3 cases per 100 equivalent fulltime workers. The Liberty Mutual 2002 Workplace Safety Index estimates that direct costs for occupational injuries in 1999 rose to $40.1 billion, with indirect costs reaching over $200 billion. Shipyard work is very hazardous, with an injury-illness incidence rate of 16.6 that is more than twice that of construction and general industry.4 While boatyard work is more diverse, and usually …

The University of Maine Center on Aging, in partnership with the Maine Center for Osteoporosis Research and Education, was one of three grantees taking part in a U.S. Administration on Aging-funded project to develop a national osteoporosis awareness and action plan targeting postmenopausal women


The University of Maine Center on Aging’s portion of the research entailed several phases of activity. Initially, focus groups were conducted with 147 ethnically and racially diverse older women around the country (Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, California, and Kansas) to determine where older women obtain their health information, what they consider reliable and unreliable informational sources, …

There are many resources available to assist informal caregivers, and not all are based on income requirements. Local resources that exist are your Local Area Agency on Aging, the Maine Alzheimer’s Association Helpline, and the Bureau of Elder and Adult Services. Federal resources include Elder Care Locator and AARP. Before calling a resource specialist, make sure to have basic information about your loved one, as they may ask about their demographic, health, legal, and financial information. Call ahead to familiarize yourself with options in order to be prepared before a crisis occurs.

The Northeast Archives is proud to announce that we have completed reprocessing and preservation work on two major collections, the Aroostook County Collection and the Maine State Federated Labor Council Collection. Our graduate assistants made preservation master and CD copies of each tape and expanded the descriptions of the tape contents to better assist researchers in finding the information they need. This work has been supported by grants from the Maine Historical Records Advisory Board.

This award provides partial funding for expansion and modernization of the library at The Darling Marine Center. The library currently contains more marine-related holdings than any other library in Maine, and is an important resource for researchers and students interested in the biology of the Gulf of Maine and the Maine coast. Because of current space limitations, a third of the library's holdings are stored in other buildings and attic spaces. The library is not wheelchair accessible, has no significant study space, and provides only limited access to electronic databases. The proposed changes include: 1) construction of a 1,500 sq. …

Elder abuse is often perpetrated by a family member. As a family caregiver, it is important to recognize if you are experiencing low self-esteem, feeling burnt out, isolated or hopeless, or if you have a history of domestic violence. Stress is a normal part of caregiving, and it is important to find efficient ways to cope with it, such as taking care of yourself. Identifying and preventing possible abusive behavior is important, and you can receive assistance through family members, friends, and respite services.

Contributions within Discipline: The findings have improved the efficiency of adaptive measurement in psychophysics, in experimental paradigms where individual trials are often information-poor and experiments are consequently long. The Bayesian adaptive methodology improves the information throughput in such experiments and improves on heuristic methods. The multivariate estimation also extends the utility of Bayesian adaptive estimation into realms where it is even more important because of the 'curse of dimensionality' (where the size of parameter space is exponential in the number of parameters). In addition, the work on nonparametric adaptive methods has helped reveal the source of bias in simpler adaptive …
