Bowl Games, Peyton Manning, Reggie White, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2004

Bowl Games, Peyton Manning, Reggie White, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It seems to me that the parade of bowl games has become endless. It's as if there has been some creeping growth over the past several years forming bowl games in the same way kudzu expands on its own in warm humid climates. What once was the Twelve Nights of Bowl Games has turned into the National Football Coaches Bowl Game Telethon sponsored by the National Association of Insomniacs.

Lack Of Diversity In College Sports Leadership, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2004

Lack Of Diversity In College Sports Leadership, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was a month ago that my colleagues at the University of Central Florida in the Institute for the Study of Diversity and Ethics in Sport issued a fascinating report on the lack of diversity in leadership positions in Higher Education. One of the conclusions of the study is that this lack of diversity may contribute to the same lack of diversity in Division I Football Head Coaching positions. The conclusion seems more than likely, indeed even self-evident.

Ty Willingham, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Welcome back to the bizarre world of intercollegiate athletics. The news this week comes out of Notre Dame and several other institutions of higher learning where football coaches are fired with reckless abandon. A few weeks ago we saw the spectacle of the public humiliation of Ron Zook at the University of Florida. This week the big news is the public humiliation of Ty Willingham by the acolytes of purity at the University of Notre Dame.

Implementing A Social Norms Approach To Reduce Alcohol Abuse On Campus: Lessons Learned In The Shadow Of "The World's Largest Six-Pack", Douglas J. Swanson, Kristine M. Zegers, Aaron A. Zwaska Dec 2004

Implementing A Social Norms Approach To Reduce Alcohol Abuse On Campus: Lessons Learned In The Shadow Of "The World's Largest Six-Pack", Douglas J. Swanson, Kristine M. Zegers, Aaron A. Zwaska

Journalism

Many institutions of higher education are struggling with the problem of excessive alcohol consumption by students. Colleges and universities want to be ‘good neighbors’ in their communities and must limit legal and social risks that result from excessive alcohol consumption by students. At the same time, colleges and universities operate in an increasingly challenging marketplace where many prospective students seek out institutions with a ‘party school’ reputation. Thus, higher education institutions are finding it difficult to define and carry out alcohol reduction measures that satisfy all constituents. This article discusses the approach taken at the University of Wisconsin—La Crosse. UW-L …

Sapere Aude: Critical Ontology And The Case Of Child Development, James Wong Dec 2004

Sapere Aude: Critical Ontology And The Case Of Child Development, James Wong

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This paper argues that Foucault’s proposed positive program of practical critique in his later work, which he calls ‘critical ontology,’ provides a response to his critics. The goal of critical ontology is to “separate out, from the contingency that has made us what we are, the possibility of no longer being, doing or thinking what we are, do, or think.” However, it may be objected that, since Foucault emphasizes going beyond contingencies, it appears that he is guilty of committing a kind of genetic fallacy. I will defend Foucault against such a charge by using concepts and practices in child …

Mass Media Reform In China: Toward A New Analytical Framework, Roya Akhavan-Majid Dec 2004

Mass Media Reform In China: Toward A New Analytical Framework, Roya Akhavan-Majid

Mass Communication Faculty Publications

Historically, analyses of change in mass media systems have tended to draw upon a ‘dissident vs state’ framework, derived largely from the western historical experience. In the case of China, a ‘state vs market’ scenario has been superimposed on this basic framework, in the context of which the Chinese Communist party-state is often portrayed as a monolithic entity intent on promoting market-oriented reform in China’s economic base, while keeping a tight grip on the country’s mass media system and political superstructure. These dominant analytical frameworks tend to mask a number of important dynamics unique to Chinese history and society, that …

Policies Governing Use Of Computing Technology In Academic Libraries, Jason Vaughan Dec 2004

Policies Governing Use Of Computing Technology In Academic Libraries, Jason Vaughan

Library Faculty Publications

The networked computing environment is a vital resource for academic libraries. Ever-increasing use dictates the prudence of having a comprehensive computer-use policy in force. Universities often have an overarching policy or policies governing the general use of computing technology that helps to safeguard the university equipment, software, and network against inappropriate use. Libraries often benefit from having an adjunct policy that works to emphasize the existence and important points of higher-level policies, while also providing a local context for systems and policies pertinent to the library in particular. Having computer-use policies at the university and library level helps provide a …

Career Conundrums Require Self- Examination, Carla Kimbrough Dec 2004

Career Conundrums Require Self- Examination, Carla Kimbrough

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

It's Monday morning: How do you feel about going to work today?
Are you excited about the challenges ahead, or are you dreading the next assignment?
Now, imagine you have to remain there for the rest of your career.
Those Monday-morning feelings or the rest-of-your-life musings may give you a hint about whether it's time to make a career move — or not.
Fortunately, we can use logic and feelings to decide whether to stay or go.
We also can be confident that we're not alone. Career moves are something we all consider.

Enabling The Asian American Electorate: 2003 Voter Registration In Eleven Massachusetts Cities And Towns, Paul Watanabe, Michael Liu Dec 2004

Enabling The Asian American Electorate: 2003 Voter Registration In Eleven Massachusetts Cities And Towns, Paul Watanabe, Michael Liu

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

For many in Massachusetts’ rapidly growing Asian American community, political participation is a vehicle to expand opportunities. Involvement in the selection of public officials and casting votes on critical issues are important manifestations of civic engagement. This participation, while it may offer opportunities for Asian Americans, also poses some significant challenges. In order to vote, adult residents must be United States citizens by birth or naturalization, but that is not enough. Citizens must also be registered to vote. This report provides the most detailed information on voter registration and Asian Americans in Massachusetts ever assembled. It includes analysis by the …

The Nfl And Its Money, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Now that the NFL has refocused following Towelgate in the midst of what is developing as a most interesting season on the field, it might be worth going back to two stories that flew just beneath the radar over the past few weeks. These, of course, involved money, because we are talking about the NFL Money Machine, which continues to validate Al Davis' wisdom from 1978 when he noted in the wake of a lucrative television contract that "any dummy can make money operating a pro football club."

Nicollette Sheridan Bares All, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Attention Hypocrites! Your future is in the executive suites of television networks and the officialdom of the National Football League. The only requirement is that you have the ability to make self-righteous pronouncements about public morality and taste while maintaining your composure and never once betraying yourself with so much as a hint of a smile. Even, the now fashionable smirk, will not be tolerated. If you get really good at this and have a relative in the cabinet you might even be appointed to head the FCC.

Maurice Clarett And The Osu Scandals, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It has been an amazing fall season, not only for the Red Sox saga but also considering the eerie quiet on the college football scene. The usual run of assaults, petty thefts, sexual misconduct cases, drug charges, and weapons possession cases have been as rare as football victories for the University of Central Florida.
