Relational And Physical Victimization Within Friendships: Nobody Told Me There'd Be Friends Like These, Nicki R. Crick, David A. Nelson

In past research, relational and physical forms of peer victimization have been identified that have been shown to be significantly associated with social–psychological maladjustment. These forms of victimization, although studied primarily within the group peer context, also occur within dyadic relationships such as friendships. Gender differences in friend victimization and the association between friend victimization and children's social–psychological adjustment were examined. Results showed that boys were more physically victimized by their friends than were girls. Girls were more relationally than physically victimized by their friends. Relationships Between Accountability, Job Satisfaction, And Trust, Peg Thoms, Jennifer J. Dose, Kimberly S. Scott

With the trend toward self-management comes increasing accountability of individuals to their coworkers and organizations. There is an implicit assumption that workers like self-management and the accompanying accountability, despite little supporting empirical evidence. This study examines the idea that workers’ perceptions of their level of accountability are related to their job satisfaction. A significant correlation was found between job satisfaction and perceived accountability to coworkers and perceived accountability to management. In addition, we found that accountability to both coworkers and management was positively related to trust in supervisors and managers. Couples making the transition to parenthood experience challenges that can threaten the quality and stability of their relationships and the health of family members. Currently, the educational infrastructure to support the delivery of couple-relationship education during the transition to parenthood is limited. A longitudinal study explored high-school completion among African Americans. Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) are a new policy instrument designed to help the poor save and accumulate assets. IDAs provide matches for savings used for home purchase, post-secondary education, or microenterprise. IDAs cannot help participants, however, if they drop out. What determines drop-out, and what can be done to help participants to stay in? Three findings emerge from an analysis of IDAs in the American Dream Demonstration. First, drop-out depends more on transaction costs and previous debt than on income. Second, program design --and match rates in particular--affect drop-out risk. Effects Of Mothers' Assets On Expectations And Children's Educational Achievement In Female-Headed Households, Min Zhan, Michael Sherraden

This study examines the effects of mothers’ assets (home ownership and savings) on their expectations and children’s educational achievement in female-headed households. Through the analysis of data from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH), results indicate that single mothers’ assets have positive effects on children’s educational achievement, and this effect is partially mediated through expectations. The study also finds that the positive effects of household income on children’s outcomes occur mainly through mothers’ assets. These results lend support for expansion of asset-based policies for poor women with children.

This paper examines the relationship between income and saving performance in Individual Development Accounts (IDAs). We first discuss theories of saving. Next, for IDA participants in the American Dream Demonstration, we look at income sources and distribution, followed by tabulations of income and savings outcomes. Following this, we discuss results from regression analyses on savings outcomes. We find that savings amount did not increase with income and that the savings rate decreased with income. Although the data do not reveal exactly what caused this, we believe that institutional factors in IDA programs played an important role.

The population of kinship care families in the Commonwealth is diverse in its characteristics, resources, and needs. The often-referenced stereotype of the elderly single grandmother caring for a number of grandchildren holds for only a portion of the kinship care families. Many children are cared for by married couples; many of the grandparents are not elderly; and many of the caregivers are not grandparents, but rather aunts, uncles, grown siblings, or other relatives. Although the duration of the caregiving relationship is unknown for non-grandparental care, most of the grandparent caregivers are involved in long-term caregiving. As such, their needs are …

There is increasing divergence in the academic outcomes of African American males and females. By most accounts, males are falling behind their female peers educationally as African American females are graduating from high schools at higher rates and are going on to college and graduate school in greater numbers. Some have suggested that school completion and performance is associated with how students feel about themselves. The purpose of this study was to explore gender differences in the relationship between self-perceptions and two academic outcomes among a sample of 243 African American high school sophomores. Both theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence show that asset-based, means-tested welfare programs have negative effects on savings behaviors of welfare recipients. In this study, we examine how welfare recipiency is associated with savings outcomes in Individual Development Accounts. The results suggest that when other factors are controlled, receipt of welfare either before or at enrollment of IDAs is not correlated with savings outcomes. Policy implications under current welfare reform are discussed.

The primary focus of this study is on illegal weapons trade in Romania and the Caucasus region of the former USSR. Illegal weapons traffic in these regions is linked with both organized crime and terrorist activities. The main source of weapons for conflicts in the Caucasus region is corruption in Russian military circles.

The two central purposes of this volume are to review the historical, conceptual, and empirical literatures on parental psychological control and to advance the rapidly growing scientific literature Ono this aspect of the parent-child relationship. Chapter 2 addressed the first task with a review of published material that has specifically investigated psychological control or variables that are conceptually similar to it. From this review of the historical conceptualizations of parental psychological control, we concluded that psychological control is a psychologically oriented, intrusive, constraining, and manipulating form of parental control in which parents appear to maintain their own psychological status at …

Children who experience difficulties with peers also tend to experience both concurrent social–psychological difficulties and long-term negative developmental outcomes. Specifically, a significant amount of research has identified peer rejection and isolation as significant precursors to academic troubles and socially deviant behavior (DeRosier, Kupersmidt, & Patterson, 1994; Kupersmidt, Coie, & Dodge, 1990; Parker & Asher, 1987; Parker, Rubin, Price, & DeRosier, 1995). Substantial research and intervention efforts have consequently been dedicated to an understanding of the problem behaviors commonly identified as correlates or antecedents of peer rejection. A growing body of Western literature has demonstrated the importance of three domains of socialization—connection with significant others, regulation of behavior, and the facilitation of psychological autonomy—in predicting outcomes in adolescents and children (Barber, 1997a, 1997b; Gray & Steinberg, 1999; Hart, Newell, & Olsen, in press; Nelson, 1997; Steinberg, Dornbusch, & Brown, 1992). Psychological control—parenting that does not allow children psychological autonomy, as has been defined elsewhere in this volume, has received increased attention in the past decade (for a discussion of definitions and research, see chapter 2, this volume).
