Deterrence, Brutalization, And The Death Penalty: Another Examination Of Oklahoma's Return To Capital Punishment, William C. Bailey Nov 1998

Deterrence, Brutalization, And The Death Penalty: Another Examination Of Oklahoma's Return To Capital Punishment, William C. Bailey

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

A replication and extension of a weekly ARIMA analysis (1989–1991) by Cochran et al. (1994), which appeared in Criminology, confirms that Oklahoma's return to capital punishment in 1990, after a 25-year moratorium, was followed by a significant increase in killings involving strangers. Moreover, a multivariate autoregressive analysis, which includes measures of the frequency of executions, the level of print media attention devoted to executions, and selected sociodemographic variables, produced results consistent with the brutalization hypothesis for total homicides, as well as a variety of different types of killing involving both strangers and nonstrangers. No prior study has shown such strong …

An Empirical Test Of A Communibiological Model Of Trait Verbal Aggressiveness, Kristin M. Valencic, Michael J. Beatty, Jill E. Rudd, Jean A. Dobos, Alan D. Heisel Jun 1998

An Empirical Test Of A Communibiological Model Of Trait Verbal Aggressiveness, Kristin M. Valencic, Michael J. Beatty, Jill E. Rudd, Jean A. Dobos, Alan D. Heisel

Communication Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to test Beatty and McCroskey's communibiological model of trait verbal aggressiveness. In general, this model views trait verbal aggressiveness as an expression of temperament; specifically, that trait verbal aggressiveness represents low thresholds for the fight or flight (FFS) neurobiological system. This model further contends that behavioral inhibition circuitry (BIS) moderates FFS activation by tempering aggressive impulses, otherwise FFS activation would manifest itself in the form of physical rather than verbal attacks. Beatty and McCroskey (1997) propose that low thresholds for stimulating the behavioral activation system (BAS) should be related to trait verbal aggressiveness to …

In July, 1998, the Great Lakes Environmental Finance Center (GLEFC) conducted a consulting workshop in Peoria, Illinois. Particular emphasis was placed on strategies pertinent to properties with a history of environmental contamination, often characterized as brownfields. In the case of Darst Street, where the level of environmental concern was not fully known, remediation funding strategies were not addressed. Redevelopment of the site and the prospect for a variety of users was the …
