Sri Lanka's "Army Of Housemaids": Control Of Remittances And Gender Transformations, Michele Ruth Gamburd Dec 1995

Sri Lanka's "Army Of Housemaids": Control Of Remittances And Gender Transformations, Michele Ruth Gamburd

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

When the mass labor migration of women to the Middle East began in the early 1980's, many Sri Lankan social scientists predicted a revolution in gender equality and a greater participation by women in political and economic decision-making as a result of employment abroad. Noting that gender rarely correlates in predictable ways with social change, and questioning the dominant teleological ideology that change always happens for the better, this paper looks at relations between female migrants in a coastal village in the Southwest and the people responsible for spending and saving the money they remit to the village. Several case …

This workbook is meant to provide basic information and options for developing a strategy within your own community. Since economic, environmental, social, and political aspects differ from town to town, there is no magic wand for developing a sustainable community effort. There are, however, common processes which have been used by communities across the country that can provide a foundation for local efforts.

Cornerstones Of Community: Buildings Of Portland's African American History, Darrell Millner, Carl Abbott, Cathy Galbraith

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Bosco-Milligan Foundation is proud to present "Cornerstones of Community - The Buildings of Portland's African American History". This publication had its start in February, 1994 when we sponsored a seminar and walking tour at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church to celebrate Black History Month. In the preparation for that program, we knew we had barely scratched the surface in identifying and documenting the buildings associated with African American individuals, institutions, and events throughout Portland's history. The Bosco-Milligan Foundation made a commitment to continue that effort, based on community interest and a collective desire to attempt to fill in important "missing …

Planning In The Portland Region: Lessons And Legacy, Ethan Seltzer Jun 1995

Planning In The Portland Region: Lessons And Legacy, Ethan Seltzer

Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies Publications

This paper examines the path that Portland and its region has taken from being a place showing little evidence of "modern city planning practice" to its current and apparently much more attractive state. First, a cautionary note. We have probably been both more and less successful than it sounds. Stories of municipal accomplishment tend to take on greater dimension the further you get from home. Take this one with a grain of salt. From the outside looking in, condition what you see with the following: First, there are no silver bullets or supremely right answers. It takes a mix of …

Do All Trails Lead To Oregon? An Analysis Of The Characteristics Of People Moving To And From Oregon, Howard Wineberg, Portland State University. Population Research Center

Oregon Population Estimates and Reports

Using 1990 U.S. Census data, this report has documented the characteristics of people moving to and from Oregon between 1985 and 1990. Substantial migration occurred during this time with about 404,000 people moving to Oregon and about 281,000 people leaving Oregon. Approximately one half of the people moving to Oregon came from California and Washington and about 60% of the people leaving Oregon moved to these two states. Differentials were found in the characteristics of in- and out-migrants. In particular, in-migrants were more likely to be below poverty, 65 years of age and older, and have difficulty speaking English than …

Least-Cost Transportation Planning In Odot: Feasability Report, Anthony M. Rufolo, Lois M. Bronfman, James G. Strathman Mar 1995

Least-Cost Transportation Planning In Odot: Feasability Report, Anthony M. Rufolo, Lois M. Bronfman, James G. Strathman

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

Least Cost Planning or Integrated Resource Planning is used in the electric utility industry to broaden the scope of choices to meet service requirements. This typically includes methods to reduce the demand for electricity as well as the more traditional electric generation options. Techniques have been developed to compare the cost of electricity generation with the cost of meeting service requirements by reducing electricity usage. In addition to cost considerations, utilities typically take account of uncertainty associated with forecasts and a variety of other considerations in specifying their least cost plan.

Illegal Homeless Camping In Portland: Field Analysis And Advocacy Planning, Chris Bernhardt, Doug Glancy, Doug Layne, Jeff Salvon Mar 1995

Illegal Homeless Camping In Portland: Field Analysis And Advocacy Planning, Chris Bernhardt, Doug Glancy, Doug Layne, Jeff Salvon

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

Homelessness is a major problem in Portland. Many people here cannot afford housing of any kind. Although the total number of homeless people in the city is not known, an estimated 14,000 Multnomah County residents spent time in homeless shelters during some part of 1993.

The goal of our group, which came together in November of 1994 in Portland State University's Planning Workshop, was to find ways to "improve the lives of homeless campers." Our lives were improved as well. We got to know interesting people, we had new experiences, we got to impress our friends with our knowledge of …

Archaeology And The Maroon Heritage In Jamaica, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1995

Archaeology And The Maroon Heritage In Jamaica, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Of all the fascinating aspects of Jamaican history, the Maroon Melement appears to be the only one that weaves through the whole period, including the present day. Referring to themselves as 'True blu chankofi piti bo," some Maroons of Moore Town in the parish of Portland claim that, with the exception of the freedom fighters of South Africa, they are the only living genuine and most honourable freedom fighters worthy of the name.

Civic Stadium Viability Study: A Regional Perspective, Dan Diessner, Tita Egan, Michael Harrison, David Taylor, Michael Weeks

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

From December 1994 through March 1995, the D2T2M consulting group took a serious look at the future of Civic Stadium and its position in the regional community. This study was prepared for the Portland Metropolitan Sports Authority.

In an effort to develop a series of alternative scenarios on the future of Civic Stadium the group conducted an exhaustive series of interviews and a national data search. These interviews included financial experts, event promoters, current tenants, city and regional officials, stadium experts, concerned citizens and others.

Language Typology And Reconstruction: The Prenasalized Stops Of Kisi, George Tucker Childs Jan 1995

Language Typology And Reconstruction: The Prenasalized Stops Of Kisi, George Tucker Childs

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The findings of language typologists can contribute to understanding synchronic variation where no diachronic facts are available. By establishing what happens universally, one can extrapolate as to the past and perhaps as to the future of a language on the basis of synchronic evidence. One approach within such a framework concentrates on a typologically unusual or marked feature on the assumption that its derivation may be established from less highly marked features. This paper discusses the typologically unusual prenasalized stops of Kisi, a Mel language belonging to the Southern Branch of (West) Atlantic. The approach adopted here is based on …

Redefining Maroon Heritage In The New World Studies, E. Kofi Agorsah Jan 1995

Redefining Maroon Heritage In The New World Studies, E. Kofi Agorsah

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Evidence from recent archaeological studies appear to suggest a redefinition of the heritage of runaway slave communities, referred to by the name Maroons and other terms. Now properly defined as the pioneer freedom fighters, it is also becoming clear that their heritage is a single constant strand in that of the New World. Contrary to previous views and descriptions which appear to indicate that these communities derived only from African slave escapees, historical and archaeological evidence from the Caribbean, and the Americas now reveal that the heritage of Maroon communities stemmed from the united force forged by between native American …

The Tripartite Model Of Rehabilitation Intervention: Basics, Goals And Rehabilitation Strategies, Hanoch Livneh Jan 1995

The Tripartite Model Of Rehabilitation Intervention: Basics, Goals And Rehabilitation Strategies, Hanoch Livneh

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper discusses the tripartite model of rehabilitation as embedded within the broader model of therapeutic interventions. Rehabilitation, or tertiary intervention, can be viewed as addressing specific goals as they relate to diverse functional limitations. The three phases, or components, of rehabilitation intervention discussed include: (a) disability minimization in an effort to reduce its impact upon life activities; (b) skill development, as an attempt to compensate for limitations imposed by permanent losses; and (c) environmental manipulation to promote physical and social-attitudinal accessibility. The paper concludes with discussion of the model's applicability to the field of rehabilitation counseling.

A New Era Of Water Quality Management In Agriculture: From Best Management Practices To Watershed-Based Whole Farm Approaches, David E. Ervin Jan 1995

A New Era Of Water Quality Management In Agriculture: From Best Management Practices To Watershed-Based Whole Farm Approaches, David E. Ervin

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Why is reducing water pollution from agriculture such a stubbornly slow process? Despite several policy initiatives since the 1970s, farms and ranches rank as the primary contributors to impairments of the nation's surface waters [U.S.EPA, 1994b]. Emerging research also points to agricultural chemicals in many cases of groundwater contamination [Barbash and Resek; Mueller, et al.]. After a little reflection, the industry's negative distinction may not be surprising. Covering nearly half the U.S. land base, crop and livestock production inevitably alter natural vegetative cover, apply fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation water, and involve animal wastes. All of these processes can degrade water …
