This paper was originally conceived as a thesis for a Master of Arts Degree in political science, which I received in June 1993. Formulation and completion of this study would not have been possible without constant encouragement and helpful comments provided by my supervisor, Prof. Salwa. Gomaa. I am especially grateful to her for her strong moral support during my times of despair while preparing this work. My gratitude also goes out to Prof. Moustafa K. El-Sayed and Dr. Noha El-Mikkawy, who agreed to be the readers for this thesis, despite their busy schedules. I am deeply indebted to Mr. …

The Politics Of Privatization In Egypt, Michelle Tadros
The Politics Of Privatization In Egypt, Michelle Tadros
Honors Theses
This is a study on the politics of privatization in Egypt Privatization is a current topic of interest because several countries in Latin America and in the Far 'East have successfully privati2ed their economies and entered into the world market system. This may have implications on the future competition industrialized nations face from the growing economies of the developing world. Moreover. the political and structural obstacles that LDCs face in attempting to liberalize their economies could lead to drastic changes in the political arrangements of these nations. For example, the turmoil in the Mexican government which has been in the …

Family, Gender, And Population Policy: Views From The Middle East, Jodi Jacobson
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This paper explores the relevance of international debates to the realities of the Middle East, an important but understudied region that has often been subject to stereotyping. The region’s wealth of traditions and diverse contemporary experience offer insights to those who venture beyond the surface appearance. This paper provides a broad introduction to the connections between family, gender, and population policy in the Middle East. It is based on studies by a diverse group of Middle East scholars and the discussions they generated in Cairo at an international symposium sponsored by the Population Council in February 1994. The paper was …
Early Marriage And Reproduction In Two Egyptian Villages, Laila El Hamamsy
Early Marriage And Reproduction In Two Egyptian Villages, Laila El Hamamsy
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
As noted in this monograph, marriage forms a central element of social life for Egyptians. Marriage in Egypt is nearly universal, and parents invest heavily to establish their children in married life. Once married, couples are faced with social pressures to begin childbearing immediately, a reflection of the high value placed on parenthood and children. But not all marriages begin with the same prospects for stability and satisfaction. This study draws attention to the problems faced by women who marry at very early ages in parts of rural Egypt. Despite a legal minimum age of 16, significant numbers of young …

Gender Inequalities And Demographic Behavior: Egypt, Nora Guhl Naguib, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Barbara L. Ibrahim
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
This is one of three reports on the relationship between gender equity, family structure and dynamics, and the achievement of reproductive choice prepared by the Population Council for the 1994 International Year of the Family and the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development. These reports provide critical reviews of the relationship between gender inequality and demographic behavior in three demographically significant, culturally distinct parts of the developing world: Egypt, India, and Ghana and Kenya. Their purpose is to help governments and international agencies design and implement policies that are affirmative of women, sensitive to the family's central role in …
