Patient Adherence And Adjustment In Renal Dialysis: A Person X Treatment Interactive Approach, Alan Christensen, Timothy Smith, Charles Turner, Kirt Cundick
Alan J. Christensen
We classified 52 in-center hemodialysis patients and 34 self-treated, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients on two latent variable indices reflecting patient coping style (i.e., Information Vigilance and Active Coping). The concurrent and prospective interactive effects of Dialysis Type and Coping Style were examined on patient dietary and medication adherence and on patient depression. In cross-sectional analyses, higher Information Vigilance was associated with better dietary adherence for CAPD patients but poorer adherence for In-Center Hemodialysis patients. No significant effects were found on a measure of medication adherence. Information Vigilance exerted a concurrent main effect on depression, such that higher scores …

Predictors Of Survival Among Hemodialysis Patients: Effect Of Perceived Family Support, Alan Christensen, John Wiebe, Timothy Smith, Charles Turner
Predictors Of Survival Among Hemodialysis Patients: Effect Of Perceived Family Support, Alan Christensen, John Wiebe, Timothy Smith, Charles Turner
Alan J. Christensen
The authors examined the role of perceived family support and symptoms of depression as predictors of survival in a sample of 78 in-center hemodialysis patients. Cox regression analysis revealed significant effects for family support (p<.005), blood urea nitrogen (p<.01), and age (p<.005). The effect for depression was not significant. The Cox model indicated that a 1-point increase on the family support measure was associated with a 13% reduction in the hazard rate (i.e., mortality). Estimated 5-year mortality rates among low family support patients were approximately 3 times higher than estimated mortality for high support patients. Differences in patient adherence to the dietary and medication regimens failed to explain the significant effect of family support. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2008 APA, all rights reserved)

A Cross-Cultural Study Of Directive Sequences And Some Implications For Compliance-Gaining Research, Kristine Fitch
A Cross-Cultural Study Of Directive Sequences And Some Implications For Compliance-Gaining Research, Kristine Fitch
Kristine Muñoz
Compliance gaining has been widely studied in communication research as a phenomenon central to interpersonal life. Yet the category of attempts to compel the actions of others, labeled as directives in pragmatics and ethnography, has received little specific attention, despite its close connection to actual spoken life. This essay presents an ethnographic examination of directive sequences in two speech communities, one in the U.S. and one in Colombia, with emphasis on the distinctive belief systems revealed by directive use. Data from several earlier studies of compliance gaining are then reexamined to show that patterns of results obtained in those studies …
Public Information Arrival, Thomas Berry, Keith Howe
Public Information Arrival, Thomas Berry, Keith Howe
Thomas D Berry
The authors develop a measure of public information flow to financial markets and use it to document the patterns of information arrival, with an emphasis on the intraday flows. The measure is the number of news releases by Reuter's News Service per unit of time. The authors find that public information arrival is nonconstant, displaying seasonalities and distinct intraday patterns. Next they relate their measure of public information to aggregate measures of intraday market activity. The authors' results suggest a positive, moderate relationship between public information and trading volume but an insignificant relationship with price volatility. Copyright 1994 by American …

Modified Trap Designs And Heights For Increased Capture Of Japanese Beetle Adults (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Stephen Alm, Tamson Yeh, Michelle Campo
Modified Trap Designs And Heights For Increased Capture Of Japanese Beetle Adults (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Stephen Alm, Tamson Yeh, Michelle Campo
Michelle L. Campo
Several trap designs and trap heights were tested on a golf course for effectiveness of capture of Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica Newman) adults. A single Trece trap top or four Trece trap tops (each with quarter-strength lures) on 121-liter trash container collection bases caught significantly more beetles than a standard Trece trap or a large vane trap on a 121-liter container. Traps with a single Trece trap top on a 121-liter container also caught significantly more beetles than a standard Trece trap when both types were emptied daily to determine if captured beetles were influencing trap capture. Significantly more beetles …

Party Contacting And Political Participation, 1952-90, Peter Wielhouwer
Party Contacting And Political Participation, 1952-90, Peter Wielhouwer
Peter W. Wielhouwer
Although the role of political parties in structuring vote choice has become considerably weaker in the last 30 years, we find that parties continue to be active organizations and contact one-fifth to one-quarter of the electorate, an activity that has important consequences. Specifically, when contacted by the parties, individuals have a greater propensity to vote and to engage in other political activities. We also find that each of the two major parties has the capability of mobilizing the electorate even when it is not the incumbent party. Even when placed alongside a plethora of control variables, these findings hold up. …
Cognitive Distortion And Depression In Chronic Pain: Association With Diagnosed Disorders, Timothy Smith, Jennifer O'Keeffe, Alan Christensen
Cognitive Distortion And Depression In Chronic Pain: Association With Diagnosed Disorders, Timothy Smith, Jennifer O'Keeffe, Alan Christensen
Alan J. Christensen
Previous studies have demonstrated that cognitive distortion is associated with increased levels of self-reported depression among chronic pain patients, suggesting that cognitive models of depression might be useful in this context. However, reliance on self-reports of depression hampers generalization of these results to clinically significant depressive disorders. To address this problem, we examined the association between depression diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-III-Revised (DSM-III-R) (i.e., major depression and dysthymia) and scores on the Cognitive Errors Questionnaire. Depressed chronic pain patients and depressed nonpain patients reported more cognitive distortion than did nondepressed pain patients and normal …

Culture, Communication, And Preferences For Directness In Expression Of Directives, Kristine Fitch
Culture, Communication, And Preferences For Directness In Expression Of Directives, Kristine Fitch
Kristine Muñoz
Although much research and discussion about culture and communication focuses on the importance of cultural specifics, efforts to theorize in that area tend to begin from apparent universals, and then move to examination of cultural practices as diverse realizations of those universals. This article examines a particular case of cross-cultural theorizing, in regard to preferences for expression of directives. Speakers can opt to express directives, as well as other speech acts, in either a direct or indirect way. A preference for indirect directives has often been assumed in cross-cultural theorizing. Yet a close examination of data from three cultures characterized …
