Used a simultaneous presentation procedure to select quality reinforcers for 2 identical twin boys (aged 4 yrs) in a summer school program, who were developmentally delayed, noncompliant, and mute. Use of the simultaneous presentation procedure quickly and efficiently helped determine each boy's preferred reinforcer. This preferred reinforcer was then used in an instructional task. For both Ss, the percentage of compliance increased over baseline levels during both the simultaneous presentation and preferred reinforcer phases. However, increased compliance was associated almost exclusively with the selection of each S's preferred reinforcer. In recent years there have been an extraordinary number of proposals for comprehensive and intensive changes in school structure, finance, and administration, one indication that this is a time of unprecedent change for schools. Crisis Intervention: An Evaluation Of Services Provided To Families Of Sexually Abused Children In Davis County, Utah, Karen Louise Letts

This study assessed the extent to which victim families are or are not helped by the support services in Davis County, Utah. A sample of 29 mothers of sexually abused children indicated that existing intervention services were greatly underutilized and hard to locate. Seventeen of these mothers reported that they were either ignored by their caseworkers or, conversely, told not to get counseling until their case was adjudicated because of the investigator's belief that any exposure to therapy might erode the child's credibility as a witness. This study examined reinforcement of compliance with positive (''do'') and negative ("don't") commands, along with its effects on inappropriate behavior in children. The design of the study was A-B· A-C-B-C counterbalanced across two subjects. In both subjects, reinforcement of compliance to .. do" commands resulted in increased compliance to this type of command. Similarly, reinforcement of compliance with "don't" commands resulted in increased compliance to "don't" commands. In addition, a tendency for compliance with the reinforced type of command to generalize to the nonreinforced type was observed in some phases. Response covariation was.also observed in some phases. Creating Informal Play Opportunities: Are Parents' And Preschoolers' Initiations Related To Children's Competence With Peers?, Gary W. Ladd, Craig H. Hart

Preschoolers' social competence may depend on the frequency with which informal play activities are initiated by parents', children, and playmates. In this study, measures ofchildren's peer relations in informal and school contexts and the frequency of parents', children's, and peers' play initiations were obtained with 83 preschool children and their families on 2 occasions. Frequent parent initiations were associated with higher levels of prosocial behavior, lower levels of nonsocial behavior and, among boys, greater peer acceptance in preschool. Children who were more initiating of informal peer contacts displayed less anxious behavior in school and were better liked by their classmates. …
