On 17 May 1955, dedication ceremonies for the Arcata Community Forest were held by the Arcata Redwood Circle of the Redwood Region Conservation Council, which sent out 2,500 invitations to the event. The first municipally owned forest in the State of California, Arcata's 6OO-acre Forest was to be "managed for the benefit of all the citizens of the city, with attention to watershed, recreation, timber management and other values (Humboldt Times, 15 May 1955).

The Arcata Volunteer Fire Department was organized on January 24 1884 in response to a growing awareness that the pump-and-bucket operation on the town's Plaza was inadequate to protect the business district. A necessary part of that new department, of course, was a dependable water system; the organization of the Union Water Co. took place in December 1883. This report covers the establishment and history of the Union Water Company.

As contemporaries and historians noted, the development of the ethnic American depended upon a unique blend of two cultures. This study has illustrated that fact, beginning with the sources of immigration. We found that immigration resulted from a complex interplay of European and American factors, which influenced not only the immigrant and his community, but the old culture as well. For example, the existence of plentiful American farmland led to an immigration to American farms. As American produce then rose in volume, more was exported to Europe, contributing to an agricultural crisis in Denmark. That in turn generated a new …
