The United States And China: From Noncommunication To Diplomatic Relations, Mary Jeanne Patrick

Masters Theses

After more than two decades of fundamental differences due to lack of direct diplomatic relations, the People's Republic of China and the United States are developing a harmonious working relationship. Friendly relations between these two major nations began to improve in 1972 during President Richard Nixon's visit to China that had been arranged by Henry Kissinger, Assistant for National Security Affairs.

The purpose of this thesis is to show that nations can overcome their negative stereotyped images with one another when their leaders will enter into effective communication.

Chapter I considers the historical aspects of the Sino-American relationship.

Chapter II …

Liberation, Eschatology And Politics In Latin American Liberation Theology, H. Dennis Campbell

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

One readily observable fact about theology is its multiplicity of branches. It is a field of study that embraces a wide variety of interpretations and schools of thought. This diversity has emerged as a result of different emphases in interpretations, variety in education, sociocultural backgrounds, and differing objectives behind the formulation of theological thought. It is readily reflected at the practical level by the numerous denominations within Christendom, each possessing its own theological distinctives. Diversity also manifests~. itself at the academic level in the numerous choices of courses available to the student desirous of studying theology. It would almost appear …

Management Studies: Roosevelt City Fire Department And Vehicle Maintenance Division, Roosevelt, Utah, Rendal D. Esplin

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The recent and rapid development of energy producing natural resources experienced in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming has created major growth problems for roosevelt City as well as all other political subdivisions located within the region. Emphasis on efficient management of public programs has been one of several methods utilized by Roosevelt City to meet the growing demand for municipal services. This is necessary as some services such as fire protection, are managed jointly with other municipalities. Then too, with inflation driving up operating costs, it is essential to carefully control expenditures of all public programs. The management studies conducted on …

Core Size, Pricing, And Cost Structure, William K. Edwards May 1979

Core Size, Pricing, And Cost Structure, William K. Edwards

Economics Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents a proof of an inverse limit theorem of the core of an economy. The implication of the theorem is that a larger core can be obtained by the formation of coalitions. A large core contains multiple Pareto optimal allocations from which society may select in order to maximize its welfare. Furthermore, this paper places an emphasis on pricing schemes that guarantee a core allocation under increasing returns to scale. Two pricing models are introduced that guarantee a non-empty core under increasing returns to scale.

"The Evil That Men Do Lives After Them" (Sometimes): A Study Of Twentieth Century Analysis Of Plato's Political Theory, Merril Hirsch

Honors Papers

This paper has two purposes. The first is to develop a theory about what approach to the ideas of the past in general, and Plato in particular, will help us the most in learning how to act in politics. I hope to do this by examining and evaluating the ways in which the 20th Century analysts have looked at Plato. The second purpose is to provide an example of the type of analysis I believe to be most useful. I hope to apply my approach not to Plato, but to those who have analyzed Plato, in an effort to make …

Continuity And Change: Consociational Democracy In The Benelux Countries, John Hunter Porter Williams Jan 1979

Continuity And Change: Consociational Democracy In The Benelux Countries, John Hunter Porter Williams

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This study seeks to examine and refine the concept of consociational democracy, a political system in which political leaders of socially and politically distinct groups interact with one another in an atmosphere of moderation and mutual accommodation.

A discussion of the explanations, suggested by various political theorists, of the political behavior and relationships in a consociational democracy produced a list of the basic characteristics of the system. Characteristics which were either ambiguous or ascribable to other political systems were eliminated.

The Benelux countries— Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg— are three countries which have moderate political systems similar to the general …

The Role Of Socio-Economic Status In Determining Voting Behavior In Richmond, Virginia, Arthur Henry Verburg

In this paper I will explore one such answer: the role of socio-economic status (SES). The area of study will be the City of Richmond, Virginia, during the years 1968-1973.

The Political Integration Of The Kurds In Turkey, Kathleen Palmer Ertur

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the situation of the Kurdish minority in Turkey within the theoretical parameters of political integration. The problem: are the Kurds in Turkey politically integrated? Within the definition of political development generally, and of political integration specifically, are found problem areas inherent to a modernizing polity. These problem areas of identity, legitimacy, penetration, participation~ and distribution are the basis of analysis in determining the extent of political integration for the Kurds in Turkey. When these five problem areas are adequately dealt with in order to achieve the goals of equality, capacity and differentiation, …

The Military As Agents Of Development: The Nigerian Case-Study, 1970-1979, William Ross Ennenbach Jan 1979

The Military As Agents Of Development: The Nigerian Case-Study, 1970-1979, William Ross Ennenbach

Masters Theses

The nation of Nigeria, located in sub-Saharan West Africa, was considered one of the former European colonies possessing the potentials after its independence in 1960 to develop itself as both a viable political as well as economic system. The attributes so often identified with such successful developmental efforts of nations in the past--abundant human and natural resources--were the positive factors political scientists and economists considered as being of primary importance if the full potentials of Nigeria were to be realized.

However, the road towards the economic and political development of Nigeria has not been an easy one due to several …

Civil Rights And The Anglo-Jewish Press In Canada: 1930-1970, Irwin Pollock Jan 1979

Civil Rights And The Anglo-Jewish Press In Canada: 1930-1970, Irwin Pollock

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Relative to other countries, such as the United States, there exists little scholarly work on minority groups in Canada. Aside from filling a natural academic void, minority studies are especially relevant because of this country’s multi-ethnic composition. In particular, this study attempts to examine certain attitudes found within the press of one minority group—Jewish Canadians.

Canada’s Jewish community has not hesitated to involve itself in almost all aspects of Canadian society—academia, science, politics, etc. It has also not hesitated to comment through its own press, on the urgent political issues of the day. In this study I will focus on …

A Critique And Analysis Of The Decline-Of-Ideology Thesis, George Nikolakakos Jan 1979

A Critique And Analysis Of The Decline-Of-Ideology Thesis, George Nikolakakos

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The exponents of the decline-of-ideology thesis have failed to provide a serious analysis of the political, economic, and ideological trends of the period. They were wrong in their predictions that Marxism and radical ideologies would lose their power to motivate. They were also wrong in their predictions that the two great ideological systems were converging. Not only did they fail to provide an analysis of the political, economic, and ideological trends of the period, but they also failed to provide a serious analysis of ideology as a concept.

In an attempt to define ideology, I trace its appearance and usage …

A Study Of Decision Making: The Case Of Brown And Root, Inc., Mary Blossom Springle

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Studies

The process of community decision making has been examined by many theorists in the field of political science. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the case of Brown and Root, Inc., a marine fabrication industry that hoped to construct a large plant in the rural town of Cape Charles, Virginia. The industry underwent a lengthy decision-making process before a final decision was made.

This case was selected because a wide variety of factors affected the ultimate outcome of the decision-making process. Because the decision-making process covered a five year time span in this case, it includes more factors …
