The objective of this study was to find where economies in scale lie, and what, if any, would be the preferred or most economical in packing facilities. Data relative to equipment and labor requirements and capabilities and to materials and services were obtained through manufacturers, sales agencies, research studies and case studies. Two computerized programs were developed to select equipment, labor, and facilities which would be most efficient and least-cost and this was done for packing 10-pound bags with potatoes. Tourism and recreation constitute a growing and important part of Maine's economy. During 1973, Maine's tourist industry accounted for nearly $259 million of direct expenditures by tourists who spent an estimated 22.5 million tourist days in the State (4, p.2). This business activity provided 6.5 percent of 1973 total employment for all industries in Maine and generated state government tax revenues of nearly $30 million or approximately 6 percent of all state revenues for that year (4, p. 3).

I could have listened to Sparky Rucker for the entire 4 1/2 hours. That's how long the Friday night installment of Folksongs in February was. Sparky Rucker was the last performer of the evening, going on at 11:40 [p.m.]. Believe me, at that hour, his performance was like a shot of adrenalin. Six hundred pairs of eyes and ears suddenly snapped to attention. Black southern traditional music presented with such explosive, energetic, boot-stomping depth—what a finish!!

What I will do in this short paper is to describe singing as it occurred in the lumbercamps of Maine during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. What was its function, when, where, and (in broad terms only) how was it done; who were the singers, and what was the basic repertoire? Rather, the intent is to provide information and judgments which can help people recognize the potential for changes and take appropriate steps to prepare for, accommodate, and adjust to those changes. Thus we hope that this report's success will be measured by how well it provides information with which local citizens and all others involved in this project can proceed with their planning and decision-making processes.
