Young people today are confronted with many problems in their everyday lives. It is difficult to tell how each individual overcomes these problems, but we do know that some problems are overcome more easily than others. This study was concerned with two problem levels, (a) those problems which were merely troublesome, and (b) those problems which were worrying. There is an apparent cycle in the history and appeal of a particular sport. When this cycle is completed there is a need for re-examination and change to initiate a further cycle. Judo in the Western world would appear to be reaching the end of such a cycle and examination and change is necessary for a variety of historical and cultural reasons to ensure that the sport of Judo embarks on another important cycle.

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the present programs of physical education in Kentucky colleges; to determine the degree to which they meet the competitive sports needs of college women; and to explore the possibilities for enriching the program and to make recommendations for correcting inadequacies.

In considering the inclusion of a program of intercollegiate sports competition for college women, three questions are basic.
