Consumer Bankruptcies In Bernalillo County, New Mexico, William C. Madden Jr.

Economics ETDs

A serious problem in the United States is the increasing number of bankruptcies filed each year. The number of bankruptcies in the last decade alone tripled. In 1956, there were 68,086 bankruptcies, and in 1966, the number reached a new record of 192,354.1 This increase, however, is not attributed to business failures, but to the rise in consumer bankruptcies; that is, individuals and families who seek alleviation from their financial distress in the courtroom. Since 1950, more than three-fourths of all bankruptcies filed in the United States District Courts have been consumer types. Presently they constitute over ninety percent of …

A Study Of Input-Output Adjustments, Charles W. Briggs May 1967

A Study Of Input-Output Adjustments, Charles W. Briggs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effects of using the United States input-output table to explain Israel's economic structure was studied, by comparing price data generated on the basis of the U. S. tables and prices observed in the two countries. A substantial difference between prices generated and observed led to the conclusion that the technological structure of the United States cannot be used to approximate Israel's structure.

Various adjustments were then applied to the United States coefficient matrix to determine if it could be transformed into a new technological structure which would more closely approximate Israel's economy.

Significant improvements were noted by three of …

Description And Evaluation Of Institutions Involved In Water Allocation And Distribution In Utah, Kimber C. Webb

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water development and allocation have been among the most important problems Utah has had to face throughout the past 117 years of development . When Utah's first white settlers, the Mormon pioneers, entered Salt Lake Valley in July of 1847, little met their eyes to entice their stay. The earth was so parched and dry that they were unable to scratch the surface with their plows. Less than two hours after their arrival members of the party began digging ditches and building dams to irrigate and soften the earth so they could begin plowing.

An Evaluation Of The Dichotomy Between Structural Versus Deficient-Demand Unemployment, Carl D. Parker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis is addressed to the theoretical controversy which revolves around the explanation of the higher unemployment rates that prevailed after 1957. The debate that has been generated concerning the causes of this unemployment problem is usually referred to as the "structural" versus "deficient-demand" debate. An attempt is made to present a representative view of both sides of the debate as well as a critical evaluation of both positions. Care is taken to keep both positions separated for each leads to entirely different policy recommendations. A more general theoretical structure is presented which will be useful in analyzing the relevance …

A Study Of The Natural Rubber Industry, With Special Reference To Thailand, Suratana Vayagool

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relative share of natural rubber in the world's total rubber consumption had been decreasing from 75 percent in 1948- 1949 to 44.4 percent in 1965. Since the production of natural rubber has been rising over the same period, some predictions have been made indicating that there will be a surplus of production over consumption of natural rubber in the near future.

In the world output of natural rubber industry, Thailand ranks third, being surpassed only by Malaysia and Indonesia. Of all the exports of Thailand, rubber ranks second in value and is exceeded only by rice. Almost all of …

Newspaper Advertising, Retail Pricing Practices, And Gross Retail Margins For Turkeys In Selected Utah And Other U. S. Markets For Various Years And Seasons, Gerry R. Flake

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Newspaper advertising and retail pricing practices for turkeys were ascertained and gross retail margins established for three Utah markets, 1955 to 1966, and for 12 other selected U. S. markets, 1965 and 1966.

Turkey was extensively used as an advertised special item, particularly in holiday seasons. Food retailing organizations advertised turkey at low prices and margins at Thanksgiving and Christmas when consumer demand for turkey is traditionally strong. Prior to these holidays, food retailing organizations in a market simultaneously advertised turkey at identical prices and with little product differentiation thus limiting the effectiveness of turkey as an advertised item to …

Background And Review Of National Labor Relations Board And Court Decisions In The Area Of Managements Prerogatives - The Darlington And General Electric Cases, Charles W. Bullen Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effects of the Darlington case on managements prerogatives was that it spelled out what a multi-plant employer must do in the area of plant closure to avoid violating the National Labor Relations Act of 1935. There was also good evidence brought forth to show that management is now bargaining plant closures with union. Thus the conclusion was made that in the area multi-plant employers had lost some power due to the Darlington Case.

The General Case is presently in the Courts and until a final court decision is made it is hard to say what effect it will have …

The Feasibility Of The Location Of A Steel Fabrication Plant In The State Of Utah, A. Brent Pulsipher May 1967

The Feasibility Of The Location Of A Steel Fabrication Plant In The State Of Utah, A. Brent Pulsipher

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The feasibility of locating the major household appliance industry in Utah was studied by comparing a Utah location with present production sites for this commodity.

Major elements of cost were projected in detail according to a hypothetically constructed model. The Utah location showed advantages in transportation and labor costs while at the same time having a disadvantage in the cost of steel.

Since the analysis is made with respect to the model, which is based on certain assumptions, the use of different models would naturally lead to different results.

Both the advantages and disadvantages of the Utah location would most …

The Federal Reserve System, a little over fifty years old, is now the dominant force in the monetary policy of our nation's economy. The United States And African Nationalism In British East Africa Since 1945, Clarence A. Allison

OBU Graduate Theses

World War II brought about a realignment of the power structure among the nations of the world. The primary conflict of interest developed between Russian and the Western nations, with the United States predominant among them.

Through the leverage afforded by the East-West conflict, African nations were able to exert enough force to dislodge the colonial powers which had ruled them for nearly a century.

Early efforts to unite the African people were carried out in the United States and other Western nations, with American Negroes leading the drive. Among these men were W.E.B. DuBois and Marcus Garvey.

The United …
