Introduction

The Problem

The problem in this investigation is to determine the characteristics of lower status Negro mothers and their families and to determine whether specific characteristics are associated with the utilization or acceptance of traditional or developmental child rearing attitudes. More specifically, this investigation will attempt to determine what cognate relationships prevail in the various segments of lower status Negro mothers with respect to their exhibiting traditional or developmental child rearing attitudes and their relative social status position, family composition, and mother's social contact frequency.

Adaptability is a trait which has been attributed to Navajo Indians by anthropologists, educators, novelists, psychologists, artists -- in fact, by almost everyone who has had dealings with them over a period of time. Yet, to identify specific examples of their adaptability and the attempt to measure the effect upon interpersonal relations of evidences of adaptation has proved to be no easy task.

Since this writer has been confused by what seems to her to be radically different attitudes toward marriage and divorce in her own home town (Las Vegas, Nevada) and in Utah communities where she has been residing for the past five years, the social adjustment of female divorcees in these two locations was studied. The purpose was to begin to build knowledge about postdivorce adjustment, and it is hoped that future students of the family will be inspired to further investigate postdivorce problems.
