Persistence Of A Culture's Patterns In Prisons Of War, Anne Hoffman Senter

Sociology ETDs

This study is an investigation of prisoner of war sociology, specifically that of Japanese-controlled prison camps in which American soldiers captured in the Philippine Islands in the spring of 1942 were confined for almost three and one-half years. It is an attempt to discover the informal social social structure obtaining in these camps and helps answer answer the question of what happened when the existing social structure of the army was torn down and the men were thrown into a life requiring a rebuilding and realignment of social relationships and values.

The Pentecostal Move At Sia Pueblo: Individual Deviation And Group Reintergration As A Result Of Peer Pressure, Jennifer Chatfield

Anthropology ETDs

The present study concerns itself with the attempt of certain persons to live individualistically in contrast to the accepted plan of life in Sia pueblo, and to change portions of their native culture to suit their newly acquired concepts.

The processes of culture change are of fundamental interest to the anthropologists. And as knowledge concerning the processes has increased, interest in them has branched out and new methods of approach to their study have been realized. These methods are not essentially one better than the other, nor even one more fruitful than another, but they vary in the specificity to …

A Study Of Culture Resistance: The Veterans Of World War Ii At Zuni Pueblo, John Joseph Adair

Anthropology ETDs

How does a pueblo resist the values, ideas, and habits of contemporary Western culture which are pressing in on it from all sides? This is the problem in its broadest aspect which will be examined in this dissertation.

Specifically I shall examine the way in which the Zuni veterans of World War II met with a buffer of resistance when they returned to the pueblo from war service, bringing with them non-pueblo values, ideas, and habits which they had acquired while away from home.

A Study Of The Suffrage Of The Arizona And New Mexico Indian, Laird J. Dunbar Jun 1948

A Study Of The Suffrage Of The Arizona And New Mexico Indian, Laird J. Dunbar

Political Science ETDs

The present Indian population of the United States is about 500,000. This figure is to be found in no report of which the author is aware, but is the figure given him by an Indian Office official as that which approximates the total of both Indians registered with that office and of those not on their rolls. According to an estimate of the Indian office, based on its records, the states of Arizona and New Mexico had Indian populations of 56,573 and 43,904 as of January 1, 1946. These figures have undoubtedly increased in the interim, as the Indians constitute …

Corporation Income Tax Policy, Dee D. Sturges Jun 1948

Corporation Income Tax Policy, Dee D. Sturges

Economics ETDs

Randolph E. Paul's recent book, Taxation for Prosperity, more nearly coincides with the purpose of this study. The historical approach is used, and an attempt is made to formulate a more or less consistent policy for the immediate future. It covers the subject of federal taxation with emphasis on income taxes, but both the individual and corporation income tax are considered together with estate and trust taxes. In view of the proposal now before Congress to integrate the latter with the former taxes, this comprehensive treatment has merit.

However, this study is limited in scope and further differs from …

An Inquiry Into The Efficiency Of Trout Stocking With Emphasis On Economic Aspects, Orville Charles Fuqua Apr 1948

An Inquiry Into The Efficiency Of Trout Stocking With Emphasis On Economic Aspects, Orville Charles Fuqua

Economics ETDs

Fish culture is an activity which for almost a century has been graced with public favor. Since the discovery that fish could be spawned and raised artificially, people have delighted in its presumed possibilities, but seldom have they realized that fish culture has definite limitations. The average angler of the average citizen, although he keeps a scrutinizing eye on matters of taxes and public expenditures, is rarely known to disapprove of fish hatcheries and the stocking of streams and lakes with fish.

A Survey Of Forest Taxation In The United States, Cyrus L. Fairless Jan 1948

A Survey Of Forest Taxation In The United States, Cyrus L. Fairless

Economics ETDs

Forests occupy a well known and vital part of our national economy. Few people will dispute the fact that the proper care and maintenance of our forests is necessary to meet the increasing demands of the country for more lumber, lumber by-products, grazing land, soil protection, flood control, and recreational facilities. Furthermore, forests serve as a huge national reservoir for the nation's supply of rainfall, a factor that can hardly be underestimated, especially in the Rocky Mountain area. It is therefore easy to conclude that one of our major problems is to prevent the widespread deforestation of the United States …

A Tentative Description And Classification Of Tewa Verb Structure, Edward Dozier

Anthropology ETDs

This paper presents only a portion of an exhaustive study of the verb structure in process. The purpose here is to illustrate the method of analysis, to describe significant features briefly, and to group Tewa verbs into a few distinctive classes. Tewa verb structures have been analyzed carefully and their basic elements isolated. The most important feature of verb constructions, the verb theme, has been exposed in this manner. In terms of the verb theme Tewa verbs may be divided into several categories which have been illustrated with examples in Chapter V.

Primary Mental Abilities Of The Feebleminded, Dorice Elva Ames Jan 1948

Primary Mental Abilities Of The Feebleminded, Dorice Elva Ames

Psychology ETDs

It was the purpose of this study (1) to determine whether or not some of various types of feebleminded fall down differentially on any of the components of the tests more than on others, i.e., whether or not the hydrocephalics, for example, would run relatively high on verbal-meaning, whereas the mongoliana would run relatively high on space; and (2) to determine whether or not, considering the feebleminded group as a whole, there would be any significant differences in primary mental abilities .
