New Regionalism In Global Order: Regional Trade Integration And Its Links With Financial Sector, Tulu Balkir

This dissertation evaluates the linkages of regional trade integration with regional financial integration and financial development in the EU and the ASEAN. The research utilizes quantitative and qualitative data to analyze development of banking sector and capital markets in these two regions, reviews related integration initiatives in the EU and ASEAN banking sectors and capital markets and their possible links with regional trade. The results mainly indicate that banking sector and capital markets perform important functions to provide financing to firms and infrastructure projects, to hedge trade and project risks and to support macro-financial stability, all of which can support …

Changes in immigration patterns and differential fertility choices shape the economies of both developed and developing countries. However, these changes affect the economies of developed and developing nations in different ways. This study aims to understand the changes in population dynamics, brought about by differences in cross--country differential fertility choices and migration patterns, and how these changes affect economic development via the channels of international trade and cross--country human capital accumulation.

The United States is the leading producer and exporter of corn and soybeans in the world. The United States exports 20% of the world’s corn and 30% of soybeans in a typical year (USDA, ERS). The U.S., being the top producer and exporter of these commodities, is also confronting major rivals such as Argentina, Brazil, and Ukraine, which are increasing their exports and causing the U.S. to lose some of its market share. As European colonialism was the dominant system of long-distance governance and resource appropriation for centuries, its economic legacies are diverse albeit understated. The existing research looks mainly at the effects of colonialism on a former colony's internal development. This study broadens that scope, looking at which factors are correlated with the presence or absence of a trade agreement with the European Union as well as the number of restrictions to free trade within them.
