An Examination Of The Relationship Between Self-Compassion And Burnout In Practicing Psychotherapists : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Jennifer Ann Thurlow

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Burnout is particularly a problem among people whose work involves responding to human suffering; therefore, without adequate personal resources to draw from, psychotherapists are especially at risk. Self-compassion is a powerful coping skill, thus therapists may be protected from burnout through the practice. The purpose of this study was to examine how self-compassion is related to burnout in practicing psychotherapists. It was hypothesized that higher total self-compassion scores would be associated with lower scores on the burnout subscales of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and that higher scores of total self-compassion would be associated with higher scores on the burnout subscale …

Engagement And Retention Of Clients With Co-Occurring Disorders : Practice Wisdom Of A Multidisciplinary Treatment Unit : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Marsha Kay Odell

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders typically have multiple impairments making them difficult to engage and retain in treatment. The most consistent finding across studies is that the most effective service delivery is integrated, i.e. the same clinician or clinical team provides appropriate mental health and substance abuse interventions in a coordinated fashion in a single setting with a goal of helping the client to manage both illnesses. While critical components of integrated service delivery have been identified, how these components are successfully integrated to engage and retain clients in a case has been more elusive. This …

The Donut Hole : A Qualitative Study Of Seniors Who Have Fallen Into The Medicare Part D Coverage Gap : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Benjamin Todd Weiss

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

When Medicare Part D was unveiled in 2006 one controversial feature was the inclusion of a coverage gap which potentially forced enrollees to pay thousands of dollars out-of-pocket. This thesis asked the question: How has falling into the donut hole affected seniors' views and feelings of health insurance and government, and how has this experience informed their sense of civic engagement? Two hypotheses were presented at the outset of this qualitative study. The first was that since seniors are a particularly active demographic they would respond to the donut hole experience with some kind of political action. The second supposed …
