The Motherland Calls!: Nationalist Propaganda In The Soviet Union During The Great Patriotic War, Carolyn Blood

Senior Theses

This thesis examines the Soviet Union’s methods of promoting nationalism during World War II in specific relation to newspapers, film, and poster propaganda. The Soviet Union used traditional and heroic imagery in propaganda with the intention to inspire nationalism during World War II in an effort to unify and strengthen its citizenry. Through the integration of modern language and traditional imagery, Soviet propaganda during World War II sought to reach out to citizens of all ages and unite them in the face of conflict with Germany. Poster and newspaper propaganda centered around individual “extraordinary ordinary” heroes: Soviet citizens who risked …

War Of Words: Framing Of The United States In Selected Belarusian Newspapers In 2009, Natalie Manayeva

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the peculiarities of framing of the United States in selected Belarusian newspapers during first six months of the Obama administration. The concepts of anti-Americanism, authoritarian model of mass media and framing were chosen as a theoretical framework. This study was focused on the two main questions: first, what is the difference in how Belarusian state-run and independent newspapers frame the U.S., and second, what is the mechanism of creating negative image of the U.S. in Belarusian newspapers. In order to provide comprehensive answers to both questions the multi-method approach (involving methods of …

Managing Complexity And Change In International Relations: The Case Of Yemen, Michael J. Culton Aug 2010

Managing Complexity And Change In International Relations: The Case Of Yemen, Michael J. Culton

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Matters of war and peace may be as old as civilization itself but the definitions and practices of each are constantly evolving. Innumerable theories and models have been developed over the past few centuries, which are designed to explain modern international politics. As academics and policymakers debate their assumptions regarding conflict and cooperation, current events challenge their intellectual foundations and may even serve to overturn them. The scholars and practitioners of foreign policy may have reached the point where the traditional explanations of political behavior can no longer account for the pressing issues of the day. In such an age …

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Academic Achievement Among Ghanaian Youth, Ziblim Abukari Aug 2010

Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Academic Achievement Among Ghanaian Youth, Ziblim Abukari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Young people in Ghana who grow up in poverty and to families with little or no education endure limited early learning opportunities, underfunded educational systems, and more health and mental health problems compared to their peers from more privileged backgrounds. A significant body of literature addressing the relationship among risk, protection, resilience and academic achievement is based on youth populations in North America and Western Europe. Relatively little is known about the applicability of ecological and risk and resilience frameworks in non-Western countries. Consequently, educational outcomes of young people in Ghana are often characterized by similarities in low achievement, lack …

Influence Of Financial And Policy Environments On The Business Strategy Of Biotechnology Companies In India, Sumesh Mohan Arora

Dissertations

The biotechnology industry thrives on innovation and new knowledge creation, but is also capital intensive with a complex regulatory environment (Hine and Kapeleris 2007). It is seen as a sunrise industry by the Indian government (Natesh and Bhan 2009). Current literature on the business strategy of Indian biotechnology companies and the influence from external factors is very limited. The objective of this research was to qualitatively test the applicability of the Miles and Snow (1978) theory of organizational behavior which describes four strategy choices: prospector, analyzer, defender and reactor, in the context of the Indian biotechnology sector. Research on Western …

Civil wars affect the social systems of a nation, including higher education. The purpose of this study was to do an in-depth concurrent mixed method analysis of the perceived impacts of the 14-year (1989–2003) civil war on higher education institutions in Liberia during the civil war years and from the end of the civil war in 2003 to the point of data collection in 2007. Cooperative Strategies On Parallel Tracks: The Nepad And Agoa Initiatives, Guelmbaye Ngarsandje

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

In July 2001, at the 37th of the former Organization of African Unity, African heads of states launched the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), a combination of the Omega Plan from Abdoulaye Wade and The Millennium African Renaissance Partnership initiated by Thabo Mbeki, respectively presidents of Senegal and South Africa. This was an achievement of tasks given by their peers in Algiers in 1999. Previously to that, the Clinton administration initiated the African Growth and Opportunity Act passed in law in 1998. Though the two programs aim at African development, they did not take in account each other.

(Re)Imagining Taiwan: Taiwanese Cultural Nationalism In Film And Literature, 1970-1990s, Keith Goodwin

History

The study of Taiwan's history is permeated by questions of identity. Since 1600, the island has been, among other things, a Dutch colonial outpost, a refuge for Ming loyalists, a provincial frontier of the Qing Dynasty, a Japanese colony, and, since the end of World War II, the home of the Republic of China (ROC). However, sixty years after Taiwan's "retrocession" to the government of Chiang Kai-shek, questions of Taiwan's cultural and national identity persist.

This paper takes the 1970s to be an important turning point in Taiwan's identity discourse. Beginning with a discussion of the various political and diplomatic …

Gender, Empowerment And Coffee In Mexico And Central America: A Policy Analysis, Lisa M. Fry Jun 2010

Gender, Empowerment And Coffee In Mexico And Central America: A Policy Analysis, Lisa M. Fry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Coffee is an important commodity for Central American countries. Like other agricultural production, coffee production in the region is undergoing a “feminization” in which women become the primary producers. However, female agricultural producers face constraints that their male counterparts do not. This study analyzes policies to determine if they promote or continue the inhibition of empowerment of female coffee producers. The results of the study indicate that policies relating to Central American coffee production are promoting women’s empowerment, but implementation remains weak. Policy recommendations are included.

Water Resources In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Mali, Ria Elise O'Brien May 2010

Water Resources In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Mali, Ria Elise O'Brien

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The world is experiencing the first effects of the water crisis and its importance will become more prevalent in the next few decades. In this study, the case is made that there are steps that can be taken that can improve the standard of living for people by addressing the water needs of both rural and urban areas affected by the water crisis. If the standard of living was increased using the advice given in the thesis, Mali would then serve as an example for what could be done right in other arid areas.

Economic Implications Of Anti-Americanism, Brenda Jennifer Bee May 2010

Economic Implications Of Anti-Americanism, Brenda Jennifer Bee

Honors Capstone Projects - All

This capstone project is a multidisciplinary investigation into a problem that has surfaced with the rise of globalization. It explores the negative sentiments in Europe towards Americans, their recent history, and future implications. It was designed to be multidisciplinary because of the complexity of the issue at hand. It stretches from political to anthropological, both in the context of communications and economics and finally their synergistic affect in fostering certain feelings in different European nations about the American way of life. I show how certain negative feelings can change behavior and preferences for American goods and services and how it …

More Audacity Of Hope: International Perspectives On What It Means To Be American, Megan Brimmer May 2010

More Audacity Of Hope: International Perspectives On What It Means To Be American, Megan Brimmer

Honors Capstone Projects - All

What, from an international perspective, does it mean to be an American? After having spent so much time in other countries and seeing how people elsewhere felt about the U.S., I had to wonder, what about the people who actually come to America? What is it that draws them here and makes them want to stay or return? Do they view America as a pinnacle of perfection and hope and opportunity, or are we really perceived as the dregs of a consumption-driven world as some fear? In talking to international students from all over the world, I have found answers …

Exploring International Economic Development Through Environmental Justice Movement Frame, Racquel Clarke

Honors Capstone Projects - All

In our global community 20% of the population controls 86% of the gross domestic product and 82% of the world market exports, according to the United Nations Development Program. This thesis explains where this inequality comes from and what can be implemented to help some countries miss out on economic prosperity while others enjoy fiscal bliss. The vast majority of countries with the lowest gross domestic product are non-European countries located in the global south. It is an economic problem for these countries that have been historically oppressed through the exploitation of slavery and colonialism. There has been little done …

A Comparative Look At The Post Cold War Chinese And Us Arms Trade, Conor Byrt May 2010

A Comparative Look At The Post Cold War Chinese And Us Arms Trade, Conor Byrt

Honors Capstone Projects - All

The arms trade involves the international sale or importation of conventional arms. This means the proliferation of any non-nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons. Today the global transfer of arms is a multi-billion dollar a year industry. The US has the world’s largest military expenditure and is known as the world’s greatest proliferator of conventional weapons. China in the past few years has maintained a position as one of the world’s largest importers of arms, and has recently taken the spot as the world’s second largest military expenditure.

Data from watchdog organizations suggests that the world is currently in a period …

Mapu Lahual: Ecotourism And Indigenous Rights In Chile, Danielle Dean May 2010

Mapu Lahual: Ecotourism And Indigenous Rights In Chile, Danielle Dean

Honors Capstone Projects - All

Abstract: This thesis will assess the efforts of international organizations (IGOs) and international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs) to facilitate self-determination and economic independence for the indigenous Mapuches peoples in Chile. My hypothesis is that both IGOs and INGOs to a great extent have helped indigenous peoples gain substantive rights in Chile. When analyzing Chilean progress in indigenous rights, three topic areas were identified. The first considers how the constitutional frameworks support indigenous rights and what rights are guaranteed or hindered due the Chilean 1980 constitution. The second is the economic inclusion and independence of the tribes or communities. Ecotourism projects have …

Man Vs. Machine: Interpreting The Ambiguities In Diplomatic Negotiations, Caitlin Morrison May 2010

Man Vs. Machine: Interpreting The Ambiguities In Diplomatic Negotiations, Caitlin Morrison

Honors Capstone Projects - All

This paper is intended to explore the linguistic causes of ineffectiveness and inefficiency in diplomatic negotiations and determine the best solution. The first sections are designated to explaining the function of international negotiation and typical linguistic problems that hinder effective communication in these situations. After determining that interpretation is the best option for multi-language negotiation, this paper examines the merits of both machine and human interpreters. I argue that human interpreters are more accurate in deciphering ambiguity and working with the intricacies involved in diplomatic discussions. This position is supported by numerous examples, including the current operations of the European …

Zapatismo’S Otra Campaña: Its Efforts For Autonomy And The Construction Of An Anti-Capitalist Social Coalition In Mexico, George J. Williams

Honors Capstone Projects - All

This paper examines the extent to which La Otra Campaña (The Other Campaign) has succeeded in constructing anti-capitalist social coalitions in Mexico. Through a social movement theoretical lens, I analyze the dynamics of three distinct movements within La Otra: (1) the indigenous Zapatistas of Chiapas, (2) the CNUC, a campesino group from Tlaxcala, and (3) the Pancho Villas, an urban housing organization from Mexico City. Based on personal interviews, field notes, and participant observation, this paper compares the tactics and organizing techniques employed by each movement. It explores the ways in which the Zapatista project of “autonomy” has been appropriated …

Diasporas From States In Crisis: A Case Study Of The Zimbabwean Diaspora And Its Role In The Homeland, Leigh Ann Detwiler May 2010

Diasporas From States In Crisis: A Case Study Of The Zimbabwean Diaspora And Its Role In The Homeland, Leigh Ann Detwiler

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Diasporas are important transnational actors with significant potential to influence their homeland. However, when crisis drives migration, certain limitations and opportunities are created, affecting their role in their homeland. The Zimbabwean diaspora provides an interesting case study for a diaspora from a state in crisis since nearly one-quarter of its population lives outside its borders. In a crisis characterized by political oppression, near economic collapse, and a breakdown of social institutions, one of the population's few options for survival has been migration. The diaspora that has resulted has played a political, economic and social role in Zimbabwe, but the crisis …

Civil-Military Relations: A Case Study Of Pakistan, Najiyah Khan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Pakistan is a young and violent nation. It has been under military rule for more than half of its existence and the presence of Islamists in the country has been increasing in recent years. These two actors have played a crucial role in creating the Pakistan of today: a violent, unstable system with revolving governments. What role have civilian governments played while interacting with the Islamists and the ever present military? What has led to the Pakistan we see today? Is there any hope that Pakistan can remove the violent actors within its borders and create real change to become …

The Identity And Integration Of The Quichua-Speaking People Of Highland Ecuador, Marie-Genevieve Sasseville Babecki Apr 2010

The Identity And Integration Of The Quichua-Speaking People Of Highland Ecuador, Marie-Genevieve Sasseville Babecki

Honors Capstone Projects - All

In 1990 a massive pan-indigenous uprising occurred throughoutEcuador. This uprising paralyzed the nation and brought the newly politicized ethnicity of indigenous people as political actors to national attention. This led to an increasingly contentious struggle for power, related to the historical verticality of classes based upon ethnicity. But why did ethnicity now become politicized in such an explosive manner and how is this politicized identity formed?

Examining historical context, we trace the evolution of state discourse which greatly shapes identity from one of separation and segregation of indigenous peoples and Hispanic elites, to greater inclusion of all populations as citizens. …
