The Nonuse Of Figurative Language In Conduct Disordered Adolescents, Mike Berger

The relationship between the literal language and conduct problems among conduct disordered adolescents was examined in 109 subjects. The inability to use figurative language was found to be positively related to ratings of conduct problems. Both the parents' discipline style and nonuse of figurative language were related to conduct problems in conduct disordered adolescents. The possible role of other variables, for example, age, sex, and IQ, was examined. Possible mechanisms that could relate the lack of figurative competence and conduct problems were explored.

The Impact Of Sports Participation On Adolescent Eating Disorders, Joyce Barker

In an effort to assess the impact of sports participation on adolescent eating disorders, information was obtained from 58 high school females. Of this sample, 20 students were athletes (soccer, track, and gymnasts), 7 students were performance squad members (e.g., cheerleaders), and 31 students were not engaged in these activities. A measure of adolescent eating disorder, the Eating Disorder Inventory Il (EDI-2), and a demographic survey, were administered to all participants. Although sports and performance squads emphasized body shape and control, involvement in these organized physical activity contexts did not differentiate adolescents most at risk.

The Effects Of Initiation And Mentoring Of Adolescent Boys, Clayton J. Lessor

The effect of initiation and mentoring on adolescent boys was examined. Behavioral scales and personality types were compared. Twenty males, ages 12-17 from the Pacific Coast, formed the subject group. Adolescent males were obtained from a non-random sample in the Pacific Coast region. The subjects were given the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and the parent(s) of the participants were given the Behavioral Evaluation Scale. Both were administered before and after an initiation and mentoring weekend retreat. The parents were given a demographic survey to complete. Despite conceptual support linking ethnic identity and psychological adjustment among Native Americans, empirical research examining this relationship remains limited. In light of recent developments in the area of ethnic identity research, including alternative conceptual models, improved methodologies, and more sophisticated measures, this study examined the relationship between ethnic identity, self-esteem, emotional well-being, and depression among Native American reservation youth.

The relationship between the predictor variables of American Indian ethnic identity, White-American identity and bicultural identity, and the criterion measures of self-esteem, emotional well-being, and depression were examined for 137 Lakota/Dakota Sioux reservation youth.
