A Study Of The Role Of The United Nations And The United States In The Lebanon Crisis Of 1958., Lawerence Brisker

Political Science ETDs

This paper is concerned with the Lebanese Crisis of 1958 as a case study dealing with the interaction of the United States’ action and the United Nations actions, and with the effect of United Nations membership upon United States foreign policy making. This paper does not pretend to give a detailed descriptive account of the crisis in its entirety. Instead, I have placed emphasis upon those factors in the Middle East that had an effect upon American policy-making, and upon action taken respectively by the United States and the United Nations during the crisis. However, before we become involved in …

The Role Of Stimulus Similarity In In [Sic] Children's Preferences For Novelty, Larry Fenson Sep 1965

The Role Of Stimulus Similarity In In [Sic] Children's Preferences For Novelty, Larry Fenson

Psychology ETDs

Berlyne (1960) has recently suggested that the degree of “novelty” possessed by a given stimulus is inversely related to three factors: (a) how often patterns that are similar enough to be relevant have been experienced before; (b) how similar they have been; and (c) how recently they have been experienced. Stated more simply, Berlyne is referring to the frequency, similarity, and recency of any stimulus.

The Relationship Of Instructions During Labor And Relaxation, Frances Josephine Hume Lopez Sep 1965

The Relationship Of Instructions During Labor And Relaxation, Frances Josephine Hume Lopez

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A causal-comparative study was done in a county hospital using twenty subjects to determine if the ''unprepared" primigravida patient in active labor will experience less pain if given instructions to aid relaxation. It was hypothesized that the "unprepared" primigravida patients receiving continuous nurse attendance plus instructions to aid relaxation by (1) breathing techniques, and (2) body positions would show less evidences of pain, tension and anxiety during the first and second stages of labor than the group of patients which received only the continuous nurse attendance.

Two devices, (1) a structured observation, (2) a questionnaire with fixed-alternative questions, were used …

The Effects Of Age At The Beginning Of Reading Instruction On Reading Achievement, Phyllis G. Wacker Aug 1965

The Effects Of Age At The Beginning Of Reading Instruction On Reading Achievement, Phyllis G. Wacker

Master's Theses

Hunt (1961) found that in lower socio-economio groups training provided by the child' s natural environment was often too haphazard for the efficient development of ideas of which he is capable. Limited experiences, or few "learning sets" may be the cause of lack of achievement. These questions led the experimenter, a year later, to undertake a study of these children after each had had two years of formal, in school, reading instruct ion, and to test the following hypotheses:

1. Four groups of children who had entered school at the same time, but at four different ages, would differ significantly …

The Mmpi As A Predictor Of Success Among Seminary Students, Sue Webb Cardwell

Graduate Thesis Collection

Purpose of the study. Since the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory is the psychological test that is most widely used in seminaries in the United States, it was the purpose of this study (1) to establish norms for Christian Theological Seminary that could be compared with general norms and with the norms of two other studies, those of United Presbyterian and Southern California School of Theology seminarians, to help answer the question of how clergymen differ from non-clergymen and whether special norms need to be taken into consideration in the interpretation of MMPI protocols with seminary students; and (2) to see …

Morbidity, Growth And Development Of Prematurely-Born Twins In Early Childhood, Lynelle King

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was concerned with the problem of determining the effect of twinship on the prematurely-born twin's growth and physical and emotional morbidity during early childhood. The immediate purposes of the study were to compare prematurely-born twins with prematurely-born singletons regarding their incidence and types of physical and emotional morbidity, and their growth during early childhood. It was hypothesized that prematurely-born twins have slower growth and more physical and emotional morbidity than prematurely born singletons. The descriptive survey method was used. From children cared for at a selected premature clinic, nineteen twins were matched with nineteen singletons for: race, sex, …

Manipulation Of The Magnitude Of Incentive Variable And Runway Performance, David Mason Wildasin Aug 1965

Manipulation Of The Magnitude Of Incentive Variable And Runway Performance, David Mason Wildasin

Masters Theses

The purpose of the present study was an attempt to replicate the findings of Wolfe and Kaplon (1941) using rats and somewhat more precise measurements of the dependent variables. Both the former study and Dyal's work indicate that specification of the amount of reward in terms of the weight of the food is insufficient. Specifically, the effect of presenting the same amount of food in one unit as against presenting it in five units was investigated.

American Involvement And Policy During The Suez Crisis - 1956, Thomas M. Riley

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

"The Suez Canal has been a blessing and a curse. Perhaps since the digging of the Canal began in 1859 and after its completion in 1869, it has been subjected to more controversies than any other construction project in history".1

The Suez Canal, in Egyptian territory between the Arabian Desert and the Siani peninsula, is an artificial waterway 103 miles long, between Port Said on the Mediterranean and Suez on the Red Sea. "Crossing the isthmus between Asia and Africa, the Canal's geographic location has made its strategic value in international affairs greater than that of any other maritime …

U.S. Foreign Aid Policy: Its Impact On Public Opinion, Jane L. Olson

Masters Theses

Introduction

An analysis of the relationships between public policy and public opinion is vital to gaining an understanding and appreciation of the political process in the United States. According to democratic theory, citizens are to be free to express their views on issues and policy decisions. In a representative democracy the elected officials are supposed to carry out the wishes of their constituents. This study is directed toward analyzing the relationships between foreign aid policy and public opinion toward ten selected policy changes which have taken place since World War II. It focuses on the formal foreign aid program; and, …

Father Charles E. Coughlin And The Formation Of The Union Party 1936, Michael H. Parsons

Masters Theses

Preface

On October 17, 1926, a young Irish-Catholic priest stood before the altar of his church in Royal Oak, Michigan and delivered a radio sermon. Within a decade, his voice, transmitted by thousands of radios, would be familiar to millions of Americans. Father Charles E. Coughlin had begun a stormy career that would earn him the title "radio priest" and make him one of the most controversial figures to appear on the American political scene in the depression-ridden 1930's.

...

In this study, I trace the development of Coughlin's disillusionment with the Roosevelt administration, analyze his contribution to the formation …

The Private Session In Michigan Council-Manager City Government, Dale H. Poel Jul 1965

The Private Session In Michigan Council-Manager City Government, Dale H. Poel

Masters Theses

Introduction

Norton Long has stated that "...under the deceptive uniformity of an apparently similar legal structure, a wide range of actual variance appears in the 'constitutions' of our local government."1 The concern of this study is one part of that wide range of variance: the private and/or informal sessions held by councils in Michigan council-manager cities. These sessions are part of that variance which, if not understood, must lead to tentativeness and uncertainty in generalizations on the local government process. They would include any meetings of the council and manager other than the formal public meeting. Instances in which …

An Exploratory Study Of Deferred Gratification Patterns Of Junior High School And Senior High School Drop-Outs And Part-Time Attenders, Charles T. Woods

Masters Theses

Introduction

The concept of Deferred Gratification refers to the practice of postponing immediate satisfactions so that future goals may be gained. Today's activities are view-example, renouncing emotional impulses will permit eventual emotional satisfaction. Education is viewed as an investment in the future prospects. Saving money is done for future satisfactions. Putting off marriage until one has a good job is perceived as the means to greater mobility.

The utility of Deferred Gratification Patterns (DGP) is in its relationship to social class and social mobility. This is seen in that some realize that social mobility, upward or downward, is a probability …

An Exploratory Investigation Of The Indifferent Pattern Of Accommodation To Work-Related Organizations, John E. Blissick Jul 1965

An Exploratory Investigation Of The Indifferent Pattern Of Accommodation To Work-Related Organizations, John E. Blissick

Masters Theses

Introduction

In recent years there has been growing interest in the nature of workers' attitudes, values, and behavior.1 One area of special concern has been a particular behavior pattern frequently observed among blue collar workers called indifference, and it generally refers to a lack of identification with one's work and work organization. Indifference is a phenomenon which occurs among almost all major groups of workers to some degree, but it has been observed most often and in its most intense forms among blue collar workers. In various forms it has been called apathy, noninvolvement, and un-affectedness. It has been …

The Process Of Professionalization: A Comparative Analysis Of Clinical Psychology And Psychiatry, William E. Arens Jun 1965

The Process Of Professionalization: A Comparative Analysis Of Clinical Psychology And Psychiatry, William E. Arens

Sociology ETDs

As a number of observers concerned with the sociology of work have pointed out, there has been a general tendency among occupational groups to strive for professional status. Historically this social phenomenon can be traced to medieval Western Europe with the rise of church sponsored universities providing training primarily in theology, but also focusing on the study of medicine and law. So long as the church maintained its predominance, the various fields for which the universities trained did not become clearly distinct. However, with the decline of the church's power in the 16th century, and as the culture of that …

The Effects Of Physostigmine Sulfate On Inferential Learning In The Rat, Stephen Frederic Johnsen Jun 1965

The Effects Of Physostigmine Sulfate On Inferential Learning In The Rat, Stephen Frederic Johnsen

Student Work

The following study has arisen out of an interest in the recent work done on the chemistry of neural transmission. Since experimentation has indicated that certain chemicals affect some lower level learning performance of animals such as maze performance, this experiment is an attempt to find out whether the same effects hold for such a chemical on higher order learning processes, as indicated by Maier's three-table-test.

The Behavioral Effects Of Partial Reinforcement As A Function Of The Stimulus Similarity Of The Intertrial Interval, Dennis L. Mclaughlin Jun 1965

The Behavioral Effects Of Partial Reinforcement As A Function Of The Stimulus Similarity Of The Intertrial Interval, Dennis L. Mclaughlin

Master's Theses

Although Pavlov (1927) and Skinner (1938) had published articles dealing with the effects of less than 100% reinforcement upon acquisition and extinction, it was not until the Humphrey's investigation (1939) that partial reinforcement became an enigma for leaning theorists. Hull's theory came under the sharpest criticism because with a decrease in the number of reinforcement in acquisition there was not a corresponding decrease in habit strength as measured by resistance to extinction. Despite much criticism, Hull did not deet it necessary to consider the problem of partial reinforcement in his Principles of Behavior (1943). Humphreys, on the other hand, proposed …
