The English Crown's Foreign Debt, 1544-1557, Wayne M. Kline

Dissertations and Theses

As background to an investigation of the crown's foreign borrowing from 1544 though 1557, this thesis examines the general fiscal situation of the mid-Tudor Commonwealth with special emphasis on the great inflation of the 16th century, the role of Antwerp in European finance, and the relationship between war and English fiscal policy. It then examines in detail the creation of the debt under Henry VIII, its development into a standard feature of state finance under Edward VI, and its liquidation under Mary. Information on England and English crown finance was drawn principally from published primary sources while information on the …

Measurement Of The Economic Effects Of Trade Liberalization Policy In Taiwan, Shu-Lan Huang May 1992

Measurement Of The Economic Effects Of Trade Liberalization Policy In Taiwan, Shu-Lan Huang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the conclusion of World War II, Taiwan, the Republic of China (ROC), has developed into an industrialized country following a long period of severe inflation. Taiwan has produced a successful example of economic development through export expansion. Exports and imports of Taiwan increased from approximately 10 percent of the gross national product (GNP) in the 1950s to more than 45 percent in the 1980s. The role of Taiwan's foreign exchange rates and traderelated policies on exports and imports was examined in this study.

Trade-related policies implemented by the government of ROC were documented from 1950 to 1980 by categorizing …

Economic Comparison Of Selected Processing Alternatives For Alfalfa, Dan J. Bates May 1992

Economic Comparison Of Selected Processing Alternatives For Alfalfa, Dan J. Bates

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Processing alfalfa for export is of significant interest to areas like Millard County, the largest hay-producing county in Utah. In the past year there have been significant reductions in the price of hay as a result of increased supplies in the central and western United States. This thesis analyzes the benefits and costs of processing alfalfa into cubes and recompressed bales in order to enter the export market.

Costs of production were estimated through the use of enterprise budgets first for the farmer to establish the costs and returns for raising the hay, and secondly for cubing and recompressing the …

Economic Analysis Of Dryland Wheat Tillage Practices In Box Elder County, Utah, Michael Dale Bond May 1992

Economic Analysis Of Dryland Wheat Tillage Practices In Box Elder County, Utah, Michael Dale Bond

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to determine the economic viability of various dryland wheat tillage systems, many of which were developed from years of cooperative research efforts.

In the study three conventional tillage methods were analyzed along with ten conservation tillage practices. The study farm consisted of 2000 acres, of which 1000 acres are classified as land 1 and its wheat yield is assumed to be 35 bushels per acre for non-continuous tillage methods and 23 bushels per acre for continuous tillage methods. The remaining 1000 acres are classed as land 2 and its assumed wheat yield is 30 …

Factors That Explain Changes In The Level Of Human Capital Of Children With Disabilities, Linda D. Goetze May 1992

Factors That Explain Changes In The Level Of Human Capital Of Children With Disabilities, Linda D. Goetze

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation combines concepts from the human capital and early intervention literature to develop a theoretical and empirical model of child development relationships. This model is empirically estimated using data from the Early Intervention Research Institute's Longitudinal Study on the effects of intervention for young children with disabilities. The model is estimated using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) relating the Battelle Developmental Inventory (BDI) scores to child, family, and early intervention variables. These relationships are also examined using a type of Sequential Method of Moments (SMM) estimation strategy that accounts for data and other problems such as endogeneity, censoring, and selectivity. …

Preference Reversal And The Independence Axiom, Dan Adelman Jan 1992

Preference Reversal And The Independence Axiom, Dan Adelman

Honors Papers

In his article "Dynamic Consistency and Non-Expected Utility Models of Choice Under Uncertainty," (Journal of Economic Literature, Dec. 1989), Mark Machina asserted that preference reversal (PR) is caused by a violation of the independence axiom. Amos Tversky, Paul Slovic, and Daniel Kahneman submit, however, that "Observed preference reversal ... cannot be adequately explained by violations of independence...." This paper tests these claims by breaking the independence axiom into its two component parts: mixture and replacement separability.

Ricardian Equivalence Or The Indifference Between Tax And Debt Financing, Chad Moutray Jan 1992

Ricardian Equivalence Or The Indifference Between Tax And Debt Financing, Chad Moutray

Masters Theses

Ricardian equivalence is a topic which has attracted much attention in the economic journals in the past couple of decades. Economic theory states that a tax cut gives the public a greater disposable income. Thus, the public will consume more, and the economy will grow. However, if the tax cut is financed by debt, the public will perceive that a future tax increase is inevitable to pay off the debt. Under this scenario, the public will not consume more. Instead, they will save all of their increased disposable income in anticipation of the future tax increase. Ricardian equivalence then is …

Non-Monetary Effects On Inflation Within The Price-Gap Model, Leonard Loebach Jan 1992

Non-Monetary Effects On Inflation Within The Price-Gap Model, Leonard Loebach

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine some of the various non-monetary effects on inflation within the framework of the price-gap model. Some of the non-monetary shocks that can affect inflation include wage adjustments, changes in basic commodity prices (for example, crude oil), changes in the exchange rates, and shifts in inflationary expectations.

In April of 1989, a study was put out by the Federal Reserve (staff study 157) that examined the relationship between the current price level and an estimate of the long-run equilibrium price level. In the study, an indicator P* (pronounced P-star) was used to estimate …

Market Efficiency Test Of Australian Options Market Using Put Call Parity Analysis, Eng Kiang Peter Lee Jan 1992

Market Efficiency Test Of Australian Options Market Using Put Call Parity Analysis, Eng Kiang Peter Lee

Theses : Honours

The aims of this thesis is twofold. The primary objective is to test the market efficiency of Australian Options Marlcet (AOM) using the put call parity model. In addition, empirical evidence on the put call parity model is also gather. The put call parity model specified a deterministic relation between the prices of calls and puts. In particular, the put call parity model specifies an upper and lower boundary conditions. A breach in the put call parity model result in arbitrage opportunities which is inconsistent with a efficient market. Four companies share options traded in AOM over a six month …
