This session was intended to assist researchers with contextualizing research and research publications through the use of bibliometrics. Assessment of student learning has been a component of this instruction team’s workload, but the approach was narrow, and responsibility was not equally shared. The instruction assessment efforts were based on quiz results from online tutorials administered by certain team members. When the tutorial quiz scores remained consistent over time, the responsible librarians decided that it was no longer useful to conduct an annual tutorial assessment. With the support of the library assessment committee chair, instruction team members were asked to try their hands at assessment using techniques of their own choosing with a class that they selected. Weeding books is a scary prospect for many librarians and faculty, particularly for humanities faculty, since monographs are critical scholarship in those disciplines. At this library, a renovation in one area created the need for a large-scale review of monograph collections in other areas. Library leadership began conversations with campus stakeholders early on, emphasizing renovation needs and outcomes, careful deselection methods, stakeholder opportunities for input, and sustainable collections. In the Fall 2017 semester, all subject librarians began identifying relevant titles for deselection and communicating with departments about the process. Effective collaboration between archivists and technical services librarians can increase the discoverability of special collection materials. In this panel presentation, archivists and a technical services librarian from a medium-sized institution discussed archival tools available to preserve collections of digital content and how to make the collections available universitywide.

Working together, the panelists had created a plan to integrate these collections into the discovery layer so that metadata was indexed on a single user-friendly platform. After advertising the collections, they collected usage statistics to determine impact.

Archival and Primary Source Research (UDI 204) is a one-credit course at the University of Dayton designed to introduce students to the themes of historical empathy, visual literacy, privacy, and silences in the archives. This case study explores the pilot iteration of this mini-course, taught collaboratively with a team of six librarians and archivists. Over the course of 2,000 years, theologians have accreted mountains of writings on every aspect of the Christian faith. While even devoted students of Christian doctrine likely will not have time to scale all of the peaks in a single academic lifetime, they cannot afford to skip completely over one of the highest summits: the documents of the “teaching arm” of the Catholic Church, the Magisterium, which safeguards the deposit of faith and interprets controversies in light of it. Instructional librarians at the University of Dayton collaborated with a religious studies graduate program to offer a three-day information literacy workshop, or “boot camp,” to the program's graduate research assistants. The graduate program had found that the assistants' research skills did not meet the expectations of their faculty mentors, and the workshop sought to address these deficiencies. With input from the religious studies faculty, the workshop focused on catalog and database searching, Boolean logic, primary sources, and the Chicago citation style. The librarians incorporated active learning exercises into each workshop session. Assessment of the workshop suggested that the assistants gained …

The teachings of the Catholic Church are found in numerous documents, produced by different persons or groups across centuries, whose arrangement and importance relative to each other are often hard to understand. This Listen and Learn session familiarizes librarians from non-Catholic backgrounds with the various types and features of Catholic Church document, concluding with strategies for answering a sample reference question by relying on that material. Six librarians and archivists at the University of Dayton taught an archives “mini-course” to introduce students to archival theory and concepts while providing them with a deeper understanding of the history of the university and the city of Dayton. The one-credit class covered concepts including visual literacy, representation in the archives, privacy, and historical empathy. Students researched an archival collection from UD’s special collections, placing the collection within its historical context. They submitted a final project consisting of a poster presentation of their research, a bibliography, and a reflection.

In this session, attendees engaged with the exciting process and partnership developed between co-presenters from University of Dayton (UD) Libraries and UD’s Institute of Applied Creativity for Transformation (IACT). An IACT experiential learning program led 12 students to research and reimagine the role of the library, which resulted in Concourse D, a prototyped transdisciplinary project development studio. This mutually beneficial process led to the Libraries to a user-centric mindset to reimagine space as service; patrons as creators; and a new space-sharing collaboration to further leverage an upcoming renovation. Presenters discussed lessons learned and future iterations of the studio.

E-resources are constantly in flux, and librarians spend a significant amount of time fixing access issues. Effective communication and issue tracking are important components that increase transparency, reduce redundancy, and provide a knowledge base. In 2012, the Association for College and Research Libraries issued a document outlining eleven diversity standards for academic libraries to use in developing the skills and competencies that are necessary to serve diverse populations. The American Library Association lists “diversity” as one of its 11 core values.

In 2016, the Medical Library Association identified diversity and inclusion as essential values for the association, and in 2017, it appointed a Diversity Task Force to determine how to operationalize these values.
