Kentucky Negro Education Association (Nkea) Journal: Accounting Of Librarians And Libraries, Reinette F. Jones
Kentucky Negro Education Association (Nkea) Journal: Accounting Of Librarians And Libraries, Reinette F. Jones
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
The Librarians Conference was the 15th division to be established under the Kentucky Negro Education Association (KNEA). It was the first formal organization of Kentucky Negro librarians. Annual proceedings of all conferences and departments were published in the KNEA Journal. Around 1960 KNEA and its journal became defunct. To date, the KNEA Journal seems to be the only source that gives an accounting of the Librarians Conference activity. The most complete holding of the Journal is available at the Kentucky State University Blazer Library Archives. Microfilm copies of issues are also available at the New York Public Library.

Psychic Unity Constraints Upon Successful Intercultural Communication, James M. Donovan, Brian A. Rundle
Psychic Unity Constraints Upon Successful Intercultural Communication, James M. Donovan, Brian A. Rundle
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This article begins with the unchallenged assertion that intercultural communication episodes are necessarily imperfect. The disciplinary corpus reflects the correct assumption that much of this failure is attributable to the lock of various competencies on the part of the communicants. Experts become vague, however, where the line should be drawn, if at all, beyond which increased competency will not yield improved communication.
The principle of psychic unity assures us that there will be some experiences (not many, but some) which are so far removed from the ordinary processes of categorization and conceptualization that the raw data cannot be encapsulated faithfully …

The Early Kinship: Kentucky Negro Public Education, Libraries, And Librarians, Reinette F. Jones
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
In the final decades of the nineteenth century libraries were a very miniscule part of the initial drive toward education for Kentucky's former slaves. Thirty-one years after public education became available, Thomas Fountain Blue began training Negro librarians at the Louisville Free Public Library Western Colored Branch. Another 30 years would pass before Negro librarians would be recognized by the Kentucky Negro Education Association in 1935. Unfortunately, by 1935 Blue's training program had ended and there were no institutions in Kentucky offering library training to Negroes.

Neuroprotective Action Of Cycloheximide Involves Induction Of Bcl-2 And Antioxidant Pathways, Katsutoshi Furukawa, Steven Estus, Weiming Fu, Robert J. Mark, Mark P. Mattson
Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
The ability of the protein synthesis inhibitor cycloheximide (CHX) to prevent neuronal death in different paradigms has been interpreted to indicate that the cell death process requires synthesis of “killer” proteins. On the other hand, data indicate that neurotrophic factors protect neurons in the same death paradigms by inducing expression of neuroprotective gene products. We now provide evidence that in embryonic rat hippocampal cell cultures, CHX protects neurons against oxidative insults by a mechanism involving induction of neuroprotective gene products including the antiapoptotic gene bcl-2 and antioxidant enzymes. Neuronal survival after exposure to glutamate, FeSO4, and amyloid β-peptide …

The Agriculture Library at the University of Kentucky has offered library instruction in some form for the past 23 years. The program began in 1974 with the Library Literacy program that offered on demand workshops, an undergraduate for-credit course, graduate workshops and programs to extension personnel. By 1988 the program had moved into a library literacy program that was proactive, provided individualized presentations, and provided a mix of electronic and paper sources. This program gave way to the information literacy program of 1994 which expanded target groups and collaborated with other areas. A shift in the teaching emphasis in the …
Declarative Derivation: A Network Morphology Account Of Russian Word Formation With Reference To Nouns Denoting 'Person'., Andrew R. Hippisley
Declarative Derivation: A Network Morphology Account Of Russian Word Formation With Reference To Nouns Denoting 'Person'., Andrew R. Hippisley
Linguistics Faculty Publications
Studies on derivational morphology often assume a procedural view, emphasizing the journey from morphologically simple to morphologically complex word. We present a declarative approach with the focus on the relationship between two morphologically connected words. This more static approach enables us to better locate the generalizations present in a derivational system. We test this approach on a specific body of data, namely the formation of nouns denoting ‘person’ in Russian.
After introducing Network Morphology, the declarative framework within which we base our account, and the Russian data we will be investigating, we provide as theoretical background to our proposed analysis …

Toward A Model Relating Empathy, Charisma, And Telepathy, James M. Donovan
Toward A Model Relating Empathy, Charisma, And Telepathy, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Telepathy is often dismissed because it is judged to be so weird as to be counterintuitive. This article argues that telepathy may be interpreted as phenomenologically impressive events of a social psychological process which in less dramatic instances would be termed empathy and charisma. Such an equation, however, herein called the "possible world model," would perhaps normalize telepathy, and lessen the opprobrium attached to its study. A first step is taken to validate the model when a comparative literature search finds that telepathy and empathy relate very similarly to other experimental variables.
