• Explore ways to teach lateral reading to students in your educational context.

Audience: All educators, including K-12 teachers, public librarians, academic librarians, educational administrators and community organizers)

Both everyday life experience and a growing body of research show just how hard it is to determine the credibility of online sources. Traditional checklist approaches to evaluating websites (e.g., the CRAAP test) are ineffective, despite their continued prevalence. The ways in which a technology is invented, owned, and approved are strongly influenced by the same oppressive and exclusionary structures that critical librarianship interrogates. Patents, limited-term grants of rights to inventions, are issued to inventors in exchange for detailed specifications of the invention. This paper examines current practices used by business librarians in teaching students how to find patents and how these practices could be critically informed given the nature of the United States patent system as it exists today. An output of this work is a suggested lesson plan with recommended resources.

Instructional medical librarians are uniquely positioned in a context governed by multiple instructional frameworks emerging from librarianship and the professions with which they liaise. Yet very little literature exists on medical librarians’ use of curriculum mapping to align their instruction with these frameworks. This essay explores the tension between pursuing meaningful work in instruction librarianship and the realities of working in a society in which many jobs provide little fulfillment or pleasure, or, as the journalist Sarah Jaffe puts it, “Work won’t love you back.” Drawing on a recent conference keynote by Anne Helen Petersen, C. Wright Mills’s conception of sociological imagination, and an ecological model of teacher agency, I propose that one way librarians can sustain their teaching practices and preserve their well-being is by actively investigating how social structures and relationships influence their teaching roles.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to discover and synthesize the concepts and contents of the literature published in health sciences education journals investigating the experiences of LGBTQIA+ health sciences students. Methods: Literature searches were performed in Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and ERIC databases based on an established PubMed search strategy and adapted for each database. Results were limited to the contents of a selection of health sciences education journals. Studies were required to focus on the experiences of health sciences students identifying as LGBTQIA+ and their perceptions of these experiences. Results: Searches yielded 695 citations. The Ische Library started to offer the service in Fall of 2019. It did not take long for word of the service to get out, and during the first few months, the library handled a respectable volume of requests. In 2020, COVID-19 struck and almost all poster printing halted. Throughout the remainder of 2020, and the whole of 2021, the cancellation of conferences, and students attending remotely ensured that we did not have any external posters to print. Objective: To build a database of campus art to help preserve campus history and to create a record of where items are currently located (or when they were last seen). Methods: Using our campus’s instance of BePress Institutional Repository, I built an online collection of images of artwork housed on campus, mostly portraits of historical faculty members. This article will discuss the importance of acknowledging the information practices of subcultural groups within library instruction and fostering an inclusive learning environment with the implementation of a workshop by comparing research databases with the popular fanfiction website, Archive of Our Own. By incorporating AO3 into library instruction, students’ interests and prior experiences were engaged by utilizing the principles of subcultural capital.
