Persistence In Japanese Language Study And Learners’ Cultural/Linguistics Backgrounds, Masanori Matsumoto

Motivational characteristics of students learning Japanese as a foreign language at universities in Australia were investigated to find out what affecting factors are closely related to their intentions for continuing/discontinuing their study. The results showed that students’ cultural/linguistic backgrounds have a significant impact on their performance in learning the language, and sustaining motivation, which is closely related to their interest in aspects of Japanese culture, is an important determinant for persistence in their study. Developing intrinsic cultural interest is an important factor for sustaining motivation, which is more likely to occur when learners have distant cultural/linguistic backgrounds from Japanese. Recently the Boise State University English Department and Albertsons Library collaborated on digitizing a collection of out-of-print editions of the Western Writers Series. Boise State publishes the Western Writers Series which consists of 50-60 page booklets of authoritative introductions to writers and classic texts that relate to literature of the American West. This poster will showcase the collaboration and motivation that went into the Western Writers Series Digital Editions. The motivation behind each stakeholder’s participation in this project will be outlined. A Response To Bruni And Sugden, Julie A. Nelson

An article by Luigino Bruni and Robert Sugden published in this journal argues that market relations contain elements of what they call ‘fraternity’. This Response demonstrates that my own views on interpersonal relations and markets – which originated in the feminist analysis of caring labour – are far closer to Bruni and Sugden's than they acknowledge in their article, and goes on to discuss additional important dimensions of sociality that they neglect.
