Diablo Canyon Archaeology: Prehistoric Hunting Along California Coast, Terry L. Jones
Diablo Canyon Archaeology: Prehistoric Hunting Along California Coast, Terry L. Jones
Terry L. Jones
Anthropologist Terry Jones of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has evidence suggesting prehistoric human hunters drove a flightless duck to extinction about 4,000 years ago. His theory is based on a 10,000-year history of shell and bone refuse, and other remnants of human settlement, excavated in the 1960s during the construction of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in San Luis Obispo County. The refuse is part of what archeologists call a “kitchen midden”–a trash heap showing what people hunted and ate. The Chumash Indians are among the modern descendants of the coastal dwellers represented at the site.

Ethnic Nationalism And Adaptation In Cyprus, Neophytos Loizides
Neophytos Loizides
Ethnic Nationalism and Adaptation in Cyprus NEOPHYTOS G. LOIZIDES Queen’s University Belfast Both ethnic communities in Cyprus have maintained strong political and cultural ties with Greece and Turkey, respectively, and at some point of their twentieth century history, each has aspired to become part of either the former or the latter. Yet the way this relationship has been imagined has differed across time, space, and class. Both communities have adapted their identities to prevailing ideological waves as well as political opportunities, domestic alliances, and interests. The article evaluates different responses to ethnic nationalism, highlighting important intra-ethnic differentiations within each Cypriot …
Diablo Canyon Archaeology: Trans-Holocene Faunal Exploitation Along The Central California Coast, Terry L. Jones
Diablo Canyon Archaeology: Trans-Holocene Faunal Exploitation Along The Central California Coast, Terry L. Jones
Terry L. Jones
The objectives of the Diablo Canyon Archaeology project were to (1) refine the dating of archaeological sites CA-SLO-2 and CA-SLO-585; (2) identify the mammal, bird, and fish bones from these sites; (3) employ the resulting temporally controlled faunal matrix to improve understanding of California’s earliest coastal inhabitants and (4) address issues of nearshore ecology related to prehistoric human predation on sea otters and abalone as represented in the faunal record. The project was supposed to result in a published peer-reviewed paper and possible participation in a symposium on restoration ecology.

Law Enforcement Responses To Trafficking In Persons: Challenges And Emerging Good Practice, Fiona M. David Ms

In recent years, the Australian Government has committed significant resources to combating trafficking in persons. Within this larger anti-trafficking effort, the community sector, law enforcement, prosecutors, health professionals and members of the community all have an important role to play. As each sector comes to terms with the reality of trafficking in Australia, it is important that emerging challenges and possible solutions are identified. This paper focuses on the challenges that may confront law enforcement officials in any country in their efforts to detect trafficking, identify victims, investigate offences and contribute to the successful prosecution of offenders. Drawing on international …
Flag Waving As Visual Argument: 2006 Immigration Demonstrations And Cultural Citizenship, Richard D. Pineda
Flag Waving As Visual Argument: 2006 Immigration Demonstrations And Cultural Citizenship, Richard D. Pineda
Richard D. Pineda
During the 2006 immigration rallies and demonstrations, hundreds of thousands of immigrants and their supporters tumed out to protest proposed immigration legislation. Flag waving was a key element of these demonstrations, in which participants employed both the U.S. flag and other national flags, most prominently Mexican flags. In this essay, we examine how flag waving functions as a visual argument that offers possibilities for establishing cultural and national citizenship and creating a visual form of refutation. Specifically, we argue that anti-immigration advocates see foreign flags as visual ideographs that represent recent immigrants' failure to assimilate, immigrants' deviant cultural practices, and …

Organizing Geographic Information: The Creation Of The National Spatial Data Infrastructure, Bradley Wade Bishop
Bradley Wade Bishop
Prior to government regulations issued in OMB Circular A-16 in 1990, the organization and dissemination of geospatial data collected by the United State’s governments were unregulated and informal. Circular A-16 called for the creation of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) and charged the FGDC with creating and implementing metadata standards for geospatial data. The importance of geospatial interoperability and metadata standardization between agencies was amplified in 1994 with EO 12906. EO 12906 called for the creation of a National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). A Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) is the coordination of the creation, collection, dissemination, and storage of …
Collaboration: Critical Success Factors For Student Learning, Ken Haycock
Collaboration: Critical Success Factors For Student Learning, Ken Haycock
Ken Haycock
Several studies identify collaboration between classroom teachers and teacher-librarians as a key factor that affects student achievement. Studies in teacher-librarianship have established procedures and processes for effective collaboration. This study examines collaboration from a broader theoretical and research perspective, beginning with 20 factors that specifically influence successful collaborations. These are clustered in six areas: factors related to the environment, to membership characteristics, to process and structure, to communication, to purpose, and to resources. Research from teacher-librarianship is then applied to substantiate and reinforce the factors and provide context for successful collaboration and thus effect on students' learning in schools. Disaster Management In The United States: Examining Key Political And Policy Challenges, Brian Gerber
Brian J. Gerber
The failures associated with the Hurricane Katrina response call attention to the challenges of, and the need to better understand disaster management practices in the United States. This article reviews several recent contributions to the field of disaster research and considers four key issues: the concept of disaster vulnerability, how individuals respond to hazard risks, challenges associated with effective hazard mitigation, and the idea of policy learning in the area of disasters. Beyond a review of these aspects of disaster management, future directions in disaster research is discussed.

“Utilization And Cost Of Mental Health, Substance Abuse, And Medical Services Among At-Risk Drinkers, Michael T. French, Paul J. Nieter, Joann E. Kirchne, Brenda M. Booth
Michael T. French
The objective of this research was to examine whether users of mental health or substance abuse (MH/SA) services incurred greater costs for non-MH/SA services than nonusers of MH/SA services. Two years of health care utilization data were collected on 443 at-risk drinkers from six southern U.S. states. We then examined predictors of using MH/SA services and costs associated with non-MH/SA services. The results showed that use of MH/SA services was associated with female gender, military service, health insurance, and not being employed full-time. Unadjusted analyses indicated that non-MH/SA service costs were significantly higher among MH/SA service users than nonusers. However, …

A House Of Many Rooms: Healing Practice And The Ontology Of Health In Hmong Tradition And The Diaspora, Sam Grey
Sam Grey
Culture – the foundation of views about health and healing – is subject to modification, translation, and adaptation as it grapples with changes in its geographic, economic, and socio-political context. For the Hmong, an Indigenous people with a millennia-long history of regional and international migration, it can be said that their cultural context has been change itself. Given the empiricist certainty that Indigenous medical systems will invariably yield to modern education and the increased availability of biomedical services, the perpetuation of various traditional elements in the medical culture of the Hmong is nothing short of remarkable. As minorities in a …
