Shorthand, Syntactic Ellipsis, And The Pragmatic Determinants Of What Is Said, Reinaldo Elugardo, Robert J. Stainton

Our first aim in this paper is to respond to four novel objections in Jason Stanley's 'Context and Logical Form'. Taken together, those objections attempt to debunk our prior claims that one can perform a genuine speech act by using a sub‐sentential expression—where by 'sub‐sentential expression' we mean an ordinary word or phrase, not embedded in any larger syntactic structure. Our second aim is to make it plausible that, pace Stanley, there really are pragmatic determinants of the literal truth‐conditional content of speech acts. We hope to achieve this second aim precisely by defending the genuineness of sub‐sentential speech acts. …

Responses To Indirect Speech Acts In A Chat Room, Elizabeth C. Scheyder
Responses To Indirect Speech Acts In A Chat Room, Elizabeth C. Scheyder
Elizabeth C Scheyder
This study compares one aspect of computer-mediated communication (CMC) to oral communication by examining the types of responses that are given to indirect speech acts in a chat room versus the types of responses that are given in a telephone conversation. In this case, the chat room functions as a recitation meeting for an undergraduate course and the telephone conversations are taken from a study done by Clark in 1979. Indirect speech acts are those that have a literal meaning (e.g., “Do you have a dollar?” – the surface question is a request for information) as well as an indirect …
Essentials Of Language Testing For Malaysian Teachers, Arshad Abd Samad
Essentials Of Language Testing For Malaysian Teachers, Arshad Abd Samad
Arshad Abd Samad
This is a chapter from a book on language testing that was written to address the need to use tests to not only measure language output or product alone but also to utilize tests as an impetus to language learning. This book is intended as a bridge between the more traditional concepts of testing and measurement in teaching English as a Second Language to one that is more contemporary and compatible with modern views of language learning and education.

How Do Polish Learners Of English Rate Bilingual And Monolingual Dictionaries?, Robert Lew
Robert Lew
The topic of this paper is the evaluation by Polish learners of English of bilingual and monolingual dictionaries used by those learners. Data for the paper come from 712 Polish learners of English representing a broad range of EFL proficiency levels. Subjects were asked to rate two dictionaries: their dictionary of first choice and their dictionary of second choice. The effect of choice as a predictor variable is also explored. A tendency is revealed for the mid-level competence learners to give the lowest ratings to their dictionaries. Monolingual dictionaries were given significantly higher ratings than bilingual dictionaries. Subjects rated dictionaries …

Perception Of Place And Secondary Articulation Contrasts In Different Syllable Positions: Language-Particular And Language-Independent Asymmetries, Alexei Kochetov
Alexei Kochetov
This study investigated the perception of place and secondary articulation contrasts in different syllable positions by Russian and Japanese listeners. The consonants involved in the study were the Russian plain (velarized) and palatalized labial and coronal voiceless stops in syllable-initial and syllable-final positions at word boundaries. The findings revealed substantial asymmetries in the perception of the contrasts by both groups of listeners: With respect to positions, consonants in syllable-final position were characterized by lower correct identification rates and (less consistently) longer reaction time than the same consonants in syllable-initial position. Positional differences were accompanied by differences in segment-specific contexts. With …

‘That’S Why I Do It’: Flow And Efl Teachers’ Practices, Christine Tardy
Christine M. Tardy
Csikszentmihalyi's (1997) concept of flow describes a mental state resulting from peak experiences in which the level of challenge is high, but manageable given a person's skills. Because flow occurs at peak moments, these moments can motivate teachers, possibly shaping their classroom practices and giving them insight into their teaching beliefs. This exploratory interview study examines ten EFL teachers' flow experiences at work, and considers their implications for teacher education. The teachers all reported experiencing flow, and key categories relating to its occurrence were derived from their descriptions. Based on this study, we suggest that the concept of flow provides …

Emerging Hispanic English: New Dialect Formation In The American South, Walt Wolfram, Phillip M. Carter, Rebecca Moriello

Although stable Hispanic populations have existed in some regions of the United States for centuries, other regions, including the mid-Atlantic South, are just experiencing the emergence of permanent Hispanic communities. This situation o¡ers an ideal opportunity to examine the dynamics of new dialect formation in progress, and the extent to which speakers acquire local dialect traits as they learn English as a second language. We focus on the pro- duction of the /ai/ diphthong among adolescents in two emerging Hispanic communities, one in an urban and one in a rural context. Though both English and Spanish have the diphthong /ai/, the …

Language, Power, And Social Interaction (Fall 2004 Syllabus), Adam Hodges

The objective of this course is to critically examine the role of language in articulating, maintaining, and subverting relations of power in society. We will ground our study by first looking at basic ideas on linguistic relativity, the idea that one adjusts to reality in large part through language. Then, we will explore the many dimensions of power in society and the role that language plays in this diagram of power. We will focus specifically on media language and political language; and critically analyze examples of discourse in an attempt to understand the power relations that undergird social interactions. This …

This paper explores the item-based nature of child language acquisition by examining data from the CHILDES database (MacWhinney 2000). Two studies are explicated: the first uses pooled data from several children, and the second follows a single child longitudinally. The results show that the learning of the complex construction consisting of a main clause followed by an infinitival compliment, e.g. I want to play, center around a single verb, want, even though other candidate verbs exist in the children’s vocabulary. We provide empirical evidence to show that children initially learn grammar via item-based units and gradually break down complex constructions …
