Position Paper For The 1986 Tavertet Spain Colloquium On Cultural Resistance, Robert K. Thomas Dec 1986

Position Paper For The 1986 Tavertet Spain Colloquium On Cultural Resistance, Robert K. Thomas

Robert K. Thomas

For most minority peoples in the world today, cultural resistance and cultural survival is dependent on their continuing social survival. Many minority peoples are modernly citizens of large nation-states, surrounded by numerous and very different majority groups. Their continued existence is tenuous, to say the least. This is particularly true of small tribal nationalities in some parts of the world.

Is Increased Price Flexibility Stabilizing?, J. Bradford Delong, Lawrence Summers

J. Bradford DeLong

This paper uses John Taylor's model of overlapping contracts to show that increased wage and price flexibility can easily be destabilizing because of the Mundell effect. Simulations based on "realistic" parameter values suggest that increases in price flexibility might well increase the cyclical variability of output in the United States.

The Separation Of Law And Morals, Noel Reynolds Nov 1986

The Separation Of Law And Morals, Noel Reynolds

Noel B Reynolds

The classic opposition of legal positivism and natural law theory resurfaces continually and reminds us that we have yet to resolve this key conflict in our ways of understanding the moral authority of law. The strengths and weaknesses of the two theories are reviewed—both have fatal flaws. Conventionalism is proposed as a means of finding internal standards in a man-made system of law. The naturally emerging standards for a conventionalist system of law turn out to be the already familiar principles of the rule of law.

Soldiers Of Fortune, Ted Bergstrom Jun 1986

Soldiers Of Fortune, Ted Bergstrom

Ted C Bergstrom

This paper shows that if workers have identical wealths, abilities, and preferences then a draft lottery is Pareto superior to a voluntary army. It also shows that if being a civilian is a "normal good", then the optimal pay schedule will be such that people prefer not being chosen for the army. The paper shows how this idea extends to occupational choice in general and shows that pure gambles taken prior to occupational choice can substitute for lotteries that determine one's occupation. This paper repairs what I think is a major flaw in standard general equilibrium theory, which assumes away …

Psychological And Behavioral Correlates Of Feeling Fat In Women, Ruth Striegel-Moore, Gail Mcavay, Judith Rodin Jun 1986

Psychological And Behavioral Correlates Of Feeling Fat In Women, Ruth Striegel-Moore, Gail Mcavay, Judith Rodin

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Because feeling fat may be an important risk factor in bulimia, two studies were conducted to investigate the psychological and behavioral variables associated with feeling fat and dissatisfied with one's body. In the first study, 46 female undergraduates completed a series of questions measuring a variety of psychological variables related to body image and weight. Regression analysis found live variables that were significantly related to feeling fat: percent overweight, perfectionism, perceived social pressure toward thinness, social comparison regarding weight, and the degree to which failure experiences affect feelings about one's body. Feeling fat was also highly correlated with perceived lack …

Uncertain Parameter Values And The Choice Among Policy Options, Don Fullerton, Andrew Lyon May 1986

Uncertain Parameter Values And The Choice Among Policy Options, Don Fullerton, Andrew Lyon

Don Fullerton

We use a tax policy example to show how debate on the value of an elasticity parameter translates into a debate about policy choices. To construct this example, suppose that the choice among four particular tax reform options is based on a single measure of efficiency gain. For each reform, we show how the size of this gain depends upon the elasticity of saving with respect to the net rate of return. Moreover, within quite narrow and reasonable bounds for the elasticity parameter, we find regions in which each of three different tax reforms turns out to dominate the others.

Hume And His Critics--Reid And Kames, Noel B. Reynolds May 1986

Hume And His Critics--Reid And Kames, Noel B. Reynolds

Noel B Reynolds

This presentation was in response to Kenneth MacKinnon’s defense of Thomas Reid’s preference for natural virtue against David Hume’s conventionalism in his theory of law. It is argued that because Hume’s legal theory follows easily from his theory of human nature, Reid and Kames—and MacKinnon—need to refute Hume at that level to be successful in their rejection of his conventionalism.

Morality And The Rule Of Law, Noel Reynolds May 1986

Morality And The Rule Of Law, Noel Reynolds

Noel B Reynolds

This paper lays out the logic of a conservative view of liberty and morality based on an understanding of human nature as both social and rational on the one hand, and radically individual and self-seeking on the other. Without public virtue, a people cannot govern itself as a free people. But neither virtue nor moral truth can be legislated. The rule of law under constitutionalism is the most successful human arrangement for providing freedom and allowing moral action on the part of individuals.

The Embodiment Of Masculinity: "Cultural, Psychological, And Behavioral Dimensions", Marc E. Mishkind, Judith Rodin, Lisa R. Silberstein, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Women have traditionally been concerned with their appearance. Indeed, the pursuit of and preoccupation with beauty are central features of the female sex-role stereotype (Rodin, Silberstein, & Striegel-Moore, 1985). Perhaps because of this, we have ignored the significant role that physical appearance and body image play for men. Certainly, examination of current magazines and other media strongly suggests that bodily concern is strong for men. Advertisements celebrate the young, lean, muscular male body, and men's fashions have...

Toward An Understanding Of Risk Factors For Bulimia, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Lisa R. Silberstein, Judith Rodin

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Explores why women in general are more prone to develop bulimia than men and which women in particular have a higher risk of becoming bulimic. Risk factors for bulimia are discussed in terms of sociocultural variables, such as the central role of beauty in the female sex-role stereotype; developmental processes; psychological variables; and biological factors, including genetic determinants of weight, the disregulation of body weight and eating through dieting, affective instability, and family variables. The sociocultural and psychological mediators that contribute to the increased risk of bulimia in this era are discussed, including a shift toward an increased emphasis on …

Intermodality Superfactors In The Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16pf), Eight State Battery (8sq), And Objective Motivation Analysis Test (Oab), Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1986

Intermodality Superfactors In The Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16pf), Eight State Battery (8sq), And Objective Motivation Analysis Test (Oab), Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

The behavioural scientists Eysenck and Cattell have much in common, having investigated intrapersonal psychological structure, albeit at different levels in its hierarchical structure. Eysenck has studied the personality domain in terms of a typological model involving a small number of important superfactors. In contrast, Cattell has typically resorted to analyses of a considerably larger number of primary factors. While both approaches are complementary, nevertheless, little research has been undertaken into intermodality superfactors. The present study, therefore, examines Cattellian intermodality superfactors across the normal personality trait, mood state, and motivational dynamic domains, respectively, in the hope of elucidating broad affect dimensions …

Application Of Factor Analysis In Psychological Research: Improvement Of Simple Structure By Computer Assisted Graphic Oblique Transformation: A Brief Note, Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1986

Application Of Factor Analysis In Psychological Research: Improvement Of Simple Structure By Computer Assisted Graphic Oblique Transformation: A Brief Note, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

Several studies have suggested the efficacy of topological rotation as an adjunct to oblique analytical rotation in attaining improved approximation to maximum simple structure of the factor pattern matrix. Recently, using a higher- order scale factoring of the Objective Motivation Analysis Test (MAT), and the Eight State Questionnaire (8SQ), Boyle(1983) reported a 6.17% increase in the ±.10 hyperplane count after only five Rotoplot cycles. Four of the 11 extracted factors were simplified in line with Thurstone’s simple structure requirements. The present brief note examines the issue of topological rotation in regard to its usefulness and ease of application by investigators …

Estimation Of Measurement Redundancy Across The Eight State Questionnaire And Differential Emotions Scale, Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1986

Estimation Of Measurement Redundancy Across The Eight State Questionnaire And Differential Emotions Scale, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

The present article addresses the important issue of the psychometric assessment of mood, and evaluates the measurement overlap (redundancy) between two multidimensional instruments, the Eight State Questionnaire (8SQ) and the Differential Emotions Scale (DES-IV). Both measures are purported to index some of the major emotions evident in human behaviour. While the subscale descriptions differ somewhat across the two measures, nevertheless, some apparent commonalities exist, although in general each instrument seems to be tapping significant discrete psychological variance within the mood-state sphere. In order to quantify the measurement redundancy across the two scales, and to elucidate the content similarities and differences …

Analysis Of Typological Factors Across The Eight State Questionnaire And The Differential Emotions Scale, Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1986

Analysis Of Typological Factors Across The Eight State Questionnaire And The Differential Emotions Scale, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

The use of multivariate mood-state scales has recently become quite popular. Two instruments designed to measure fundamental emotions are the Eight State Questionnaire and the Differential Emotions Scale. As it appears that each instrument taps somewhat different sectors of the mood-state sphere, elucidation of a smaller number of typological factors across both instruments seems desirable to provide the basis for an instrument which better taps the total mood-state sphere than does either one of these alone. In the present study, a combined scale-factoring of the two instruments is undertaken on a sample of 450 college students. Results suggest that six …

Prediction Of Cognitive Learning Performance From Multivariate State‑Change Scores, Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1986

Prediction Of Cognitive Learning Performance From Multivariate State‑Change Scores, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

While the role of non-ability intrapersonal variables including personality traits and motivational dynamic factors has been well documented in numerous studies, the relationship of transient states to cognitive performance has been relatively neglected. Boyle (1983b, 1986) demonstrated that emotional states powerfully influence cognitive learning outcomes under conditions of stressful activation. However, under neutral, non-emotive conditions, it remained unclear what role if any was played by mood states in cognitive learning. The failure to employ change measures in these studies may have obscured the likely influence of emotions on cognitive performance in the neutral situation. This study re-examines the relationship of …

Higher-Order Factors In The Differential Emotions Scale (Des-Iii), Gregory J. Boyle Jan 1986

Higher-Order Factors In The Differential Emotions Scale (Des-Iii), Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

The 30-item version of Izard's Differential Emotions Scale (DES-III) was submitted to an iterative principal factoring plus oblique (direct Oblimin) rotation to simple structure, on a sample of 204 University of Delaware undergraduates. The intercorrelation matrix for the eight primary emotional-state factors derived, was subsequently subjected to a higher-order factoring. Four second-order factors accounted readily for the variance measured in the DES-III scales and this suggests that the multivariate mood-state instrument might be more profitably scored for secondary factors, in certain instances. This conclusion in no way detracts from the importance of the DES-III primaries, but adds to the usefulness …

The Prophecy Manuscript - Part 2, Robert K. Thomas

Robert K. Thomas

The Prophecy Manuscript by Robert K. Thomas is not an academic volume. Instead it is a critical appraisal of American Indian life for American Indian readers. Thomas, in this volume, makes no attempt at ‘pulling punches’. He is critical of Indian militants, nationalists, bureaucrats, educators and pseudo-religious leaders.

Part 2 contains step 3. The Need for Unity Among all Tribes and step 4. The Need to Avoid Entanglements. .
