Six Leadership Lessons From Photography, Brenda L. Boyd Aug 2019

Six Leadership Lessons From Photography, Brenda L. Boyd

Brenda Boyd, PhD

"I learned that the photographers who captured unforgettable images all had some things in common: they seemed to know themselves and people; they had vision, passion, and timing; they had an innate ability to communicate effectively; they took risks; and they learned from their mistakes. I also came to realize that as a result of their unique presence—and often their sacrifice—they made a significant and lasting contribution to our world."

Sex Sells: How Advertising Agencies' Commodification Of Image Affects Older Women In Advertising, Diane Fittipaldi May 2019

Sex Sells: How Advertising Agencies' Commodification Of Image Affects Older Women In Advertising, Diane Fittipaldi

Diane Fittipaldi

The purpose of this study was to understand how advertising agency culture affects the long-term careers of women account executives as they age. The primary research questions were: 1) How do self-image and cultural stereotypes affect the decision to enter the advertising business; 2) How do women navigate the male-dominated culture of the ad agency; 3) What strategies do women use to get ahead in advertising; 4) How do women survive long term in a culture that favors youth? Qualitative data was collected via unstructured, one-on-one, in-depth interviews with a nationally sourced sample 15 female advertising account executives aged 40 …

Perceptions Of Leaders, Heroes And Villains: Mystery Resolution And Meaning-Making, George R. Goethals, Scott T. Allison Dec 2018

Perceptions Of Leaders, Heroes And Villains: Mystery Resolution And Meaning-Making, George R. Goethals, Scott T. Allison

Scott T. Allison

In this chapter, we review the myriad ways that people resolve mystery and uncertainty in social perception. People rely on perceptual, cognitive, and motivational resources at their disposal to acquire an understanding of mysterious persons, groups, and circumstances.  Perceptual forces at work in the mystery resolution process include principles of gestalt organization.  Cognitive processes that come into play include people’s use of impressions, prototypes, archetypes, and implicit theories of leadership, heroism, and villainy.  Moreover, we describe several key motivational forces that steer people toward desired conclusions about mystery. Implications for social behavior and perception are discussed.

Euphemisms And Ethics: A Language-Centered Analysis Of Penn State’S Sexual Abuse Scandal, Jeremy Fyke, Kristen Lucas Feb 2018

Euphemisms And Ethics: A Language-Centered Analysis Of Penn State’S Sexual Abuse Scandal, Jeremy Fyke, Kristen Lucas

Kristen Lucas

For 15 years, former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky used his Penn State University perquisites to lure young and fatherless boys by offering them special access to one of the most revered football programs in the country. He repeatedly used the football locker room as a space to groom, molest, and rape his victims. In February 2001, an eye-witness alerted Penn State's top leaders that Sandusky was caught sexually assaulting a young boy in the showers. Instead of taking swift action against Sandusky, leaders began a cover-up that is considered one of the worst scandals in sports history. While public …

Sexuality In Leadership: A Long-Neglected Topic With Vast Implications For Individuals And Society, James Beggan, Scott T. Allison Dec 2017

Sexuality In Leadership: A Long-Neglected Topic With Vast Implications For Individuals And Society, James Beggan, Scott T. Allison

Scott T. Allison

As an area of study, the intersection between leadership and sexuality has not been adequately addressed, despite the importance of sexual issues influencing leadership processes. To address this limitation, this chapter introduces three distinct ways in which to understand sexuality and leadership. One way is in terms of sexual leaders, i.e., individuals or organizations that put forward new ideas about how people should embrace their sexuality. The second way refers to the way that leaders regardless of the industry or environment in which they lead must think about the way that sexuality influences how they should govern. The third area, …

Does The “Zipless Dance” Exist? Leadership, Followership, And Sexuality In Social Dancing, James K. Beggan, Scott T. Allison Dec 2017

Does The “Zipless Dance” Exist? Leadership, Followership, And Sexuality In Social Dancing, James K. Beggan, Scott T. Allison

Scott T. Allison

We conceptualize social dancing as a form of non-verbal communication geared toward creating the coordinated movement of two people done in time, and over time, to musical accompaniment. This chapter focuses on a type of dancing, social dancing, where ordinary people get together to express themselves at the local dance studio. Unlike what transpires in Singin’ in the Rain and Dancing with the Stars, social dancing is not planned out in advance and participants’ skill level can range from a first-time beginner to a seasoned 30-year veteran. Social dancing can be considered a form of serious leisure (Stebbins, 2007), …

The Knowing Model: Encouraging Behavior Change In Organizations Through Awareness, Integration, And Knowing, Darin Freeburg Dec 2017

The Knowing Model: Encouraging Behavior Change In Organizations Through Awareness, Integration, And Knowing, Darin Freeburg

Darin Freeburg

Leadership is often responsible for behavior change in their organizations. This paper outlines a context-based model—utilizing existing theories and models in Knowledge Management and Library and Information Science—to increase leadership’s effectiveness in this area. The Knowing Model approaches behavior change as an issue of information content, dissemination, and use of that information—all within a complex environment with additional social barriers. A behavior—one that an organization has unsuccessfully attempted to change in the pastis identified by leadership. These previous attempts serve as a baseline from which to measure success of the proposed model. The target behavior change is one …

Fostering Leadership Capacity Among Black Male Achievers.Pdf, Jasmine Collins, Cecilia E. Suarez, Cameron Beatty, David Rosch Jul 2017

Fostering Leadership Capacity Among Black Male Achievers.Pdf, Jasmine Collins, Cecilia E. Suarez, Cameron Beatty, David Rosch

Cameron C. Beatty

This study investigates the extent to which leadership capacity gains differ between participants of a leader development session targeted towards Black men and (a) other Black men who participated in racially and gender-diverse sessions; and (b) a racially proportionate sample of other men in racially and gender-diverse sessions. We employed an anti-deficit achievement framework within this research. Findings suggested that Black men who attended an all-Black Male session made gains similar or greater than each comparison group, even considering elevated capacity levels prior to participating. This study addresses important implications for understanding how engaging with same-race, same-gendered peers in formal …

Policy Advocacy And Leadership Training For Formerly Incarcerated Women: An Empowerment Evaluation Of Reconnect, A Program Of The Women In Prison Project, Correctional Association Of New York, Rahbel Rahman

Rahbel Rahman

There is limited knowledge on re-entry initiatives for formerly incarcerated women specifically focusing on building women’s advocacy and leadership skills. Our research highlights ReConnect, a 12-session, innovative advocacy and leadership development program rooted in an integrated framework of empowerment, and transformational leadership theories. Based on CBPR principles, we conducted an empowerment evaluation where ReConnect graduates, staff members, and evaluators in an egalitarian process designed, collected, and analyzed data on how ReConnect assists formerly incarcerated women in the reentry process. The evaluation’s purpose is to offer practitioners and researchers an explanatory model on how to help formerly incarcerate women access …

Leadership And Sexuality, James Beggan, Scott T. Allison Dec 2016

Leadership And Sexuality, James Beggan, Scott T. Allison

Scott T. Allison

What is the relationship between sexuality and leadership? What comes to mind first are vivid instances where individuals, thought to be acting as trusted stewards of their constituents’ best interests, become embroiled in a sex-related scandal. It is not hard to find examples of leaders whose careers and notable accomplishments are tarnished permanently by one revealed indiscretion. Technically, although guilty of marital infidelity, Bill Clinton’s crime with regard to Monica Lewinsky was not the affair but charges of perjury that stemmed from lying about the affair. Of course, he only lied because he knew there would be a scandal if …

Heroic Leadership, Scott T. Allison Dec 2016

Heroic Leadership, Scott T. Allison

Scott T. Allison

The world’s most revered leaders have traveled the hero’s journey of personal transformation and, in turn, have used their gifts to transform others. The heroic leader’s journey is the human journey, replete with struggle, growth, learning, transformation, and an ascendency from followership to heroic leadership. Those who dare to transform, or who are compelled to do so by circumstance, grow into fully developed human beings ready, willing, and able to transform others. The transformed hero represents the pinnacle of human maturity, the state of wellbeing that allows people to flourish and experience eudaimonia.

Clinical Chatter: Every Nurse Informed, Carolyn Talbott, Lynn Watson, Matthew Sorenson, Joseph D. Tariman Phd

Joseph D Tariman PhD, RN, ANP-BC, FAAN

Aims and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the acceptability and usability of
a standardized communication tool for nurses.
Background and Significance: Communication is key in healthcare. On a daily, if not hourly,
basis, nursing staff is inundated with new information regarding tools and resources, practice
changes and the work environment. However, there is currently no standardized messaging or
delivery method to effectively communicate new information. Even with a plethora of
communication tools such as flyers, posters, emails, unit huddles, and unit meetings there is no
means to guarantee attendance to crucial information.
Design: Descriptive, cross sectional …

Narratives Of Engaging Women In Perceptions About Library Leadership, Elizabeth A. Curry Aug 2016

Narratives Of Engaging Women In Perceptions About Library Leadership, Elizabeth A. Curry

Elizabeth Curry

This paper is a collage of women's perceptions about leadership. It focuses on women in library leadership. The impetus for this study is one of personal reflection, as well as an introductory excursion into qualitative research. I was interested in clarifying my own feelings and thoughts about leadership and learning more about the way other library leaders perceive themselves as leaders. I wanted to understand how women defined leadership and their roles as leaders. A related purpose was to see how people characterize themselves and develop an image of leadership according to the opinions of others. Participants had served as …

A Phenomenological Study Exploring The Leadership Development Experiences Of Academic Research Library Leaders, Beth Mcneil

Beth McNeil

This phenomenological study describes the leadership development experiences of academic librarians currently working in leadership roles in academic research libraries to discover their experiences of being a library leader and to explore how they describe their own leadership development. Study participants identified as having experienced positive leadership development experiences during their careers as academic research library leaders and were, at the time of this study, employed and actively working in leadership positions reporting directly to the head of their academic research library. The goal of this exploration was to understand what the academic library leaders had experienced, with regard to …

Empathy And Leadership, Ronald T. Humphrey, Laural Adams Dec 2015

Empathy And Leadership, Ronald T. Humphrey, Laural Adams

Scott T. Allison

Empathy helps explain why heroes take risks on behalf of others and make personal sacrifices for people and causes that they believe in. The chapter relates the literature on heroes and empathy to the research on charismatic leadership, and maintains that empathy and heroic behavior are key components of charismatic leadership. Although heroic empathy can be seen as a characteristic of heroic individuals, this chapter also examines heroic empathy from a distributed cognition perspective that positions heroic leaders in the larger context of the organization and in the system in which the organization resides. By using a distributed cognition approach, …

Paradoxical Truths In Heroic Leadership: Implications For Leadership Development And Effectiveness, Scott T. Allison, Jennifer L. Cecilione Dec 2015

Paradoxical Truths In Heroic Leadership: Implications For Leadership Development And Effectiveness, Scott T. Allison, Jennifer L. Cecilione

Scott T. Allison

In this chapter, we discuss the basic elements of heroic leadership, showing how heroism and exemplary leadership are deeply intertwined. We then describe six paradoxical truths about heroic leadership that are often unrecognized and unappreciated. We believe that ignorance of these counterintuitive truths and paradoxes about heroic leadership can lead to misunderstandings about leaders, leadership, and leadership development. Most of these paradoxes are a central part of the hero’s journey as described by comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell (1949). We will discuss the genesis of these paradoxical truths, and we will suggest ways that an awareness of these principles can engender …

Spiritual Leadership: A Fresh Look At An Ancient Human Issue, Scott T. Allison, Craig T. Kocher, George R. Goethals

Scott T. Allison

Abraham Lincoln’s iconic phrase, “the better angels of our nature,” revealed his belief that the noblest qualities of humanity would heal a divided nation. This book, Frontiers in Spiritual Leadership: Discovering the Better Angels of Our Nature, is about the expression of these noble qualities and how leaders such as Lincoln make that expression possible. two key processes of spiritual leadership. Spiritual leaders create a vision in which leaders and followers experience a sense of calling so that their lives have meaning. Second, they establish a culture based on the values of altruistic love whereby leaders and followers have …

Suffering And Sacrifice: Individual And Collective Benefits, And Implications For Leadership, Scott T. Allison, Gwendolyn C. Setterberg Dec 2015

Suffering And Sacrifice: Individual And Collective Benefits, And Implications For Leadership, Scott T. Allison, Gwendolyn C. Setterberg

Scott T. Allison

In this chapter, we review the ways in which suffering and sacrifice are beneficial to human beings. In our review, we draw from both ancient and modern spiritual traditions and a large body of psychological research on the determinants of happiness and mental health. Our review is necessarily an abbreviated one; a thorough treatment of this topic would surely fill an entire volume. This chapter represents an initial attempt to illuminate basic insights, using broad brushstrokes, about the ways in which suffering and sacrifice contribute to people’s emotional, behavioral, and spiritual wellness. In addition to describing the psychological and spiritual …

Intellectual Capital In Churches: Matching Solution Complexity With Problem Complexity, Darin Freeburg Dec 2015

Intellectual Capital In Churches: Matching Solution Complexity With Problem Complexity, Darin Freeburg

Darin Freeburg

The problems organizations face have varying degrees of
complexity. What is not often understood, however, is that
the knowledge needed to solve these problems also varies
in complexity, and should match the complexity of the
problem itself. The current study provides grounded theory
for how leaders in churches should approach problems
relating to Intellectual Capital (IC) assets. These intangible
assets are crucial to the ability of churches to create value
that enriches the lives of individuals in their communities.
In two, 90-minute focus groups, the leadership team of a
United Methodist Church in South Carolina, USA was
asked about their …

An Examination Of Community Practice Social Workers As Social Intrapreneurs Or Social Entrepreneurs, Monica Nandan, Gokul Mandayam, Carol S. Collard, Rebekah Tchouta

Monica Nandan

Social entrepreneurs and social intrapreneurs are characterized as being socially innovative, proactive and willing to take calculated risks. Evidenced by their practices and behaviors, community practice social workers engage in social change in ways similar to those of social entrepreneurs and social intrapreneurs. This article describes the findings of an explorative study that used survey design methodology to understand the level of social entrepreneurship or social intrapreneurship behaviors of twenty-seven community practice social workers in a Midwestern state.  These findings have implications for training and educating community practice social workers, and social entrepreneurs and social intrapreneurs, as they attempt to …

Insights Into Academic Librarian Leadership Using The Bolman And Deal Leadership Orientation Framework, Colleen Boff Nov 2015

Insights Into Academic Librarian Leadership Using The Bolman And Deal Leadership Orientation Framework, Colleen Boff

Colleen T. Boff, Ed.D.

Are librarians prepared to lead academic libraries into the increasingly complex future of higher education? Results will be shared from a survey using the Bolman and Deal leadership orientation framework (1990, 1991, 1992, 2003) to explore how academic library leaders and managers in Ohio and Michigan prefer to interpret and solve problems. Consisting of four frames, librarians can view situations through a structural lens (involving policies, rules and organizational charts), a human resources lens (tending to the needs of employees), the political lens (competing for power and scarce resources) or the symbolic lens (storytelling, traditions and symbols). Research conducted in …

Leader Mistreatment, Employee Hostility, And Deviant Behaviors: Integrating Self-Uncertainty And Thwarted Needs Perspectives On Deviance, David M. Mayer, Stefan Thau, Kristina Workman, Marius Van Dijke, David De Cremer Nov 2015

Leader Mistreatment, Employee Hostility, And Deviant Behaviors: Integrating Self-Uncertainty And Thwarted Needs Perspectives On Deviance, David M. Mayer, Stefan Thau, Kristina Workman, Marius Van Dijke, David De Cremer

Kristina Workman

Integrating self-uncertainty management and thwarted needs perspectives on leader mistreatment and workplace deviance, we examine when and why leader mistreatment is associated with workplace deviance. We propose that competence uncertainty strengthens the relationship between leader mistreatment and workplace deviance and that hostility mediates this interactive effect. Four field studies and one experiment support the hypotheses. The first two studies provide evidence for the predicted interaction between leader mistreatment and competence uncertainty, and the next three studies demonstrate that hostility mediates this interactive effect. We discuss an extended social exchange explanation of workplace deviance and highlight the psychological interplay between motives, …

Commentary On ‘Why Compassion Counts!’: Compassion As A Generative Force, Jane E. Dutton, Kristina Workman

Kristina Workman

[Excerpt] Twelve years ago, Peter Frost called upon us to consider why compassion counts. More than a decade later, we can see, feel, and understand why compassion counts both in the field of organizational studies and in our lives as scholars. As he was so many times during his career, Peter was prophetic in identifying and animating a core idea that is central to our field and to our lives. We approach this essay with three goals in mind, all focused on elaborating how compassion is a generative force. By generative, we mean that compassion as an idea opens up …
