The Fragmentation Of Self Within The Indian Novel, Michele Gibney Dec 2000

The Fragmentation Of Self Within The Indian Novel, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

With the novel Midnight’s Children, Rushdie forged a new path for novel-writing. In his epic story the main character became split into two in order to show the many facets of Indian culture. Instead of gaining an understanding of just one way of life, the reader became privy to all the stories being lived in such places as the Methwold estates, the surreal Sundarbans, and the Magician’s Ghetto. The story of one, single individual was lost in the cacophony of voices that each had their own tale to tell in Rushdie’s novel. This new form of writing, which favored the …

The Two Koreas: Prospects For Economic Cooperation And Integration, Marcus Noland Dec 2000

The Two Koreas: Prospects For Economic Cooperation And Integration, Marcus Noland

Marcus Noland

After nearly a half century of strident adherence to the principles of socialism and self-reliance, North Korea may be on the verge of opening itself to outside aid and advice. Motivators include a decade of economic trouble punctuated by declining output and famine as well as underdeveloped infrastructures and reduction in foreign trade and material support. The limits of national selfsufficiency may finally have become admissible in North Korea, as evidenced by recent diplomatic negotiations and cooperative commercial projects with capitalist nations. South Korea, meanwhile, is struggling to regain ground lost in the financial crisis and to correct faults in …

Real Time And Relative Indeterminacy In Economic Theory, Mario Rizzo Dec 2000

Real Time And Relative Indeterminacy In Economic Theory, Mario Rizzo

Mario Rizzo

This article develops the implications of a dynamic conception of time for the idea of plan coordination in economics. It traces the development of some philosophical, scientific and economic theories in the twentieth century. A contrast is made with static or Newtonian views of time in economics.

Gis And Spatial Analysis In Urban And Regional Research, Derek Bond Nov 2000

Gis And Spatial Analysis In Urban And Regional Research, Derek Bond

Derek Bond

The early optimism surrounding GIS has now faded. Few GIS implementations have lived up to expectation. The most successful have been those at the operational level where their main role has been to replace paper maps with digital ones. However, as the cost of GIS implementation falls and spatial data becomes more readily available there is a need to consider the future of GIS and spatial analysis. This is particularly important in the field of urban and regional research especially where considerable investment in GIS has already been made. This paper looks at the major issues that face regional and …

The World Seduces Man. His Home Grounds Him., Michele Gibney Oct 2000

The World Seduces Man. His Home Grounds Him., Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

Between Untouchable and The Bachelor of Arts there is a world of difference in the basic situations of the main characters. One is an uneducated street sweeper and the other is a University graduate, and both have a different conception of the British. However, there is also a common thread that unites the two novels in the main characters concluding acceptance of the “home”/India over the “world”/England. Thus, although different values are assigned to the importance of British colonialism within the texts, in the end each novel comes to a stand wherein Indian culture is favored over the British.

Sequential Screening, Pascal Courty, Hao Li Oct 2000

Sequential Screening, Pascal Courty, Hao Li

hao li

We present a model of price discrimination where a monopolist faces consumers with unitary demands who learn their valuations over time. Consumers are privately informed at the time of contracting about valuation distribution, but they privately learn their actual valuations after contracting. The monopolist sequentially screens consumers with a menu of contracts: they first choose a contract and then choose the level of consumption according to the terms specified in the contract. A deterministic sequential mechanism is a menu of refund contracts, each consisting of an advance payment and a refund amount in case of no consumption, but general sequential …

Risk-Sharing, Sorting, And Early Contracting, Hao Li, Wing Suen Oct 2000

Risk-Sharing, Sorting, And Early Contracting, Hao Li, Wing Suen

hao li

In an assignment market with uncertainty regarding productive ability of participants, early contracting can occur before the uncertainty is resolved as participants balance the trade-off between insurance provided by early bilateral contracts and the gains from more efficient sorting by remaining in the market. We apply competitive equilibrium analysis to determine the patterns of early contracting, the terms of early contracts, and the distribution of benefits of early contracting. Early contracts can be signed between more promising agents (who are more likely to have higher abilities) because the gains from insurance outweigh the loss of inefficient sorting, while less promising …

HOWARD J SHERMAN

Interview with Howard Sherman on Democratic Socialism, based on his book Reinventing Marxism. Interviewer Solveig Wilder comments: "If you're like me, you read a great deal searching for theories that you can apply to your activism. I recently discovered a book called, Reinventing Marxism, which succinctly covers so many of the questions that I've grappled with about Democratic Socialism. Author and DSA member Howard Sherman agreed to give me an interview so that other DSAers could find out about this useful resource."

Factor Analysis Of The Dsm-Iii-R Borderline Personality Disorder Criteria In Psychiatric Inpatients, Charles A. Sanislow, Carlos M. Grilo, Thomas H. Mcglashan Sep 2000

Factor Analysis Of The Dsm-Iii-R Borderline Personality Disorder Criteria In Psychiatric Inpatients, Charles A. Sanislow, Carlos M. Grilo, Thomas H. Mcglashan

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

Objective: The goal of this study was to examine the factor structure of the DSM-III-R criteria for borderline personality disorder in young adult psychiatric inpatients.

Method: The authors assessed 141 acutely ill inpatients with the Personality Disorder Examination, a semistructured diagnostic interview for DSM-III-R personality disorders. They used correlational analyses to examine the associations among the different criteria for borderline personality disorder and performed an exploratory factor analysis.

Results: Cronbach’s coefficient alpha for the borderline personality disorder criteria was 0.69. A principal components factor analysis with a varimax rotation accounted for 57.2% of the variance and revealed three homogeneous factors. …

Bioeconomic Household Modelling For Agricultural Intensification, Gideon Kruseman Sep 2000

Bioeconomic Household Modelling For Agricultural Intensification, Gideon Kruseman

Gideon Kruseman

The study develops a bio-economic modelling framework that permits simultaneous assessment of the effects of technology change and policy measures on household welfare and agro-ecological sustainability indicators. The bio-economic modelling framework expands traditional farm household models to incorporate direct consumption utility functions, to allow for multiple objectives and to permit a meaningful interface with biophysical process models. The resulting model combines econometrically estimated equations in a mathematical programming framework. Model outcomes are analysed using metamodelling tecyhniques.

The bio-economic modelling framework is relevant for policy analysis related to resource degradation in developing countries. The model is applied to Cercle de Koutiala …

Rights And Obligations Of Third Parties, Aristides N. Hatzis Sep 2000

Rights And Obligations Of Third Parties, Aristides N. Hatzis

Aristides N. Hatzis

Three different issues, related to third party involvement in a contractual relationship, are examined. The first two (assignment of contractual rights/delegation of contractual duties and third-party beneficiary contracts) are examined in a unified way. After pointing to the striking similarity between beneficiary and assignment contracts, we discuss the non-simultaneous assent argument, the danger of creating open classes of beneficiaries without the intention of the contracting parties, and other problems. In a second part, we deal with the controversial issue of efficient breach due to inducement by a third party. After reviewing the literature, we briefly consider the use of liquidated …

The Political Economy Of Social Security, Georges Casamatta, Helmuth Cremer, Pierre Pestieau Sep 2000

The Political Economy Of Social Security, Georges Casamatta, Helmuth Cremer, Pierre Pestieau

Georges Casamatta

We consider a two-period overlapping generations model in which individual voters differ by age and by productivity. In such a setting, a redistributive pay-as-you-go system is politically sustainable, even when the interest rate is higher than the rate of population growth. The workers with medium wages (not those with the lowest wages) and the retirees form a majority which votes for a positive level of social security. This level depends on the difference between the rates of population growth and interest as well as on the redistributiveness of the benefit rule.

Disorder Eating, Acculturation, And Treatment-Seeking In A Community Sample Of Hispanic, Asian, Black, And White Women, Fary M. Cachelin, Catherine Veisel, Emilia Barzegarnazari, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore Aug 2000

Disorder Eating, Acculturation, And Treatment-Seeking In A Community Sample Of Hispanic, Asian, Black, And White Women, Fary M. Cachelin, Catherine Veisel, Emilia Barzegarnazari, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore

Ruth Striegel Weissman

The purpose of this study was to examine disordered eating, acculturation, and treatment-seeking in a community sample of Hispanic, Asian, Black, and White women. Participants were 118 women with disordered eating (49 Hispanic, 21 Asian, 23 Black, and 25 White) and 118 healthy controls. Interviews were conducted to assess eating and weight-related behaviors, psychiatric symptoms, acculturation, and health care usage. Results indicated that the four ethnic groups were equally likely to present behavioral symptoms of bulimia, anorexia, or a binge-eating disorder. Hispanics were the most likely to use diuretics, and Black women were the most likely to use laxatives. Despite …
