An undergraduate course in American Studies at Macalester College has been developed and taught in collaboration with a faculty member to produce and publish an open-access student peer-reviewed journal. A discussion of the development of the course, “Engaging the Public: Writing and Publishing in American Studies”, the course content, the integration of scholarly communication and information fluency concepts into the course, as well as student learning outcomes, and integration into existing library workflows are presented. The rise of electronic publication is irrevocably altering the landscape of scholarly communication. Discussions of electronic modes of publication typically focus on new business models, open access, OAI protocols, and retaining the authority of the peer review process in a world increasingly relying on crowdsourcing. This presentation focuses on a less-discussed but very fundamental aspect of the epub revolution in scholarly communication: the evolution of codex-based monographs, and articles to the next form. Repositories are playing a key role in facilitating these new relationships by enabling libraries to offer new and valuable services to these constituencies.
