A Comparative Study Of Resource And Service Needs Of International Students At An Academic Library, Jia He

International students constitute a large part of the student population on campuses in the United States. According to Open Doors Report of the U.S. Institution of International Education (2017), the number of international students in the United States was 582,984 in 2007. Ten years later, this number increased by 85% to 1,078,822, which means the total population of international students in the United States nearly doubled in the last decade (Institution of International Education, 2017). In 2017, the population of foreign students in Alabama was 9,549, which ranked 29th in the United States (Institution of International Education, 2017).

The article discusses the improvement of user experience in academic libraries. The implications of automation on the role of librarians and library staff are discussed. The success of libraries is measured in terms of their inputs, the activities they support and their outputs, such as circulation transactions and reference questions answered.

The article describes the concept, methodology, data gathering and study expansion using the Reference Effort Assessment Data (READ) scale developed at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. READ Scale pertains to a tool for recording vital supplemental qualitative statistics gathered when reference librarians assist users with their inquiries or research-related activities. The scale is easy to use compared with the traditional method of gathering reference statistics.
