Wak'as, Mallkis, And The Inca Afterlife: The Hydrological Connection Between The Incan Empirical And Nonempirical Worlds, Marius C. Vold

The ruling elite amongst the indigenous groups of the Andes region, often referred to as the Incas, were, before European contact, a non-literal society. Therefore, our understanding of their religious beliefs pertaining to the relationship between life and death, and the intricate relationship between this belief system and the environment surrounding the Inca is heavily influenced by post-European contact, often clouded by European propaganda and a lack of cultural relativism. Comparative Civilizations Review

This article traces the development of indigenous technology before the arrival of outsiders after the 15th century. It covers sub-Saharan Africa, pre-Columbian Americas, and Oceania. Under the first category, the role of Bantu-speakers in spreading technology is examined as are the evolution of advanced societies throughout Africa. In the second category, the achievements of the Mayan, Aztec, and Inca are examined. In the third category, the role of the Austronesians and Polynesians are examined.

[Review Of] Eric Wertheimer. Imagined Empires: Incas, Aztecs, And The New World Of American Literature, David Carey Jr

Ethnic Studies Review

Eric Wertheimer convincingly argues that inaccuracy and omission in historical narratives made an indelible mark on American identity in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The ethnic diversity of America, even though sparingly portrayed in the historical writing of the time, also had an important effect on American identity. Wertheimer concludes that while American identity has a public concept, individuals determine the real meaning in private spheres. He examines five Anglo, male authors (Philip Freneau, Joel Barlow, William Prescott, Herman Melville, and Walt Whitman) to ascertain what they thought of as American history and who should be represented in it.
