Sawer: Melampaui Ruang Dan Meluaskan Jangkauan Interaksi Pada Pertunjukan Dangdut, Michael H.B Raditya
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This article deals with the issues of sawer that have appeared over time, both in live and online performances. This topic is interesting because sawer is intertwined in the interaction and participation of two active subjects, namely the singer and her audience. In live performances, the exchange between singers and their audiences happens in the same space and time. On the other hand, accommodating sawer in online dangdut performances is a challenge. However, in 2020 there was a lot of interaction and participation—and even sawer—in online shows. I believe this is not the first glimpse of this phenomenon because online …
Suburban Cosmopolitanism: How Niceness Undermines Patriotism, Joseph Natali
Suburban Cosmopolitanism: How Niceness Undermines Patriotism, Joseph Natali
Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas
Many prominent conservatives of the 20th century have commented on moral superiority of a love of a particular place and community over a general cosmopolitan love of humanity. For a multitude of reasons, suburban living does not help to foster this love of one’s immediate surroundings. Suburbs, despite being a “nice” and “comfortable” place to live, create a set of conditions that undermine the development of a genuine love of one’s land and neighbor by physically separating one from two of the most important aspects of human existence: work and community. In the absence of a genuine love of place, …
Global Subcultures: The Case Of Spanish Corporate Expatriates, Antonio Martín-Cabello Ph.D.
Global Subcultures: The Case Of Spanish Corporate Expatriates, Antonio Martín-Cabello Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
In the not very extensive sociological and anthropological scientific literature dedicated to corporate expatriates, it is frequently argued that expatriates create a subculture of a global character. This article centers on researching the presence of such a subculture among Spanish corporate expatriates. The research undertaken here utilizes a qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews, gathered over a period of six months, the selection of which was based on strategic criteria derived from the available quantitative studies on corporate expatriates. The analysis of the interviews suggests the presence of common cultural patterns among the Spanish corporate expatriates and the corporate expatriates …
The Cosmopolitan War Machine, Lucas Waggoner
The Cosmopolitan War Machine, Lucas Waggoner
Access*: Interdisciplinary Journal of Student Research and Scholarship
The endless struggle between state sovereignty and individual rights is central to discussions of political conflict and human rights. In this essay, I will be utilizing, in addition to cosmopolitan philosophy, Deleuze and Guattari’s metaphysical masterpiece: Nomadology: The War Machine. I lay out a proposal for a potential method through which subalterns and other oppressed groups might obtain more cohesive representation, and use this representation to better protect their rights against the violent oppression of the states.
I use ideas of establishing and perpetuating norms through legal and political discourse as a key tool for the continuation of the …
Being Muslim, Being Cosmopolitan: Transgressing The Liberal Global, Chad Haines Ph.D.
Being Muslim, Being Cosmopolitan: Transgressing The Liberal Global, Chad Haines Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
The practices and concepts of Muslim cosmopolitanism are rooted in Islamic ideas, providing the foundations for informal “comings together” that foster new kinds of ethical communities. Muslim cosmopolitanism transgresses global normative aspirations of the liberal West that attempt to impose a singular way of being a global citizen. The informal, ethical communities that are inherent to a Muslim cosmopolitan vision also reject the absolutist visions of Islamists, such as those promoted by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, which, like Western liberal aspirations, attempt to impose a singular vision of the global. The article traces Muslim cosmopolitan ethics in …
Cosmopolitanism And Pancultural Universals: Our Common Denominator And An Anthropologically Based Cosmopolitanism, Christoph Antweiler Ph.D.
Cosmopolitanism And Pancultural Universals: Our Common Denominator And An Anthropologically Based Cosmopolitanism, Christoph Antweiler Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
How can we conceive of global culture as an entity without playing unity and diversity off one another? The diversity of interconnected cultures on a bounded planet requires shared orientations. Thus, the conceptualization of a cosmopolitan humanism is an urgent project for humanity. Particularly, it is of urgent necessity that we determine what a version of cosmopolitan humanism looks like that does not rush to universalize the views and historical experiences of the European or American world? The need for unity is juxtaposed against the ubiquitous tendency to differentiate. All are alike, yet all are different, and above all, everyone …

Cosmopolitanism And Global Justice: A Review Essay Of Cosmopolitan Regard By Richard Vernon, Tiana-Renée C. Silva
Cosmopolitanism And Global Justice: A Review Essay Of Cosmopolitan Regard By Richard Vernon, Tiana-Renée C. Silva
e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work
While geologists may not be able to find physical proof to suggest that the world is shrinking, social scientists are convinced that this is the case. The amount of information that is shared amongst the world's citizens has grown exponentially over the years, and evidence of an increasingly interconnected world can be seen in every facet of our everyday lives from the food we eat to what we watch on television. Thousands of miles that once divided us from one another are now eliminated by telephones, the Internet, and even the ability to make telephone calls over the Internet. In …
A Review Of Inhuman Conditions: On Cosmopolitanism And Human Rights, Jessica Browne
A Review Of Inhuman Conditions: On Cosmopolitanism And Human Rights, Jessica Browne
e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work
Pheng Cheah's book Inhuman Conditions: On Cosmopolitanism and Human Rights connects globalization and cosmopolitanism to the humanities in an effort to understand the nature of humanity itself. At its core, Cheah's arguments seem to relate to the quote from his book, "Humanity . . . is, after all, an interminable work of collaboration and comparison."[1] He makes his way through various stages of discourse. First, he presents theconcept of new cosmopolitanism as a departure from the cosmopolitanism of Immanuel Kant and Karl Marx. He positions new cosmopolitanism within an intellectual and philosophical paradigm relative to nationalism and cosmopolitanism as "vehicles …
Diplomacy And Cosmopolitanism In A Globalized World, Adina Borcan Ph.D.
Diplomacy And Cosmopolitanism In A Globalized World, Adina Borcan Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Due to the fact that there is a new world culture, with increasing connections of varied local cultures, the characteristics of the 21st century seem to be globalization, seen as “a matter of increasing long-distance interconnectedness, at least across national boundaries, preferably between continents as well” (Hannerz, 1996, p. 17). However, despite this tendency towards globalization, there are still some communities who have no contacts even within the same country (different tribes from an African country, for example) or countries which are isolated due to political doctrine (North Korea, for example), where contact with the rest of the world is …
The Sinkholes Of Global Finance: Racialization And Cosmopolitanism Among Financial Elites In Malaysia, Laura Elder Ph.D.
The Sinkholes Of Global Finance: Racialization And Cosmopolitanism Among Financial Elites In Malaysia, Laura Elder Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
An ethnographic examination of the day-to-day networking sociality of financial elites in Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong shows that, in line with ethnographic studies of core country elites, the subjectivities inculcated among hedge fund managers show racial and class cleavages, but in fund managers’ work, bridging capital structures takes primacy, while bridging structures of privilege remains unacknowledged and thus provides an advantage to those who display conspicuously cosmopolitan consumption and networking sociality. Simultaneously, fund managers’ pervasive ascription of objectivity to a perspective associated with white masculinity creates a structural disadvantage for women, racialized others, and those lacking training or networking …
Islam, Cultural Hybridity And Cosmopolitanism: New Muslim Intellectuals On Globalization, Carool Kersten Ph.D.
Islam, Cultural Hybridity And Cosmopolitanism: New Muslim Intellectuals On Globalization, Carool Kersten Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
This essay explores those Muslim discourses on the phenomenon of globalization which distinguish themselves by not succumbing to the antagonism guiding Huntington’s ‘clash of civilization’ thesis (1996) or Benjamin Barber’s account of ‘Jihad vs. McWorld’ (1995), either through the ‘blind imitation’(taqlid) characterising the unquestioned preservation of the classical Islamic heritage by traditionalist Muslims or through the atavistic return to the supposed pristine Islam of the ‘Pious Ancestors’ (salaf) of revivalist (fundamentalist) respondents. Combining an intimate familiarity with the heritage of Muslim civilization with a solid knowledge of recent achievements of the Western academe in the human sciences, the ‘new Muslim …
