Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

The authors analyzed the narrative writings of four counselors-in-training in practicum using directed content analysis. Developmental themes corresponded to current theories of counselor development. Narratives and supervisor responses are sequentially provided to aid new counselors and supervisors in understanding the complexities of counselor developmental and counselor supervision.

In a counselor’s development, supervision is a necessary and integral part of the process to forming a professional counseling identity. Just as multiple counseling theories exist to provide a conceptual framework for the process, so too do multiple supervision theories exist to help guide the supervision experience. Based upon the work of Carl Rogers, a person-centered approach to supervision centers on two main themes: the process and the relationship (Rice, 1980). As a diversified financial service provider and the largest United States bank holding company, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) is supervised by multiple regulatory agencies. JPM’s commercial bank subsidiaries hold a national charter and therefore are regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). Since the bank’s Chief Investment Office (CIO) invested the surplus deposits of JPM’s commercial bank units, the OCC was also CIO’s primary regulator. Gatekeeping In Master’S Level Rehabilitation Counseling Programs: An Exploratory Study, Allison Levine, Connie Sung, Alicia Strain

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

The current study explores attitudes and procedures of gatekeeping in rehabilitation counseling programs. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the current study explores underlying causes for a lack of gatekeeping discussion and action in rehabilitation counseling. Rehabilitation educators and program directors from both CORE and CACREP-accredited rehabilitation counseling programs participated in the online Gatekeeping Attitudes and Procedures Survey (GAPS). Results indicate that, while attitudes towards gatekeeping were positive, programs lack formalized procedures. TPB aids in understanding that attitudes towards gatekeeping may not influence educator behavior on the matter. Implications include further research into this area to better understand the …

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

Multilingual diversity is increasing in the United States, with Spanish being the nation’s second most common spoken language (U.S. Census, 2016). In response, more Spanish-speaking bilingual counselors are providing bilingual counseling services. These counselors face unique experiences related to the constellation of language, culture, and professional development. Yet, supervisors are working with these counselors and little is known about their experiences or specific supervision strategies. This article presents the results of interviews with supervisors (N=8) of Spanish-speaking bilingual counselors regarding their supervision strategies. Implications for supervisors are provided.
