One of the most fruitful collaborative relationships a library can have is with its Friends of the Library organization, providing that group is vibrant and progressive. This article provides insight into the history of the Friends of the Library group at a regional comprehensive university since its founding in 1962 to nearly becoming defunct in 2015. The steps taken in the transformation of the Friends of the Library since then from an inactive group with no clear direction, to a robust organization with an active board who have identified goals and strategies for successful library advocacy are described. Since 2011, Vancouver Foundation has invested significant time, energy, ideas, and money in bringing together immigrant and refugee youth and young people with lived experience of the foster care system in British Columbia.

Through its Fostering Change and Fresh Voices initiatives, the foundation has listened and worked in partnership with these young people to address the issues that affect their lives, and important progress has been made in the forms of meaningful policy changes and improved political engagement. The foundation is now in the process of returning these initiatives to the communities that inspired them.

The William & Mary Educational Review

This paper explores empathy, humanism, and mindfulness in regard to multicultural and social justice counseling competence. An overview of each concept is provided along with theoretical convergences with multiculturalism, and relevant research is presented. Findings based on theory and research indicate that a humanistic stance, empathy, and mindfulness are beneficial and possibly essential for both providing effective multicultural counseling and doing social justice work. Acceptance-Based Behavioral Therapies (ABBTs) are discussed in relation to working with diverse populations, and findings are promising.
