The Art Of Interpretive Dialogue: An Ontology Of Human Experience And The Emergence Of Meaning In Everyday Life, Sophia N. Gallagher
The Art Of Interpretive Dialogue: An Ontology Of Human Experience And The Emergence Of Meaning In Everyday Life, Sophia N. Gallagher
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
With the ultimate intention of seeking a kind of dialogue that facilitates personal, relational, and collective growth and may be practiced in our everyday lives, this paper examines the fundamental role of interpretation and communication in all human experience. The overall work is positioned at the intersection of Philosophical Hermeneutics and Interpersonal Communication, and begins with an ontology of human experience as the inextricable relation between the experiencer and what is experienced, contextually situated as temporal and embodied, and conditioned by the three interrelated processes of affect, understanding, and discourse as they are mediated by an unique constitutive framework. The …

Using "Choice" To Measure The Availability And Use Of E-Books, Amanda L. Scott, Rickey D. Best
Using "Choice" To Measure The Availability And Use Of E-Books, Amanda L. Scott, Rickey D. Best
The Southeastern Librarian
As e-books have come to hold a major impact on library collection building activities, the influence of reviews of titles and the on-going conversion of titles to a digital format have significant potential impacts for libraries. Reviewing tools such as Choice and the lag-time between publication notice of the print edition of a work and its corresponding e-version asks the questions, “How many of the print titles that are reviewed in Choice have a corresponding e-version ready for purchase?” and “How used are those e-versions in comparison with print?”
A Risk Assessment Study At The University Of South Alabama Libraries, Richard J. Wood, Mary Duffy
A Risk Assessment Study At The University Of South Alabama Libraries, Richard J. Wood, Mary Duffy
The Southeastern Librarian
Prior to receiving a memorandum from the Director of Risk Management that the libraries would be included in a university-wide risk assessment study, the authors’ only contacts with the director had to do with art works housed in the library and the amount of money kept on-hand at the service desks. We believed that the Risk Assessment Office was primarily concerned with highly vulnerable programs such as the hospitals, pharmacies, athletics, the bookstore, and laboratories. The challenge for us now would be to develop a comprehensive assessment of risks in library facilities and operations from acquisitions and cataloging to circulation, …

The State Of African Economy And A Way Forward, Florian Cyril Mshanga
The State Of African Economy And A Way Forward, Florian Cyril Mshanga
Young African Leaders Journal of Development
The current emerging market downturn in economic powerhouses like China, has already negatively affected African economic growth. For resource-rich countries, it is a chance to improve their public investment management (PIM) system, which could help boost growth; although from experience drawn, Sub-Saharan oil resourced countries on average score lower in PIM, reflecting weak administrative capacity and low transparency in the use of public resources, especially at the project appraisal and evaluation stages of the PIM process. Countries that have successfully diversified their economies will suffer less than those that have not and they will enjoy less stress than countries depending …
The Impact Of Oil Price On Ghana's Inflation, Albert Mcbell Ninepence
The Impact Of Oil Price On Ghana's Inflation, Albert Mcbell Ninepence
Young African Leaders Journal of Development
World oil price is a momentous determinant of global economic performance. In most cases, when oil prices skyrockets, it leads to a transfer of income from importing countries to exporting countries through trade shifts. The link between oil and inflation is mostly seen as being correlational. The direct relationship between oil and inflation was evident in the 1970’s nevertheless this relationship started to deteriorate after the 1980’s. Quite a cornucopia of researchers have made relentless inquiry on the macroeconomics impact of world oil price shocks and hikes on economic growth and consumer price inflation on importing countries. Also, an infinitesimal …

Cueing The Customer Using Nudges And Negative Option Marketing, Clarence W. Vonbergen, Courtney Kernek, Martin S. Bressler, Lawrence S. Silver
Atlantic Marketing Journal
Abstract
Nudges—subtle, covert, and often unobtrusive interventions that take advantage of individuals’ mental shortcuts and biases—frequently change the context of people’s choices and in so doing influence individual and societal behavior. They have become fashionable in recent years, and the ability of such phenomena to bring about significant change for relatively little cost has captured the imagination of governments and businesses. One simple yet potent nudge empowered by the status-quo bias that has received increased attention involves default rules which specify the condition imposed on persons when they fail to make a decision or choice. Marketers have used default options …

Motivations In The Fine-Art Market: A Self-Determination Theory Approach, Jonathan P. Leavell
Atlantic Marketing Journal
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the theoretical value of incorporating constructs from self-determination theory (SDT) into the analysis of the motivations within the fine-art market. The motivations of buyers and artists are examined in light of a controlling-informational event gradient. Moureau’s and Sagot-Duvauroux’ (2012) artist business-model framework is used to provide the context for marketing’s role in facilitating communication along the various motivational interactions of the gradient. Opportunities for further research are presented.

This study examines …

The Effect Of Advertorial Format And Copy Length On Attitudes Of Female (Target) And Male (Non-Target) Audiences, Cynthia B. Hanson
Atlantic Marketing Journal
This study investigates the effect of the advertorial format and ad copy length on ad and brand attitude. Results of a 2 (advertorial versus non-advertorial) by 2 (light versus moderate copy length) study indicate that the advertorial format generated more favorable ad and brand attitudes for the female (target) subjects, but less favorable attitudes for the male (non-target) subjects. A marginally significant gender by copy length interaction suggests a differential effect of copy length for the male sample, as well: ad and brand attitudes were higher for lighter copy ads for the female sample but lower for the male sample. …

When Your Teachers Fail You: The Necessity Of Improving Teachers Training For Quality Education In Cameroon, Monique Kwachou
Young African Leaders Journal of Development
With the underlying hypothesis that the quality of a teachers’ training is directly proportional to the quality of education pupils eventually receive, this essay explores and critiques the basic education teacher training process in Cameroon, using two notable educational theories to assess the possibility of quality education resulting from Cameroonian government-trained basic education teachers. It was found that there is dire need to improve the quality of teachers we train to ensure that they can deliver the quality of education we seek. A brief outline of suggestions is made towards improving the flawed training system.

Women have been oppressed overtime in most societies. Statistics continue to project increasing rates of various acts of gender based violence such as domestic violence, sexual violence, cultural and economic abuse and so on. These acts of abuse are accelerated by several factors pertinent to our social systems such as culture, patriarchy and the Law. Using Kenya as a case study, this paper examines how these three factors contribute to differential gender treatment. …

Attention is then turned to the context of the Christian faith and available theological frameworks that can be a basis for response to sexual violence. The last part of this paper looks at the ability of the Christian church to mobilise communities and harness …

On Being An Entrepreneur: The Nigerian Perspective, Olayinka K. Binuomoyo
Young African Leaders Journal of Development
It is common knowledge that the success of an economy rests on the strength of its entrepreneurs. Present-day challenges make it imperative for countries in the same bracket as Nigeria to deemphasize reliance on oil and government for social crumbs, to embrace innovative activities and deepen small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs). SMEs are important drivers of economic growth but they face significant challenges as obtained in Nigeria where infrastructures such as power, transportation and financing needed to make entrepreneurship work seldom exists.
