We live in an era of unprecedented scholarly productivity and vastly improved scholarly communication. Academic researchers today have immediate access to an immense volume of scholarly articles and research data that would have amazed a researchers of 25 years ago. This presentation will consider how almost 10,000 pictures from the Chicano/Mexicano farming communities of the Upper Rio Grande Valley of Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico can contribute and alter the narrative of farm working. This digital collection documents over 30 years of farming with acequias, or communal irrigation canals, and captures themes of food production, the care of the land and environment, and water management. In a time where large-scale agribusiness is fomented by Monsanto chemicals and seed control, these farmers work to maintain acequia agriculture. When the library first became involved with the Affordable Learning $olutions (AL$) initiative, a strategic decision was made to focus our efforts on providing faculty with the information they needed to incorporate affordable learning materials into their courses. Initially, three face-to-face workshops were offered with great success. However, time constraints on faculty was limiting participation. The decision was made by AL$ coordinators to restructure the workshop into an online format.

Increasingly clinical doctors desire and need to publish their research. As a result, the issue of open access is moving into the clinical setting. This presents unique challenges to Health Science Librarians. In addition to working alone and with very limited library budgets, Health Science Librarians must stretch their current role to include becoming an open access expert in order to educate hospital administrators and library users, while giving proper advice and guidance to authors within their institutions. Economic inequity is a pervasive aspect of the population of California State University (CSU) students. There are significant differences in the ability of our students to afford the total cost of their CSU education. Not only are they afforded less access to educational materials, but they also may be disadvantaged in knowing how to take advantage of those resources.

California’s three public higher education systems (University of California, California State University, the California Community College System) enroll nearly 3 million undergraduate students and employ almost 100 thousand faculty. In 2012, the California State Legislature directed the three systems to create an online library of open educational resources to encourage the use of free or affordable textbooks and other materials throughout California’s public higher education system. Portland State University’s Reducing Student Costs Initiative is a broad-based effort to reduce student textbook and course materials costs. The search for alternatives to high priced textbooks endures. The librarians at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, with the help of an IMLS Sparks! Ignition grant, decided to jump into the fray by creating the Open Access Course Reserves. It is a publicly available, curated repository that provides ready-made reading lists of free, copyright compliant (open access when possible), educational materials. Today's students need to locate, use and share information in myriad formats; they need to be ICT (information and communication technology) literacy. The CSU system has started an ICT Literacy Initiative to build out the MERLOT collection of ICT literacy learning objects, and to help faculty integrate ICT literacy into their curricula. California State University's (CSU) Affordable Learning Solutions initiative has produced a number of system-wide strategies, technologies and campus-based programs that are driving down the cost of course materials for students while offering greater access to no-cost or low-cost academic content for instructional faculty. In this presentation, Dr. Hanley, Assistant Vice Chancellor at California State University, Chancellor's Office, will focus on the variety of free resources to support teaching and learning via the CSU’s Affordable Learning Solutions initiative. The different deployment strategies used by CSU campuses will be showcased and approaches to motivating faculty and administration will be discussed.
