How Unique Is Milwaukee’S 53206? An Examination Of Disaggregated Socioeconomic Characteristics Across The City And Beyond, Scott W. Hegerty Nov 2019

How Unique Is Milwaukee’S 53206? An Examination Of Disaggregated Socioeconomic Characteristics Across The City And Beyond, Scott W. Hegerty

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium

Milwaukee’s 53206 ZIP code, located on the city’s near North Side, has drawn considerable attention for its poverty and incarceration rates, as well as for its large proportion of vacant properties. As a result, it has been the subject of academic studies, considerable news reporting, and even a documentary; it has benefited from targeted policies at the city level. Targeting specific ZIP codes, rather than other types of geographic area can raise certain issues, however. In particular, these areas were created for mail delivery rather than to facilitate socieoeconomic analysis, and they often aggregate diverse urban areas that sometimes cover …

Which Sectors Hold The Key To India's Future Economic Growth?, Hardik A. Marfatia Nov 2019

Which Sectors Hold The Key To India's Future Economic Growth?, Hardik A. Marfatia

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Symposium

This paper explores sectors that hold the key to India's future economic growth. The forecasts of economic growth from an autoregressive distributed lag model with stock market sectoral indices are analyzed against the benchmark autoregressive model forecasts across several forecast horizons. Results show that the information from sectoral indices improves forecasts of economic growth. However, the forecast superiority is not uniform across sectors and horizons. Auto, consumers' spending, material, metal, oil and gas, and realty sectors provide the most forecasting gains. In contrast, bankex, capital goods, finance, and industrial sectors provide superior forecasts only at horizons above one year. FMCG …

Growth, Sprawl, And The Contradictions Of Capitalism: San Diego Suburbs And The Speculative Frenzy, 1970-1991, Richard Hogan Nov 2019

Growth, Sprawl, And The Contradictions Of Capitalism: San Diego Suburbs And The Speculative Frenzy, 1970-1991, Richard Hogan

Purdue GIS Day

San Diego has become the most beautiful place where nobody can afford to live because speculative growth drives housing prices regardless of the level of supply or demand. How this happened in San Diego County is fairly clear. Marx explained that ground rents (and thereby land prices) increase when capital and labor are invested in the most valuable land and when investment is intensive, with vast amounts of labor and capital focused on the high yield properties to the virtual exclusion of less productive or less valuable lands. In fact, speculative growth between 1960 and 1980 conformed to what Marx …

Future And Value: The Library As Strategic Partner, Antje Mays Oct 2019

Future And Value: The Library As Strategic Partner, Antje Mays

Charleston Library Conference

Broader economic trends spawn budget pressures for education and libraries, prompting a plethora of studies on the value and relevance of libraries. Numerous reports on economic decline in libraries and studies with mixed pronouncements on the value of libraries have led to a negative self-image within the library profession. Yet libraries’ leadership in connecting learners to knowledge is at the heart of producing many of the key skills sorely needed in robust societies and economies. Librarianship has many untapped opportunities for positioning itself as a prominent strategic partner. This paper outlines current research on the economic and societal context for …

Fiscal Citizenship: How Can Tax Efficiency And Isonomy Aid In The Promotion Of Economic Rights, Social Participation, Political Accountability, And Cultural Diversity?, Gustavo Voeroes Dénes Oct 2019

Fiscal Citizenship: How Can Tax Efficiency And Isonomy Aid In The Promotion Of Economic Rights, Social Participation, Political Accountability, And Cultural Diversity?, Gustavo Voeroes Dénes

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

According to the World Inequality Report 2018 (WID 2017), Brazil is one of the few countries that has not recently displayed an increase in income inequality, having instead sustained it on persistently very high levels, actually composing the world’s “inequality frontier”. While such levels of inequality may be partly attributed to poor distribution of property rights, human capital endowments, and specificity of labor relations, a significant part of it is undoubtedly due the national fiscal system’s reduced distributive capacity, compromised by one the worst taxation systems in the world. Occupying the 184th position out of 190 countries in the World …

Innovative Collaboration To Further Community Self-Determination, Matthew Currie, Amaha Sellassie Oct 2019

Innovative Collaboration To Further Community Self-Determination, Matthew Currie, Amaha Sellassie

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

The built urban environment is the product of more than a century of policy decisions that have both intentionally discriminated and have had the effect of discriminating, against African Americas, immigrants, the work class, low income individuals and other undesirables. While more than fifty years have passed since the passage of civil rights legislation in the United States, individuals in today’s cities are living out our discriminatory legacy.

In Dayton, Ohio, a new movement has risen from the community to disrupt the legacy of de jure and de facto discrimination by the collaborative efforts of the impactive individuals, neighborhood leaders, …

Human Rights And Economic Democracy: Reinvigorating The Human Rights Movement, Curtis T. Kline Oct 2019

Human Rights And Economic Democracy: Reinvigorating The Human Rights Movement, Curtis T. Kline

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

A 2018 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that in order to avoid a seemingly inevitable ecological collapse that would bring intense suffering especially on the most marginalized and excluded sectors; the world needs to develop “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society”. There are many local experiences which demonstrate the possibilities of achieving these needed changes. There are a number of community organizations and associations, social movements, and municipal efforts, among others, with creative visions on this front. In Jackson, Mississippi, for example, Cooperation Jackson strives to be a means …

The Effect Of Economic Downturns On Mortality Rates, Bethany Koch Jun 2019

The Effect Of Economic Downturns On Mortality Rates, Bethany Koch

Celebration of Learning

My research attempts to show the effect that economic downturns have on overall mortality rates in the United States. I compare mortality rates for several states from 2000 to 2010, attempting to find a pattern in the individual states of lower mortality rates subsequent to the 2008 recession. I do so by running a regression equation to find any sign of correlations.

Reinventing The Wheel: Comparing Family Friendly Vegas And Adult Friendly Vegas Revenue Growth, James Vaughn May 2019

Reinventing The Wheel: Comparing Family Friendly Vegas And Adult Friendly Vegas Revenue Growth, James Vaughn

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The one constant for Las Vegas is change, always looking for the Next Big Thing™. In the 1990s, Las Vegas engaged in a grand experiment: roller coasters, amusement parks, family pools and shows. In the 2000s, Las Vegas reinvented itself back to its roots: condo not amusement parks, sensual not swashbuckling shows, topless European ultra-pools not kiddie pools. While the house always wins, did the casinos of the 1990s or 2000s beat the ultimate house, going beyond nominal revenue growth into the jackpot of real revenue growth?

The Unpredictable Positive Effects Of Sports Gambling: Gamblers Think Losing Feels Worse Than It Actually Feels, Guy Voichek, Nathan Novemsky May 2019

The Unpredictable Positive Effects Of Sports Gambling: Gamblers Think Losing Feels Worse Than It Actually Feels, Guy Voichek, Nathan Novemsky

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Implications statement

Gamblers underestimate how much fun small wagers add to enjoying sports events. They think losing will feel worse than it really does. Simple reminder can correct this misprediction.

Abstract

When considering whether to gamble on a sporting event, people may ask themselves how winning or losing will affect their experience. In a series of four experiments, we find that people under-appreciate the positive effect of gambling on watching sporting events, in a way that causes them to under-value the opportunity to place a small stakes gamble. While participants predict that a gamble will enhance or diminish an experience …

Does Near Win Affect People's Investment Behavior?, Jia Yuan May 2019

Does Near Win Affect People's Investment Behavior?, Jia Yuan

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Near win is a special kind of failure that comes closely to actual success. It shows up frequently in people’s investment behavior. Only a few studies have researched on the relation between near win and its impact on the future investment. And in the literature, there are conflicting results on this issue. In this paper, we examine the effect of near win on people’s investment amount by exploiting a unique panel individual level lottery purchase data with over 100,000 players which trace each of their purchases for several months. We find that people who have experienced a near win would …

Iq And Gambling Consumption: An Analysis Of Horse Race Betting Participation And Expenditure Using Individual-Level Data, Niko Suhonen, Tuomo Kainulainen, Jani Saastamoinen, David Forrest Prof.

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

Abstract

Recent literature suggests that intelligence is positively associated with economic outcomes involving risky decisions such as investment portfolio returns (Grinblatt et al. 2012). Gambling is a form of entertainment in which consumers buy risky products with negative expected values. However, the relationship between intelligence and gambling consumption is not understood yet. We use a unique individual-level data set from Finland to investigate how intelligence predicts gambling participation and expenditure. Our data consists of betting data from a monopoly horse race betting operator (betting participation and expenditure on betting), background information on the Finnish adult population from Statistics Finland (e.g. …

Public Interests And Economic Regulation Of Gambling, Rein Halbersma, Joost Poort May 2019

Public Interests And Economic Regulation Of Gambling, Rein Halbersma, Joost Poort

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

In the Netherlands, the Betting and Gaming Act from 1964 largely determines the current structure of gambling markets. The policy was to channel consumers to a limited number of licensed operators. This led to state-owned monopolies for lotteries, sports betting and casinos, a private monopoly for horse race betting, a limited number of privately owned charity lotteries, and a large number of private slot machines operators.

Pending legislation proposes an online market without a limit on the number of operators. Furthermore, state ownership will be phased out, and introduced legislation to privatizing and expanding the number of casinos. The current …

In Search Of Equilibrium – How Regulatory Changes Impact The Gambling Industry In Poland, Sebastian Meitz, Stanisław Pogorzelski, Przemysław Bloch May 2019

In Search Of Equilibrium – How Regulatory Changes Impact The Gambling Industry In Poland, Sebastian Meitz, Stanisław Pogorzelski, Przemysław Bloch

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The so-called Polish “gambling affair” of 2009 resulted in the adoption of a new Act on Gambling. The regulation significantly changed the legal environment in Poland. It was also the starting point of what we identified as the search of equilibrium - a number of further legislative changes aimed at creating a sustainable environment for gambling. Some market segments became delegalized, some monopolized, and others liberalized. The Polish Ministry of Finance and the parliament tried to find the right balance between consumer protection, business growth, and government revenue. A goal that is still to be achieved.

This article examines the …

What Is A Game Of Chance? An Application To Loot Boxes, Wessel Oomens May 2019

What Is A Game Of Chance? An Application To Loot Boxes, Wessel Oomens

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

The traditional landscape of games of chance such as lotteries, betting, casinos and slots has become intertwined with complex financial products as well as digital games with elements of chance.

The Netherlands Gambling Authority has issued a guidance paper outlining a five-step decision process in order to determine whether a game classifies as gambling:

  • Threshold: is the number of providers, players and the amount money involved considerable enough to warrant spending resources in assessing the game?
  • Overlap: is there potential overlap with other rules and regulations, in particular those governing financial products?
  • Prize: does the game award its winners with …

Gambling Behavior In Controlled Laboratory Experiments, Don Ross, J. Todd Swarthout May 2019

Gambling Behavior In Controlled Laboratory Experiments, Don Ross, J. Todd Swarthout

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

We designed a slot machine interface to study gambling behavior over real monetary amounts in a controlled laboratory environment. The interface allowed us to study the effect of multiple playlines compared to single playlines, the use of abstract tokens instead of allowing the gambler to see expenditures and payoffs in a natural currency, the effect of “near miss” displays on subjective beliefs about the chances of winning, and the effect of “wins disguised as losses” on gambling behavior. We measured the risk preferences of each subject, allowing for probability weighting and loss aversion, as well as the evolution of subjective …

A Schumpeterian Approach To Examine The Development Boundary Of Casino Tourism, Ricado C. S. Siu, Joey P. U. Sou May 2019

A Schumpeterian Approach To Examine The Development Boundary Of Casino Tourism, Ricado C. S. Siu, Joey P. U. Sou

International Conference on Gambling & Risk Taking

In The Theory of Economic Development, Joseph Schumpeter ([1934] 1983, Chapter II) explicates how the dynamic role of innovative mindset and ability of entrepreneurs, through introducing new methods of production and new economic commodities, leads up to the expansion of the boundary for economic/industrial development.

By following Schumpeter’s approach, we explore the development boundary of casino tourism. Through a post facto analysis of the hard evidences derived across the world (e.g., Las Vegas, Macao and Singapore) since the 1980s, the dimensions of innovation to the development boundary of casino tourism are scrutinized and explicated. Besides, we uncovered that the …

Comparing Tax Structures In Washington And Oregon: Tax Burden Impacts On Grocery Consumption, Devin Bales, Colin Gibson May 2019

Comparing Tax Structures In Washington And Oregon: Tax Burden Impacts On Grocery Consumption, Devin Bales, Colin Gibson

Student Research Symposium

Washington and Oregon states rely on different tax systems. Washington collects sales tax but no personal income tax, while Oregon collects a personal income tax but no sales tax. These differences create an opportunity to measure the effects of tax policy on consumer spending. Previous literature has estimated the effect of border tax differences on aggregate spending patterns. This paper uses a hierarchical model to measure the effect of individual sales tax burden on individual-level spending. First, using data from the Consumer Expenditure survey, we estimate individual sales tax burden. Then, using these estimates in a second-stage regression simulation model, …

High Reliability In A Constrained Environment, Isaac Rhea Apr 2019

High Reliability In A Constrained Environment, Isaac Rhea

Student Research Symposium

This paper seeks to understand the effects of formal and informal constraints on the operations and success of Highly Reliable Teams. Constraints reduce the risks that are inherently present during missions, but formal constraints, such as policies and standard operating procedures, are limited by the ability of regulators and teams to anticipate problems. Culture, social norms, and other informal constraints are not subject to the same limitation, and develop over time to support the process of complex problem solving in emergency response situations.

The Role Of Income Inequality As A Predictor Of Per Capita Gross Domestic Product, Daniel Friedberg Apr 2019

The Role Of Income Inequality As A Predictor Of Per Capita Gross Domestic Product, Daniel Friedberg

Student Scholar Showcase

The role of income inequality in relation to gross domestic product is of great importance in modern time. Income inequality is a pressing phenomenon in the fields of economics, politics, and sociology, while Gross Domestic Product is the benchmark statistic in measuring the health of any economy. But how well does income inequality serve as a predictor for the level of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) GDP per capita within a nation? This cross-sectional study determines that the GINI Index has no significant statistical relationship with PPP GDP per capita level. While income inequality is a major economic variable that contributes …

Socioeconomic Influences On Property Crime Rates: A Study In Virginia's Counties, Mary Passley Apr 2019

Socioeconomic Influences On Property Crime Rates: A Study In Virginia's Counties, Mary Passley

Student Scholar Showcase

Most research on factors and causes of crime, whether property or violent crime, focuses on individuals’ behavior or their surrounding environment. In this research, I explore the idea of socioeconomic factors correlated to property crime. I conducted a retrospective design to fully explore United States Census data and crime data gathered by the Bureau of Justice Statistics to discover statistically significant variables connected to property crime. Significant findings were shown by average people per house and retail sales per capita in all counties. Additional significant findings were percent employment change and percent with high school degree or higher in low …

The Fairness Of Fair Trade: An Analysis Of The Economics Of Fair Trade, Duke C. Schillaci, Julia R. Norgaard

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

In 2015, a study done by Cone Communications found that millennials are "universally more engaged in corporate social responsibility." In fact, 87% of millennials are willing to purchase a product with social or environmental benefits. Enter, the fair trade label. The fair trade label, which is attached to products which meet the previously mentioned consumer demands, has emerged over the last three decades. Products like organic produce, textiles, and natural commodities have entered into global retailers and supermarkets through these non-traditional distribution channels, supported by increased consumption as well as changing consumer preferences. In order to uncover the underlying economic …

Neoliberal Urbanism As ‘Strategic Coupling’ To Global Chains: Port Infrastructure And The Role Of Economic Impact Studies, David Jaffee Feb 2019

Neoliberal Urbanism As ‘Strategic Coupling’ To Global Chains: Port Infrastructure And The Role Of Economic Impact Studies, David Jaffee

Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity

Abstract This paper identifies and delineates a variant of neoliberal urbanism that grounds city-region economic development on the ability to gain financial and public support for large-scale infrastructure projects advancing particular forms of capital accumulation. More specifically, the focus is on the effort of city-regions to strategically exploit and expand geographic and physical assets to capture economic benefits associated with global value chains through the expansion of maritime ports. This development strategy requires sizable public investments in port infrastructure. In order to justify and convince the public and political officials of the wisdom of such investments, port officials commission economic …

“The Current Crisis Of Us Neoliberal Capitalism And Prospects For A New ‘Social Structure Of Accumulation’.”, David Jaffee Feb 2019

“The Current Crisis Of Us Neoliberal Capitalism And Prospects For A New ‘Social Structure Of Accumulation’.”, David Jaffee

Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity

Wage squeeze/profit squeeze crisis theories provide a powerful framework for the historical analysis of US capitalist crises and the alternating demand-side and supply-side social structures of accumulation (SSA). However, the current neoliberal SSA would seem to defy the logic of this model in its persistence in the face of a deep financial crisis and a failure to realize its espoused objectives. This paper reviews this theoretical model of economic crises, its relationship to and viability alongside the rise and establishment of neoliberalism, and some of the political and economic obstacles that would seem to prevent the construction of a new …
