Determinants Of Parking Fees On College Campuses, Hannah Huckeby
Determinants Of Parking Fees On College Campuses, Hannah Huckeby
Posters-at-the-Capitol
The price of parking has recently been a hot topic around the Murray area, especially among the college students. Due to the drastic increase in parking pass prices there has been an abundant amount of discussion surrounding this idea of parking being a public good. Many individuals have been outraged which has brought up the questions of why there is a price tag on something that many people consider a public good. With that being said, this paper is going to take a deeper look into parking specifically pertaining to college campuses but also in the cities surrounding these institutions. …
Hydroelectric Management On The Rio Chama: Balancing Competing Ecological Priorities, Suzanne Stradling
Hydroelectric Management On The Rio Chama: Balancing Competing Ecological Priorities, Suzanne Stradling
Shared Knowledge Conference
Management of dammed river systems is a complex problem. Spatial and temporal impacts result in complex system trade-offs, and shareholders have competing objectives. Dynamic modeling can provide improved information as decision-makers attempt to optimize the value of river flows. This research models the direct and indirect economic impacts of a small reservoir-dam-river system and applies this framework to an existing Bureau of Reclamation dam and generator in the upper Rio Grande basin. Over past decades, concerns for river habitat preservation have reduced the production of peak-demand energy from hydroelectric plants. Over the same period, as U.S. power markets incorporate solar …

The Effects Rebuilding The Century Link Stadium On Residential Property Values In King County Washington, Michael Hensley
The Effects Rebuilding The Century Link Stadium On Residential Property Values In King County Washington, Michael Hensley
Shared Knowledge Conference
The price tags associated with building sports centers have been ever increasing over the twentieth century, and with increases in those prices come increases in the public funding and subsidies required to fund them. Sports centers have been credited with having the potential of increasing tourism, employment, and public pride in metropolitan areas. However, the research has mostly shown negligible or adverse effects. We use a hedonic difference in difference approach to determine the effect of building the Century Link Field, a multi-purpose stadium in Seattle, Washington. We find that the building of the stadium was associated with an increase …
The Critical Need For Mental Health Education To Be Mandated In New Mexico's Public Schools, Bonnie L. Murphy
The Critical Need For Mental Health Education To Be Mandated In New Mexico's Public Schools, Bonnie L. Murphy
Shared Knowledge Conference
Based on a review of research and best practices in mental health awareness and skills, this inquiry project argues for state legislative policies that would require mental health awareness and skills in the K-12 curriculum. Mental health affects individual accomplishments in every stage of people’s lives beginning in early childhood and throughout the life cycle. Prevention and treatment of mental illness plays a key role in the ability of an individual to cope with loss and develop resiliency and perseverance in challenging times and to make better decisions that improve the individual’s life and the lives of those around them. …

8.2 Conflict, Food And Water Security In Ethiopia, Desalegn Dagnew
International Conference on African Development
Ethiopia and its people are kind and hospitable to all humanity irrespective of race, tribe, ethnicity, religion or creed. It has been, and still is, a refuge to hundreds of thousands of people who seek shelter and safety. The world knows Ethiopians as people who love their country and who do not hesitate to defend it by giving their dear lives, as was the case during the fascist Italian invasions of 1895 and 1936 where thousands of Ethiopians died fighting to preserve Ethiopia’s identity as the only country in Africa that has never been ruled by a European colonial power. …
2.2 Household Shocks And Child Labor: Evidence From A Panel Survey Of Nigerian Households, Wei-Chiao Huang, Kofi Acheampong
2.2 Household Shocks And Child Labor: Evidence From A Panel Survey Of Nigerian Households, Wei-Chiao Huang, Kofi Acheampong
International Conference on African Development
This paper studies the effects of household shocks on child labor and school enrollment. We used data from a two-year panel data set of Nigerian households surveyed between 2010/2011 and 2012/2013. We found that agricultural shocks, measured as crop and livestock losses, increase child labor hours and decrease the probability that a child will enroll in school. We also found that health shocks to men increase child labor hours. In contrast, health shocks to women have no impact on child labor hours and school enrollment.

The Relationship Between Information And Communication Technology, Financial Development, Electricity Consumption And Economic Growth In Oecd Countries: A Panel Investigation, Olawumi Osundina
Andrews Research Conference
This study attempts to investigate the dynamic relationship between information and communication technology (ICT), electricity consumption (EC), real gross domestic product per capita (GDPC) and financial development (FD) for selected sixteen OECD countries in a balanced framework between the periods of 1990 and 2014. This paper employs relatively new panel estimation techniques that accounts for heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependency in order to enable robust estimates and avoid spurious analysis. Empirical evidences reveal that there is cross-sectional dependency among the countries investigated as shown by Pesaran (2004). Thus, this current study proceeds to second generation panel econometrics techniques for reliable and …
Does Winning Eurovision Impact A Country's Economy?, Kendall Bard
Does Winning Eurovision Impact A Country's Economy?, Kendall Bard
EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationship that winning Eurovision has on several different economic metrics in a particular country. Drawing between 100 and 600 million viewers every year, The Eurovision Song Contest is the longest-running televised singing competition in the world, and has occurred annually since 1956. Furthermore, Eurovision is the most popular international televised event, other than sporting events such as the Olympics and the World Cup. Despite this, limited research has been completed on Eurovision’s economic impact specifically. For this thesis, data on various economic indicators was collected through the World Bank’s World Development …
The Pricing Impact Of The Decreasing Competitiveness Of The Health Insurance Market, Lauren N. Patterson
The Pricing Impact Of The Decreasing Competitiveness Of The Health Insurance Market, Lauren N. Patterson
EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement
The Affordable Care Act created the national insurance exchanges of qualified health plans to encourage a higher insured rate, larger risk pools, and lower prices for quality health coverage. Consolidation of insurers can have opposing effects. The insurers’ risk pools will grow, allowing insurers to better hedge for risk. However, consolidation decreases the prevalence of competition in the market, and past research shows that insurer consolidation decreases market competition and increases prices.
I examine how the number of plans offered in a set market, pricing components, and county health variables impact the monthly premium pricing of plans sold on the …

Redd+ Policy Preferences In Ethiopia: Developing Controls For Attribute Non-Attendance In Choice Experiment Data, Adam Rovang, Sahan T.M. Dissanayake, Randall Bluffstone
Student Research Symposium
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) is a payment for ecosystem services system created under the UN to reduce deforestation and degradation in developing countries. The REDD+ program creates markets for carbon sequestration services where REDD+ buyers are in UN-FCCC Annex 1 countries (developed countries) and sellers are in non-Annex 1 (typically developing countries). About 25% of the world’s forests are community managed (three times as much as private forests) but there is limited knowledge and information on preferences of households in communities with community managed forests toward programs like REDD+. Further, we do not have a good …
Females Are More Accepting Of Intimate Partner Violence Than Males, Internationally, Anna R. Eckenrode
Females Are More Accepting Of Intimate Partner Violence Than Males, Internationally, Anna R. Eckenrode
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
What factors shift the social norms of acceptance of intimate partner violence within couples? I address this broad question using global Demographic Health Survey (DHS) data on attitudes toward intimate partner violence. Much of the existing research in this field only examines female acceptance without analyzing the dynamics within a couple. I determine females are more accepting of intimate partner violence than males, regardless of cultural context and time, in an exploration of new stylized facts. I find existing theory and conclusions about female acceptance of violence can be expanded on when considering total male acceptance levels within a couple. …

Using Monetary Incentives To Motivate Female Entrepreneurs In Abuja, Nigeria, Imuetinyan Aiguwurhuo
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
Gender gaps in entrepreneurship are a major problem everywhere, but especially in developing countries like Nigeria. Women across the world face high levels of discrimination. The process of empowering women in a society has the potential to boost economic growth and development. Inspired by the success of the Family Independence Initiative (FII), we designed a field experiment to estimate the impact of using monetary incentives to motivate female entrepreneurs in achieving their goals in collaboration with the National Center for Women development (NCWD) in Abuja, Nigeria

Causes, Effects, And Possible Solutions To Blood Feuding In Albania, Gabe Cyrus, Kelly Fischer, Jessica Stricker, Abigail O'Neel, Celeste Davis
The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)
The goal of this presentation is to inform the audience about the causes, effects, and possible solutions of blood feuding in Albania, which has resulted in the deaths of approximately 12,100 people since 1991. Albania contains one of the few remaining cultures that is still partaking in blood feuding. Blood feuding began in the 1600s and resumed after the fall of communism in the absence of a strong governing body. The Kanun sets forth the rules of blood feuding, but they are not always followed as they were intended. Cultural values influence the course of blood feuding and make it …

Abstract
The Marijuana Policy Group created an economic impact model for the marijuana industry in Colorado that analyzed its effects on the state's economy. There are other models that predict how many jobs will be created by the marijuana industry but nothing that predicts the unemployment rate. My research branches off that impact model and drives it in one direction. This project synthesizes the very little information we have about the marijuana industry and connects it to one of best economic tools for analyzing the economy.

Abstract
School lunches are commonly to blame for the rising obesity rates in youth, which pushed law makers to enforce stricter regulations on what schools were able to offer their students. However, with these regulations in place many schools saw a drop in their rate of lunch participation. This led to the creation of The Smarter Lunchrooms Movement, which aims to making the healthy choice the easy choice, without taking the options away. The initial movement began in 2009 where examination of how principles of behavioral economics, the study of how the social and …
