Women, Stem, And Gender Differences In Higher Education Attainment, Amber Gauthier Apr 2020

Women, Stem, And Gender Differences In Higher Education Attainment, Amber Gauthier

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Discussions and investigations of gender differences in earnings and human capital have seen a resurgence recently, specifically as they relate to women in Science, Technology, Math, and Engineering (STEM). Previous research, including my own, has uncovered inequality in earnings. Here, using data from the U.S. Current Population Survey, I examine the relationship between gender and (i) earning a professional certification; and (ii) pursuing graduate education: both means of career advancement and economic mobility. Simple ordinary least squares indicates women are less likely than men to obtain a professional certification, though this effect disappears in the presence …

Respondent Learning And Fatigue In Stated Choice Experiments, Derek Lindgren, Criag Broadbent, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Stated choice experiments have been shown to be a reliable valuation method for non-marketed goods and services. These experiments are usually conducted in a hypothetical survey form. Previous research has indicated that certain behavioral patterns in elicited respondents are inherent in the survey form and length. This study attempts to investigate if there is evidence of the behavioral patterns of preference learning and fatigue by analyzing data from two spate stated choice studies: 1) extensions to Constitution Trail in Bloomington/Normal, IL, 2) Riparian Forest Restoration in the Middle Rio Grande, NM. In comparing the estimated willingness to pays for each …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Gun Control Laws In The United States, Lauren Seidner, Amit Ghosh, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

In recent years, the social and legal environments surrounding firearms have changed drastically. This study aims to discover if gun control legislation is an effective deterrent mechanism for crime by constructing an index that systematically compares gun laws at the state level and scores them on 30 weighted criteria in six different categories. The index is constructed for 10 high regulation states and 1 0 low regulation states for the years 1 996 to 2005, and using panel data and Ordinary Least Squares regressions, the paper analyzes the relationship between gun control legislation and crime rates, while also accounting for …

Environmental Equity In Illinois: A County-Level Comparison Of Toxic Releases, Ted Richards, Craig Broadbent, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

In 2008, 21,695 industrial facilities reported to the US Environmental Protection Agency's Toxic Release Inventory Program. Collectively, these facilities reported releasing 3.86 billion pounds of toxic chemicals into the local environment. Of these 3.86 billion pounds of toxic chemicals, 78.7 million were released in the state of Illinois. This study addresses the question of whether or not this toxic pollution is distributed equally between individuals of different race in Illinois. The study uses both county-level hazardous air emissions data from the EPA and US Census data from the years 2000 and 2008. The study employs both statistical analysis and ordinary …
