This Act enacted to ascertain and settle private land claims for land in the newly formed State of California, which land had been acquired by means of Spanish-Mexican land grants. The Act established a land commission consisting of three commissioners and an agent appointed by the President of the United States. The act set for procedures for claimants to present their claims.
