Is College Liberating For All Students? The Impact Of Sensory Challenges On Participation Of Students On The Autism Spectrum And With Other Neurodivergent Diagnoses, Sophia Starvaggi, Mary Smith Otr/L, Phd
Spring 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Neurodiversity describes unique ways in which an individual's brain works, impacting skills such as executive function, social interaction, communication, and sensory processing. Sensory processing describes the system which receives, processes, organizes, and responds to sensory information received in several environments throughout the day. Sensory sensitivity involves both over- and under-responsiveness to sensory information received, both causing an impact on one’s participation. An occupational area that seems to lack support for sensory challenges is that of postsecondary, or college, settings.
Several policies exist to protect the right to equal education for students with disabilities, however, these protections only last until students …

Background: Sleep difficulties are more common among children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). There is limited research on sleep strategies used by parents of children with NDDs or resources written by occupational therapists. The study examines current sleep concerns and strategies used by parents of children with NDDs, including those affecting time it takes to fall asleep, duration of sleep, routines, and environmental factors that influence sleep.
Method: Parents and caregivers of children with NDDs (n=22) and with no diagnosis (n=6) participated in a survey and optional interview to assess current concerns and strategies used to address sleep. Data gathered included …

Mapping The Vcu Campus Food Environment, Heather N. King, John C. Jones, Dan J. Albrecht-Mallinger
Graduate Research Posters
Preliminary research from a related VCU faculty team indicated that roughly ⅓ of all VCU students experience some level of food insecurity. Inventions to remedy this dire situation will require a more complete picture of the campus food environment. This project documented aspects of that environment. Our research team surveyed vending machines within Monroe Park buildings and facilities, along with nearby corner stores that were easily accessible to the university. Our team employed two instruments from the nationally recognized Nutritional Environment Measure Survey (NEMS), a toolkit created by Penn State University, to determine the nutritional quality of the campus food …
The Design Of Outdoor Play Environments: A Parental Perspective, Taylor Davis
The Design Of Outdoor Play Environments: A Parental Perspective, Taylor Davis
Honours Bachelor of Early Childhood Leadership (HBECL) Capstone Research Posters
As children spend majority of their time indoors in sedentary activities, their outdoor play experiences become daunting and children reduce their connections to nature. Less time outdoors creates less free play and their outdoor play experiences, as limited as they have become, are crucial for their development. Sometimes considered the experts of their children, parents have become lost in the voices when it is time to make decisions about children’s play at institutions. This article aims to explore the neglected voices of parents when considering children’s outdoor play environments. This study not only adds to the growing research in the …

Conservation Education: Using Birds To Connect Communities To Their Natural Environment, Kathryn A. Olson
Conservation Education: Using Birds To Connect Communities To Their Natural Environment, Kathryn A. Olson
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
The theme of my portfolio is conservation education, using birds as an example of how to connect people of all ages to their natural environment. Birds were chosen as an example because of a personal curiosity for the animal, and because they are an accessible and tangible element of nature for all people, urban and rural. The first component is a Curriculum Development Guide created for the Wings Over Water program of the Montana Natural History Center. It synthesizes scientific research on Ospreys, relates central themes of the literature to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and provides inventive activity ideas …

Stop Factory Farming For The Sake Of Humanity!, Alexander V. Dimauro
Stop Factory Farming For The Sake Of Humanity!, Alexander V. Dimauro
ENV 434 Environmental Justice
Abstract: The world is being destroyed. We do not care about the mistreatment of animals in factory farms because of our consumeristic taste buds, but this gluttony is even more problematic than we think. It is blinding us from an even larger factor at stake. Our factory farming methods are a leading contributor in the causes of global warming. What this means for us is that our consumption has a direct impact on our destruction. We need to think big, and act. The only way to combat this issue is through taking courses of action that will force people to …

The Laws Of Nature: Reflections On The Evolution Of Ecosystem Management Law And Policy, Kalyani Robbins
The Laws Of Nature: Reflections On The Evolution Of Ecosystem Management Law And Policy, Kalyani Robbins
University of Akron Press Publications
This timely collection written by an interdisciplinary array of law professors, who specialize in legal and policy issues surrounding ecosystem management, and scholars and practitioners in areas such as environmental policy and planning, conservation, economics, and biology explore why ecosystems must be valued and managed in their own right. The importance of ecosystems has been underestimated. We cannot simply hope ecosystems will benefit from legislation focused on other environmental and natural resource protections, such as those for wildlife, trees, air and water. An ecosystem, a community of organisms together with their physical environment, viewed as a system of interacting and …

[Introduction To] Sprawl, Justice, And Citizenship : The Civic Costs Of The American Way Of Life, Thad Williamson
[Introduction To] Sprawl, Justice, And Citizenship : The Civic Costs Of The American Way Of Life, Thad Williamson
Bookshelf
Must the strip mall and the eight-lane highway define 21st century American life? That is a central question posed by critics of suburban and exurban living in America. Yet despite the ubiquity of the critique, it never sticks--Americans by the scores of millions have willingly moved into sprawling developments over the past few decades. Americans find many of the more substantial criticisms of sprawl easy to ignore because they often come across as snobbish in tone. Yet as Thad Williamson explains, sprawl does create real, measurable social problems. Williamson's work is unique in two important ways. First, while he highlights …

Faculty Books
This publication is based on a study commissioned by UNICEF in September 1992. The purpose of the study was to provide advice on processes that would ensure wide community participation and promote environmentally and financially sustainable development. The study was undertaken jointly by a senior anthropologist with long experience in development work, particularly human resource development, training and action research, and a young MA graduate student of Public Administration. They were helped by their varied backgrounds and experience: the extensive experience of the senior partner in relation to the selected area, the diligent work of the junior partner reviewing available …
