The Politics Of John Muir, Dorothy M. Freeman Jan 1977

The Politics Of John Muir, Dorothy M. Freeman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A man does not always see himself as others see him. John Muir is venerated by several generations of Americans as a man who left a legacy of State and National Parks, State and National Forests, outdoor beauty and untouched wilderness areas which would never have survived has it not been for this dedicated man.

He did not plan such a course. He did what he found necessary to be done, without thought of personal gain or public honor.

However, during his lifetime there were those who did not view him with such veneration. Countless ranchers, lumberman and politicians must …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is thus the purpose of this study to explore the educational aspirations of a group of high school students whose ethnic background is Chinese with the intention of filling the gap in sociological research that has overlooked the Chinese community. As there are many opposing theories on the subject of aspiration, this case study of Chinese students seeks to clarify some of the theoretical perspectives and their problems. Moreover, any study of a minority group would inevitably expose some of the problems that the group faces. Once the nature of the problems is identified and understood, hopefully, solutions may …

Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill Jan 1968

Mexican-American Children In The Process In Acculturation, Elizabeth Ford Stone O'Neill

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The web of Mexican-American life is complex in its origins, its manifestations, and its degree of identification with or alienation from the dominant culture. A thesis of the length of this one can deal with all this complexity only in a superficial way. However, by a rather narrowly defined examination of a few children certain insights may be gained which could be used as a basis for generalization about other children of similar background, and perhaps even for some tentative generalizations about the problems of the Mexican-American community as a whole.

With this purpose in mind -- to inquire intensively …

Authoritarianism And Proposition 14, Herbert Henry Foster

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In November of 1964, California voters approved by a very substantial margin the legislative measure known as Proposition 14, a hotly contested constitutional amendment which abolished all then-existing Fair Housing Legislation and prohibited local levels of government from acting in such matters in the future. In some instances sight records have been adequate reason for including a species on the list when no specimen existed. Sight records for species which are difficult to identify have been admitted upon careful editing. The author has followed the policy outlined by Griscom …

The City Of Great Peace : An Historical Study Of Stockton's Rural Cemetery, Delmar Martin Mccomb Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

One hundred years may or may not seem a long time. To the geologist, one hundred years is but a moment. To the historian it may represent a convenient yardstick to measure events or empires. To the average individual, one hundred years may seem a short time when history tells us that old world civilization was brought to the shores of California in 1542 by Cabrillo, and the first Franciscan mission was established in 1769. One hundred years is a long time When it includes such a period of phenomenal events as mankind has experienced in the past ten decades. …

A Historical Study Of The Development Of The Bracero Program,With Special Emphasis On The Coachella And Imperial Valleys, Margaret Breed Mackaye

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Why at the present time do we need added sources of labor beyond that available within the country? One faction would cry, "We don't!" Another would say, "We decry the importation of labor, but there simply aren't United States citizens in sufficient numbers to get these jobs done." A third group would probably answer, "Why worry about it? These laborers will come across the border, legally or illegally; we may as well avail ourselves of their services." Perhaps we should let a fourth group speak: "We must see that you do not misuse these people."

The Epic Movement And The California Election Of 1934, Robert Matteson Gordon Jan 1957

The Epic Movement And The California Election Of 1934, Robert Matteson Gordon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Californians, in 1933 and 1934, were psychologically ready to act against prevailing social and economic conditions. Existing economic dislocations could not continue for long without peril. It was not clear whether the revolt would be toward fascism or extreme radicalism. There was at all events a growing popular reaction against those who had political and economic control of the State, and this was especially noticeable in the southern part of the State.

A Survey Of Speech Education In The High Schools Of California, Marian Helen Mellgren Jan 1956

A Survey Of Speech Education In The High Schools Of California, Marian Helen Mellgren

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Perhaps the first justification for the inclusion of speech in today’s curriculum is the very evident predominance of oral communication in our lives. Painter has pointed out that “oral communication is the vehicle for 90 percent of the exchange of ideas.”

A second justification for the belief that speech education is important today lies in the fact that our country is a democracy. Democracy is essentially a government by talk, a government in which problems are not settled by force, but in which problems are talked out of existence or into solution. Long ago Aristotle identified communication with political freedom …

Historical Analysis Of The German American Singing Societies In California, With An Evaluation, Anton Hubert Dorndorf

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Throughout Germany the singing society (usually a Maennerchor), is an important institution in the cultural life of every, hamlet, town, and city. Some of these organizations have persisted until the present day. The function which they performed in enriching the lives of their members, and the contribution which they made to the life of the community seems to the investigator a valid reason for investigation into their background and history.

As far as the investigator …
