21st Century Anthropology Scholarship: A Citation Analysis, Priscilla Seaman, Sue A. Kaczor

A 2017 citation study looked at four scholarly anthropology journals in order to evaluate current research trends. This study examined the following journals: Current Anthropology, the American Anthropologist, the American Ethnologist, and the Journal of Anthropological Research. The results showed an average of 89.9 citations per article, which is a large increase over previous studies. The breakdown by the largest two categories showed 48.1% citations to total books, compared to 41.2% for scholarly journals. Past studies of citation coverage of Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar do not demonstrate a consistent pattern that can be applied to the interdisciplinary mix of resources used in social work research. To determine the utility of these tools to social work researchers, an analysis of citing references to well-known social work journals was conducted. Web of Science had the fewest citing references and almost no variety in source format. Scopus provided higher citation counts, but the pattern of coverage was similar toWeb of Science. The purpose of this study is to identify influential publications in scholarly journals concerning Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and trends in scholarship in that area between 1981 and 1992. Bibliometric analysis, the quantitative content analysis of citations, will be applied to the citations that appear under the subject Frankenstein in this time period on the Modern Language Association International Bibliography (MLAIB) CD-ROM.
