An Assessment Of Service And Resource Needs Of University Students With Disabilities, Pauline J. Hradil

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Two studies focusing on the need for supportive services and resources for persons with disabilities at universities are described. Both studies took place in the Kitchener-Waterloo community. In Study One, students and faculty at the University of Waterloo and community service workers were surveyed. In Study Two, students and staff at Wilfrid Laurier University and high school students and staff at the Waterloo County Board of Education were surveyed. In total, eighty-two participants were surveyed by interview or questionnaire methods. The results from the two studies provided information about needs and concerns specific to individual participants and settings as well …

An Investigation Of The Ability Of Elementary School-Aged Children To Learn Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Concepts, Leslie Maureen Tutty Jan 1991

An Investigation Of The Ability Of Elementary School-Aged Children To Learn Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Concepts, Leslie Maureen Tutty

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The current research was designed to investigate a wide range of variables which could affect the ability of elementary school children to learn and to remember child sexual abuse prevention concepts. The major questions posed for the study were: how much do the children know about child sexual abuse before participating in a prevention program, do children learn the prevention concepts after participating in the program and do they remember the concepts over time (five months). Age was considered a critical variable, so three age groups were delineated: Grades 1, 3 and 6. A smaller sample of kindergarten children were …

Gentrification In Canadian Inner Cities: An Investigation Of Major Factors (Montreal, Quebec, Toronto, Ontario, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Vancouver, British Columbia), M. Anne Sinclair-Puchtinger Jan 1991

Gentrification In Canadian Inner Cities: An Investigation Of Major Factors (Montreal, Quebec, Toronto, Ontario, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Vancouver, British Columbia), M. Anne Sinclair-Puchtinger

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Over the past two decades, the literature regarding gentrification has become extensive. More recently, a smaller body of research has emerged. This research, which takes a more theoretical approach, accepts some of the views of earlier literature, but places an emphasis on explaining the underlying causes of gentrification, rather than describing its instances. The purpose of this thesis has been to consider recent literature on gentrification in terms of whether a relationship exists between contemporary demographic and societal changes and the process of gentrification. This has been accomplished by using three methods. The first method involves the computation of growth …

The First Two Years Of Woolwich Community Health Centre: Program And Project Evaluations, Corrine W. Johnston Jan 1991

The First Two Years Of Woolwich Community Health Centre: Program And Project Evaluations, Corrine W. Johnston

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Community health centres were set up to aid in combatting the accelerating rate of spending in health services, to encourage a shift from the present emphasis on acute hospital in-patient care to other forms of health care, and to more fully reflect the objectives and priorities of illness-prevention and health promotion, and community-based care. Broadly, the purpose of this thesis was to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of a new health centre—Woolwich Community Health Centre. Specifically, the evaluation assessed health promotion and illness prevention programs implemented by the staff of the health centre, client empowerment and client satisfaction with the health …

Consumer Spatial Shopping Behaviour Analysis: A Case Study Of The Kitchener Cma (Ontario), Yalin Wu Jan 1991

Consumer Spatial Shopping Behaviour Analysis: A Case Study Of The Kitchener Cma (Ontario), Yalin Wu

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Many marketing geographers concern themselves with the study of consumer spatial choice behaviour. Addressing some of the concerns, this thesis provides an evidence of customers’ spatial shopping behaviour at the study region of Kitchener Census Metropolitan Area (CMA). A customer’s spatial choice decision-making in the study area was first assumed to be a two-levelled process: regional and subregional level. This study was to identify the factors motivating consumers’ choice on where to shop at these two levels. A previous 804 households’ shopping behaviour survey conducted by Dr. A. Hecht in 1986 was used as the data basis of this study. …

A Case Study Of Black West Indian Migrants In Urban Canada: The Decision To Migrate, Patrick Richardson Jan 1991

A Case Study Of Black West Indian Migrants In Urban Canada: The Decision To Migrate, Patrick Richardson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The main purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which traditional models of the migration decision making process adequately account for and describe the decision making process of black West Indian immigrants in Canada. Traditional models of the migration decision making process have suggested that individuals migrate after a rational comparison of place utilities (Wolpert, 1964; Roseman, 1971). These human capital models of migration (De Jong et al, 1981) suggest that individuals, acting in a very rational manner, seek always to maximize their “profits” at an optimum location. However, this study suggests that in the case of …

Rural-Urban Migration And Squatter Settlement Formation In African Cities: A Case Study Of A Ghanaian Squatter Settlement (Tema), Thomas Y. Owunsu Jan 1991

Rural-Urban Migration And Squatter Settlement Formation In African Cities: A Case Study Of A Ghanaian Squatter Settlement (Tema), Thomas Y. Owunsu

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The massive rural to urban migration in developing countries has been identified as the cause of the existence of squatter settlements in the neighboring urban areas. This thesis puts forward a comprehensive theoretical framework of the process that leads to the formation and growth of such settlements. It is argued that, under intense urbanization, the number of urban migrants far exceeds the capacity of the receiving city to provide sufficient employment and housing opportunities. A certain segment of migrants, especially those with low levels of skills, educational background and support in the city of destination are assimilated in the squatter …

Population Concentration Or Deconcentration In Ontario? An Examination Of Recent Patterns And Probable Causal Factors, Sinisa Aleksa Jan 1991

Population Concentration Or Deconcentration In Ontario? An Examination Of Recent Patterns And Probable Causal Factors, Sinisa Aleksa

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The process of population deconcentration has received little attention from a methodological and causal perspective. In the early 1970’s, most western and industrialized nations including Canada experienced an intense movement of the population away from the larger metropolitan and urban areas. As a result, much of the growth during this time period was taking place at lower levels of the settlement hierarchy. In fact, much of the growth in those areas had in the past been characterized by heavy out-migration and overall population losses. Research in the 1980’s has been of a critical nature. There have been two main criticisms. …

Training In Community Psychology At Wilfrid Laurier University: A Process And Outcome Evaluation (Ontario), Judit Alcade Jan 1991

Training In Community Psychology At Wilfrid Laurier University: A Process And Outcome Evaluation (Ontario), Judit Alcade

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

There is to date no Canadian example of a systematic evaluation of a community psychology training programme, and the literature reveals few evaluations in the U.S. This paper describes an evaluation of the Community Psychology M.A. Programme at Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU). A utilization-focused stakeholder model was used, whereby I worked closely with faculty, students, some support staff, and a graduate of the programme throughout the entirety of the evaluation. Because community psychology is strongly committed to process, both outcome and process goals were given equal emphasis. In addition, other aspects such as student satisfaction, course effectiveness, and an exploration …

The Role Of Conceptual Processing In Perceptual Identification Performance, Michael B. Wasdell Jan 1991

The Role Of Conceptual Processing In Perceptual Identification Performance, Michael B. Wasdell

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The present research examined the extent to which conceptual processing done at study contributed to perceptual identification priming in an associative priming paradigm. Subjects performed either an elaborative (sentence generation) or non-elaborative (vowel comparison) encoding task on unrelated cue-target pairs presented in a study list. On a subsequent perceptual identification test, old target words were paired with their study trial cues (same context), other study trial cues (rearranged context), novel cue words (new context) and non-word cues (no context). A conceptual processing effect would be evidenced by a significantly higher level of the same context priming in the elaborative encoding …

There's No Place Like Home: The Empowering Potential Of The Midwifery Model Of Childbirth, Denise Catherine Squire

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purposes of this study were to: 1) explore and describe the experience of the midwifery model of childbirth from the perspectives of midwives and mothers who had planned a homebirth; 2) determine the extent to which the experience of the midwifery model of childbirth evidences my values which have been influenced by feminist literature and literature on empowerment; and 3) make the information from this research available to midwives, families who have used the services of midwives, and the public in general. Four midwives and ten mothers who had planned a homebirth between January 1, 1990 and February 15, …

Youth Stress, Support, Coping Skills And Depression: Developing A Model For Primary Prevention In The High Schools, M. Jill Somerville Jan 1991

Youth Stress, Support, Coping Skills And Depression: Developing A Model For Primary Prevention In The High Schools, M. Jill Somerville

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study examined the needs and resources of Galt Collegiate Institute and the City of Cambridge in order to develop a primary prevention program for adolescent stress, support, and coping skills. Two hundred and ten high school students (grade 9 to OAC) completed an adolescent experiences questionnaire including measures on daily hassles, social support, coping skills, depression, and affect. As well, ten individuals from the community completed an interview focusing on program ideas and available resources. Multiple regression analyses of the student data revealed that hassles were directly related to negative affect and depression, and coping skills were directly related …

A Cognitive Approach To Discharge Planning For Offenders, Frederick Wayne Morris Jan 1991

A Cognitive Approach To Discharge Planning For Offenders, Frederick Wayne Morris

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The paper describes an application of cognitive psychological techniques to a program of discharge planning for offenders from a medium security Correctional Centre. It contains a review of alternative methods of discharge planning, outlines the development of cognitive treatment techniques, and explains the rationale for applying these techniques to incarcerated offenders. A quasi-experimental approach is utilized, comparing a group that experienced a combination of Interpersonal Cognitive Problem-Solving, an affective component, self-initiation and relapse prevention with no treatment comparison groups. A significant improvement was in the experiment group in their ability to solve problems as measured by the Means End Problem-Solving …

Qualitative Evaluation Of Processes And Outcomes Of A Home Visiting Program For Developmentally Handicapped Preschoolers And Their Families, Nancy Lapointe Jan 1991

Qualitative Evaluation Of Processes And Outcomes Of A Home Visiting Program For Developmentally Handicapped Preschoolers And Their Families, Nancy Lapointe

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A variety of programs reflecting a diverse array of philosophical approaches to early intervention for developmentally handicapped preschoolers have been developed over the past 30 years. Evaluations of these programs report that early intervention is effective for these children. Yet considerable controversy continues about the validity of most of these studies. A number of researchers have expressed the need for different methods of evaluation but to date few researchers have attempted to evaluate these programs with more appropriate methods or to examine aspects of the program other than child outcomes. This study assessed an early intervention program that involved home …

Public Attitudes Toward Street Kids And Their Families, Diane Elizabeth Garvin Jan 1991

Public Attitudes Toward Street Kids And Their Families, Diane Elizabeth Garvin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Public attitudes and perceptions largely determine how and to what extent a society and its communities deal with street kids and their families. It was the purpose of the present study to discover the knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes of the Kitchener-Waterloo public regarding street kids and their families. Directors from five local agencies assisted me throughout the process of this thesis. A telephone survey was conducted with a random sample of 128 residents from all geographic areas of Kitchener-Waterloo, using a structured questionnaire. The age range of this sample was from 16 to 93 years old. Males and females were …

Microgenetic Development In Preschoolers' Private Speech, Robert Muir Duncan Jan 1991

Microgenetic Development In Preschoolers' Private Speech, Robert Muir Duncan

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Vygotsky’s theory of the development of children’s private (or egocentric) speech is discussed, and related empirical research is reviewed. A pilot study demonstrates the visibility of a microgenetic experimental approach to the problem of private speech. The research detailed herein consists of a three-session repeated-measures microgenetic experiment involving 40 five-year-old children, investigating questions which arise both from Vygotsky’s original work on private speech and from contemporary research. Participants in this study were videotaped while working on both paper-folding and story-sequencing tasks. Results showed greater quantities of private speech while participants worked on paper-folding tasks compared with story-sequencing tasks, on difficult …

Differential Outcome Expectancies Of Reinforcement And Nonreinforcement And Memory For Temporal And Nontemporal Stimuli, Mary Jo Ducharme Jan 1991

Differential Outcome Expectancies Of Reinforcement And Nonreinforcement And Memory For Temporal And Nontemporal Stimuli, Mary Jo Ducharme

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The effects of differential outcome expectancies of food and no-food on memory for temporal and non-temporal stimuli were examined. Pigeons matched short (2s) and long (8s) sample durations to red and green comparison stimuli, and vertical and horizontal lines to vertical and horizontal lines. In Experiment 1, the Nondifferential Outcome group (NDO) received food or no-food on a random half of all trials. The Differential Outcome groups (DO) received food for correct responding to one temporal sample and one nontemporal sample, and no-food following the other samples. In the Differential Outcome-Short-Food group (DO-SF), the short sample stimulus was followed by …
