Post-Oppositional Culture Theory: Counter Narratives Of African American Preservice Teachers, Sonya Victoria Scott

This study seeks to counter the social narrative that African Americans resist schooling by examining African American post baccalaureate college students that have developed a passion for learning as demonstrated in their persistence and motivations to enter the teaching profession. Racially correlated disparities prevalent in standardized test scores, high school dropout rates and college eligibility remain one of the most pervasive educational dilemmas facing public schools across the nation. African Americans are identified as significantly under performing when compared to the average performance of white students.

The purpose of this project was to develop a customer service survey to be used by child welfare agencies to improve both ongoing social work practice and training of new social workers. Two organizations in Southern California under contract with Children and Family Services (CFS) to serve former foster youth were contacted to recruit volunteers for the focus groups. The present study evaluated the relationship between domains of family functioning and maternal stress in families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and families of typically developing (TD) children. The ASD group consisted of parents of children with an ASD diagnosis currently receiving services at an on-campus center and the community group consisted of parents of TD children. The purpose of this study is to explore foster parents' perspectives' on factors contributing to multiple placements of young children with a special emphasis on infants ages 0-1 year. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of various organizational arrangements on police officers' belief that they and their work are valued by the department. This study examines four management domains and their impact on officers' feelings of being valued. These four management domains are: inclusiveness in decision-making, supervisor relationships, professionalism. and communicated direction. The data came from a sample of 176 survey respondents who are patrol officers in a Southern Californian municipal police department.

The purpose of this research study was to explore the level of knowledge among Master's of Social Work (MSW) students regarding the effects of parental incarceration on the children and families involved, and the special needs that result from this experience. This study utilized an online survey targeting MSW students at three Southern California Schools of Social Work to assess their overall knowledge of this topic, how this knowledge was attained, and level of competence and confidence that the respondents felt in meeting the psycho-social needs of the population. A total of 70 surveys were completed by the target respondents.

The purpose of this study was to add literature by examining the influences of peers on adolescents' academic and caeer motivation using Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a theoretical foundation. Ninety juniors and seniors with a mean age of 16.48 from a southern California public high-school participated in the study. Participants completed a self-report questionaire which assessed background information, academic motivation, career motivation, and peer support.

The purpose of this research was to examine the perceptions of parents of different cultures on how to cope with stress in relation to caring for a child with Down syndrome. This study targeted parents that attend Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles (DSALA) support groups. DSALA has support groups all over Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The sample of participants consisted of nine Caucasian, eight Latino, and three multiethnic mothers for a total of twenty.

Explores many aspects of the Hesperoyucca whipplei (formerly known as Yucca whipplei), a type of chaparral plant that grows in arid regions of Southern California. Five of the subspecies of H. whipplei are individually described and discussed. Its relationship with its pollinator, Tegeticula maculata, is traced and documented throughout the process of a reproductive season. The project examines the historic uses of H. whipplei by the Native Americans as well as its current uses in the modern world. It includes field study lessons and Hesperoyucca recipes.

Goal Orientation, Ethnicity, And Achievement Of Middle Elementary Students, Carl Phillip Koehnke

Examines goal orientation, ethnicity, gender, and achievement variables of 149 elementary school children (grades 3-5) at a Southern California elementary school. Research was conducted using a 2 x 2 goal orientation matrix that included mastery-approach, mastery-avoid, performance approach, and performance-avoid constructs. California Standards Test (CST) were used to determine achievement. Results supported the hypothesis that there would be no differences based on ethnicity, gender, or grade level. Statistically significant differences were found in the mastery-avoid goal because of class subject. Also, mastery-avoid was found to have a negative correlation to high test scores as measured by CST.
